'Mr. Robot' to debut VR short film on iOS, Oculus, HTC Vive
The USA Network cult hit Mr. Robot has already blazed new trails by taking underground hacker culture mainstream, and now the producers are pushing the tech envelope further by diving into the world of virtual reality. SEE ALSO: Mr. Robot Season 2 premieres on Twitter and Facebook On July 21 at 1:45 p.m. ET, the show will debut an original VR short film that will be available to anyone in the U.S. using the Within app (the company formerly known as Vrse). However, in keeping with the "FSociety" hacker aesthetic from the show, the VR short will only be available during its initial showing, after which the content will be removed from the app. To experience the VR short, users can use iOS, Android, the Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive and look for the Mr. Robot VR Experience on the Within app. It should also be noted that this might be the first live national VR event to be offered on all the most popular VR platforms simultaneously.
The Brain Debate: what are the pros and cons of artificial intelligence? Media The Drum
There are some very good questions being asked about artificial intelligence, and some very good answers on both sides from some very intelligent people. But which do you find more convincing? The Drum presents the case for and against as part of a recently published issue of the magazine, guest edited using AI. PRO: Chris Bishop, director of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, said earlier this year that he believes the hyperbole around the AI risks could jeopardise any future developments that may in fact assist humanity. "Any scenario in which AI is an existential threat to humanity is not just around the corner," he told the Guardian.
First Prisma app music video is short and mind-blowing
I just saw the future of music videos. And it came in the form of an Instagram post transformed by the Prisma app. Posted by musician Junk-E-Cat, the brief video shows the producer tapping out beats on an apartment deck in what looks like a scene from an strikingly rendered animated movie. Of course, in this case, the "rendering" has been done by the Prisma app, which uses a mix of artificial intelligence and neural networks to produce imitations of art styles produced by the human hand. Last week, we reported on an upcoming version of the app that applies its effects to video, but this is the first such example we've seen that includes sound.
Machine Learning in the Enterprise: You Can't Afford to be Wrong
As the final moments of Rutger Hauer's tears in the rain monologue come to a close in Blade Runner, Netflix (or your streaming service of preference) has lined up some recommendations for your next viewing choice. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Matrix, the site's algorithms find you similarly cerebral films that you may enjoyโฆor you may not. The stakes are low in this situation. If you end up watching and disliking The Matrix, chances are you won't cancel your monthly subscription; you will simply be more skeptical of Netflix's algorithmic recommendations in the future and continue on with your day as if nothing happened. In the B2C environment, machine learning is a constant presence in the end user's experience.
Meet Cozmo, the little robot pet you can play games with
With that, Boris Sofman pulled a diminutive white toy out of a soft lunchbox, and began showing it off. After a brief introduction, Sofman set the little robot into its charging cradle, at which point it came to life in the way that all living beings recharge: It slept. I could tell Cozmo was sleeping because of the audio that was emanating from the speaker on his head: the sound of snoring. In between the purrs of his breaths, I heard a few seconds of music on what sounded like clarinet and strings. It was an expectant melody, a signal that Cozmo was ready to greet the day.
Netflix price increase prompts subscriber numbers to plummet
Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display
Op-ed by Gov. Inslee: Why Washington leads states in personal income
Governor Inslee's op-ed for CNBC published July 12, 2016 America's advantage in the knowledge-based economy is our human capital. Well-educated, highly-trained, creative-thinking people are essential to the most innovative companies and successful entrepreneurs in the world today. Skilled people are the currency of economic development for states in the 21st century. Why are nearly 95 percent of all the commercial aircraft in North America built in Washington state? Why is our Puget Sound region the cloud computing capital?
Watch The Boston Dynamics Robot Take A Surreal Hike In The Woods
The maker of cool/creepy robots resembling humans and beasts is at it again. This time, the company took its Atlas robot out for a walk in the woods, complete with an entourage of attendants carrying its cables on foot, and more people driving its power generator in a golf cart. The surreal sight was posted on Reddit yesterday, and was reportedly captured by the Redditor's mother while out on a hike with her dog. Both look pretty stunned at the procession. And who wouldn't be, in this day and age?
Cyclotron is the 'Tron' light cycle you peddle
The dream of riding one of the light cycles from the movie Tron just got a lot closer to becoming a reality. Composed of lightweight carbon fiber, the Cyclotron's most distinctive feature is its spokeless wheels, which, when paired with its blue LED trim, look a lot like the digital motorcycles from the classic sci-fi film. No, there's no official connection to the film franchise, but the similarities between the iconic light cycle and this creation are unmistakable. The bike was recently launched as a Kickstarter project and has already raised over 128,000 of its 56,000 goal, and the campaign still has a few days to go. In place of the wheel's spokes, the bike offers utility slots, which can be used to hold carrying cases inside the back and front wheels. The sleek vehicle is controlled in part by what the company calls an internal, 18-speed "E-Gear Box" with electronic shifting, as well as an encapsulated chainless drive train.
West Point taps artificial intelligence to help cadets negotiate Fox News
"Cogito's behavioral analytics technology will systematically analyze communication patterns within negotiating sessions and provide insight into the cadet's psychological state," Ness, who directs the engineering psychology program at West Point, said in a statement. A company that makes software designed for people who work in call centers might seem like a strange fit for West Point, but Cogito has also partnered with the likes of the Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). He also mentioned the call center software the company makes, called Dialog, which he said "actually helps people be more charming on the phone." "Helping cadets advance their negotiation skills is a wonderful use of Cogito's technology," Feast said in a statement about the West Point deal.
