Telemundo and SAG-AFTRA clash over pay for actors
Telemundo is coming off of a big summer. The network has been steadily closing the ratings gap with Univision, long the Spanish-language heavyweight in broadcast television. But just as Miami-based Telemundo is riding high, it is facing mounting questions from Hollywood's largest union over the treatment of its talent. SAG-AFTRA has been locked in a protracted dispute with the network over its efforts to unionize Spanish-language performers on Telemundo productions, mainly telenovelas. The union has accused the network's corporate owner, NBCUniversal, of embracing a "double standard" when it comes to Spanish-language and English-language performers.
1950s electro
The earliest known recording of music produced by a computer - a machine operated by Alan Turing, no less - has finally been made to sound exactly as it did 65 years ago. The performance is halting and the tone reedy. It starts with a few bars of the national anthem, then a burst of Baa Baa Black Sheep, followed by a truncated rendition of Glenn Miller's swing hit In The Mood. ("The machine's obviously not in the mood," an engineer can be heard remarking when it stops mid-way.) But the rudimentary audio track is a landmark - the first time that music played on a computer is known to have been recorded. It was captured by the BBC in the Autumn of 1951 during a visit to the University of Manchester, where the Ferranti Mark 1 - the world's first commercially available general purpose computer - was based.
Role of Attribution Modelling in the Analysis of Codified Narrative
In this blog, I will be discussing the use of attribution models in relation to codified narrative. For this purpose, I will be referring to the plots of two films: the 1974 horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"; and a 2014 dark comedy called "Tusk." I have my own codification system called BERLIN: this is short for "Behavioural Event Reconstruction Linguistic Interface for Narratives." An attribution model supports the inference of meaning from data. Imagine a student one day going to an introductory statistics class and noticing all of the other students clearing their desks. He asks nervously, "Hey, what's going on? The student closest to him replies, "Yeah, there's an exam." "An exam - you mean right now!
Robo Rocker: How Artificial Intelligence Wrote Beatles-Esque Pop Song
When researchers recently unveiled the first pop song composed by an artificial intelligence (AI) system, some creative types may have been nervous about the idea of robots taking over their jobs. But how exactly was AI used to write a song? A team from the Sony CSL Research Lab used a system called Flow Machines to compose the new record, titled "Daddy's Car." The song sounds like a lost Beatles track from the late 1960s, or perhaps a composition by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Franรงois Pachet, the project's lead researcher, told Live Science that the song wasn't created by an AI entirely from scratch, so composers can breathe easy -- at least for now.
'Westworld' tackles the morality of technology, explains star Jeffrey Wright
HBO has spared no expense in bringing Jonathan Nolan's and Lisa Joy's expanded interpretation of Michael Crichton's cult 1973 film, Westworld, to life. The basic premise remains the same in that Westworld is a futuristic theme park where the rich can live out a Wild West fantasy by interacting with androids. In Hollywood terms, it's Jurassic Park (another Crichton creation) meets Deadwood (a classic and traditional HBO Western series). Westworld is the brainchild of Dr. Robert Ford (played by Anthony Hopkins), the creative director, chief programmer, and founder of the high-tech destination. Helping to bring this next-generation alternate reality world to life is Bernard Lowe (played by actor Jeffrey Wright of HBO's Boardwalk Empire and The Hunger Games).
With 'Miss Peregrine,' Tim Burton is just the latest director to shirk a responsibility to diversity
Apparently, director Tim Burton would be fine if you retitled his movie "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children but Only if They're White." In an interview with the website Bustle, Burton was asked why, given the pervasive, ongoing discussion of diversity in Hollywood, the overwhelming majority of the characters (and, hence, actors) in his latest fantasy film are white. "Nowadays, people are talking about it more," Burton said. He went on to talk about how, as a kid, he would've been dismayed to see an Asian kid or a black kid on "The Brady Bunch," or more white actors in blaxploitation movies. Burton's statements are just the latest from a celebrated, veteran filmmaker unable to wrap his mind around why diversity matters.
Joey Bada Drops Some Artificial Intelligence
Joey: I come to this restaurant called Greenspan Grilled Cheese, and oh my god, the sandwiches here are so fly, you wouldn't even believe it. If there was going to be a Joey Bada grilled cheese, what would be on it? Joey: It would be tuna, toasted bread, of course some nice cheese, tomato sauce and grapes, because that's how they make theirs. Joey: I'm going to be back in Brooklyn as soon as my tour is over. No Brooklyn shows coming up, but I'm sure we'll book one very soon.
Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie strike a temporary child-custody deal
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have come to a temporary, three-week agreement on custody of their six children, a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday. The deal was voluntary and doesn't reflect any ruling from the court regarding permanent custody, legal or physical, the source said. Both Pitt and Jolie agreed to get individual counseling, the source said, and Pitt offered to submit to drug and alcohol testing, which was not required. The couple agreed that Pitt's first visit with the kids would include a therapist, but there was no requirement for a monitor during subsequent visits. Decision-making for Maddox, 15; Pax, 12; Zahara, 11; Shiloh, 10; and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne will follow a structured plan agreed to by both parents.
Real User #Monitoring @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps #ContinuousDelivery
With online viewership and sales growing rapidly, enterprises are interested in understanding how they analyze performance to positively impact business metrics. Deeper insight into the user experience is needed to understand why conversions are dropping and/or bounce rates are increasing or, preferably, to understand what has been helping these metrics improve. The digital performance management industry has evolved as application performance management companies have broadened their scope beyond synthetic testing that simulates users loading specific pages at regular intervals to include web and mobile testing, and real user monitoring (RUM). As synthetic monitoring gained popularity, performance engineers realized the variations that exist from real end users were not being captured. This led to the introduction of RUM - the process of capturing, analyzing and reporting data from a real end user's interaction with a website.
