Coming to the Multiplex: Movies Written by Machines
If you're looking for a good movie, I suggest that you try "It's No Game." If you've never heard of it, that's okay. The film, just released this week, is a bit less than eight minutes long. It tells the story of a pair of Hollywood writers who learn that they are going to be replaced by an artificially intelligent algorithm that generates screenplays. By now I'm sure you've guessed the kicker: "It's No Game" was itself written by an artificially intelligent algorithm that generates screenplays.
Walt Disney World plans to deploy driverless shuttles at Florida theme parks
Walt Disney World in Florida appears poised to launch the highest-profile commercial deployment of driverless passenger vehicles to date, testing a fleet of driverless shuttles that could cart passengers through parking lots and around its theme parks. According to sources with direct knowledge of Disney's plans, the company is in late-stage negotiation with at least two manufacturers of autonomous shuttles – Local Motors, based in Phoenix, and Navya, based in Paris. It's unclear whether contracts would go to both or just one of the companies. The sources, who asked not be identified to avoid offending Disney, said the company plans a pilot program later this year to transport employees in the electric-drive robot vehicles. If that goes well, they said, the shuttles would begin transporting park visitors sometime next year.
Xbox chief says gaming industry needs an on-demand service
It has revolutionised the way we watch TV shows and movies. But could a Netflix-style service have the same impact on the world of video gaming? One expert believes so and has argued that it could be vital to the future diversity of the industry. Traditionally vast amounts of money was spent on headline grabbing franchise games, as well as some smaller standalone titles, which would then be recuperated through sales. The focus was on engaging single-player story lines, akin to movies, with classics like Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider.
The Artificial Intelligence Race Is On to Help Take Down Violent Videos
Companies from Singapore to Finland are racing to improve artificial intelligence so software can automatically spot and block videos of grisly murders and mayhem before they go viral on social media. None, so far, claim to have cracked the problem completely. A Thai man who broadcast himself killing his 11-month-old daughter in a live video on Facebook this week, was the latest in a string of violent crimes shown live on the social media company. The incidents have prompted questions about how Facebook's reporting system works and how violent content can be flagged faster. A dozen or more companies are wrestling with the problem, those in the industry say.
Deep Learning Meets Recommendation Systems
Almost everyone loves to spend their leisure time to watch movies with their family and friends. We all have the same experience when we sit on our couch to choose a movie that we are going to watch and spend the next two hours but can't even find one after 20 minutes. We definitely need a computer agent to provide movie recommendation to us when we need to choose a movie and save our time. Apparently, a movie recommendation agent has already become an essential part of our life.. According to Data Science Central "Although hard data is difficult to come by, many informed sources estimate that, for the major ecommerce platforms like Amazon and Netflix, that recommenders may be responsible for as much as 10% to 25% of incremental revenue."

Facebook says governments are using the social network to spread hoaxes
Facebook is set to admit it has become a battleground for governments intent on manipulating public opinion in other countries for geopolitical reasons, according to a new report. The social network will outline plans to combat what it calls coordinated "information operations" funded by nations, in a report that will be published this evening, according to Reuters. The information operations go beyond fake news, with paid professionals and government employees using false accounts to maximise the circulation of hoax, inflammatory and racist stories. An AI wrote all of David Hasselhoff's lines in this bizarre short film
Last year, director Oscar Sharp and AI researcher Ross Goodwin released the stunningly weird short film Sunspring. It was a sci-fi tale written entirely by an algorithm that eventually named itself Benjamin. Now the two humans have teamed up with Benjamin again to create a follow-up movie, It's No Game, about what happens when AI gets mixed up in an impending Hollywood writers' strike. Ars is excited to debut the movie here, so go ahead and watch. We also talked to the film cast and creators about what it's like to work with an AI.
Net neutrality under threat as FCC opens doors to internet barriers
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US has announced the first move in its efforts to kill off net neutrality. Ajit Pai, who was appointed chairman of the FCC by President Trump, wants to remove many of the regulations designed to keep broadband providers in check, protect consumers and encourage companies to innovate. He's announced plans to reverse the Title II classification of internet service providers (ISPs) as a "common carrier", measures introduced by the FCC in 2015.
