[P] Efficient graph embedding (DeepWalk) in C • r/MachineLearning
After a recent post about implementation difficulties decided to share my take on DeepWalk. It is 4-5 times faster than original version, but requires a decently modern processor with FMA2 instructions. There are some others implementations available, but none of them is able to reproduce the quality of the original paper AFAIK. I also include a simple (and inefficient) python converter to the programs' input data format. Hope that stuff helps someone.
Get an Echo Dot alternative—and 3 months of Amazon Music—for $30 right now
If you make a purchase by clicking one of our links, we may earn a small share of the revenue. However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA TODAY's newsroom and any business incentives. Until recently, the most affordable home assistant worth buying was Amazon's Echo Dot smart speaker. But Anker, the makers of the best-selling Eufy RoboVac 11, recently released a comparable device called the Eufy Genie that comes with a much lower price tag. This little device typically sells for $35, a full $15 less than the Dot, but right now it's on sale for $29.70 (15% off).
3 Huge Series Netflix Turned Down
Not all original shows can land that coveted spot on Netflix, but there are some shows that probably should have. Netflix is known for its very successful original series, like "Stranger Things," "Daredevil," "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" – but that doesn't mean the streaming service hasn't missed out on a few major shows. Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, recently revealed that Netflix has passed on some shows that wound up being huge hits for competitors. "There have been many of them," Sarandos told Variety in a recent interview. While he didn't share all of the series they ended up passing on, he did share three of the big titles that came to mind. Netflix passed on "Transparent" and it ultimately went to Amazon Studios.
Sonos FCC filing confirms a voice-powered speaker
At this point, it's probably easier to list off who isn't making a voice-controlled smart speaker (that we know of). Thanks to an FCC filing, it looks like Sonos is getting close to jumping into the fray. "Product model S13 is a high-performance all-in-one wireless smart speaker and part of Sonos' home sound system," the document reads. "S13 adds integrated voice control functionality with far field microphones. Moreover, the device will support multiple voice platforms and music services, allowing customers to effortlessly control their music on Sonos."
Why the Robots Won't Watch Our Movies – Inside Machine learning – Medium
As machine learning, and especially deep learning, achieve greater cognitive feats -- winning at Jeopardy and Go, recognizing images and spoken language, and soon enough driving without drivers -- we're reaching for the next challenges, including teaching AIs how to understand our human needs and respond accordingly. The exploration is already underway on many fronts, and it won't be long before machine learning algorithms know enough to order pizza for your family -- or send an apologetic email to your spouse -- without you having to ask. In general, the data for these sympathetic systems will come from an array of sensors and from the content of our written and spoken communication. Taken together, that information could compel a well-trained machine learning algorithm to phone in an order for a couple of pizzas (with healthy toppings) -- before you lose your mind. The initial complexity comes from aggregating the data and assigning relative weights -- which the AI can refine as it trains on data from thousands of other households like yours.
Why AI is set to be a game-changer for creativity
From movie makers to fashion designers, the future of compelling and engaging creative content will be powered by great artificial intelligence. That's according to IBM fellow and manager of multimedia and vision, Dr John Smith, who caught up with this week with CMO to discuss how the vendor is working to build out applications of AI in the creative sphere. "Truly creative people – the artists, the designers – it seems to be all about magic. But there is a method and process behind it," he said. "And there can also be a lot of mundane work."
The road to practical AI (Why I've joined All Turtles!)
I'm thrilled to share that I've joined All Turtles! We partner with entrepreneurs to build products that use AI to solve everyday problems. Led by CEO Phil Libin and co-founders Jessica Collier and Jon Cifuentes, All Turtles is an AI startup studio pioneering a new model for entrepreneurship. As Phil has written, the traditional Silicon Valley methods for innovation and company formation are ill-suited to the development of practical AI. AI provides fundamentally more simple, more powerful, and more personal ways for people to interact with technology.
Unearthing the legacy of Harvard's female 'computers'
In a cramped Harvard University sub-basement, a team of women is working to document the rich history of women astronomers. More than 40 years before women gained the right to vote, female "computers" at Harvard College Observatory were making major astronomical discoveries. Between 1885 and 1927, the observatory employed about 80 women who studied glass plate photographs of the stars. They found galaxies and nebulas and created methods to measure distance in space. They were famous - newspapers wrote about them, they published scientific papers under their own names.
Demand for Mayweather-McGregor fight crashed pay-per-view servers
Did you pay for an expensive pay-per-view or streaming pass to watch the hyped-up boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, only to boil with rage as your access went down? Numerous reports have revealed that servers across the US crashed or buckled under demand for the fight, creating outages serious enough that organizers delayed the fight to make sure people could tune in. Mayweather himself said that pay-per-view servers in California and Florida crashed, while Showtime and UFC failed to load, ran into login trouble and otherwise couldn't keep up with interest. The pay-per-view issues at a minimum are known to have affected TV providers like Comcast, Atlantic Broadband and Frontier, although it's not clear how large the scope of the failures was at this stage. Problems like this aren't completely unprecedented -- Mayweather's fight against Manny Pacquiao created hiccups of its own.
'Hitman's Bodyguard' keeps top spot as Hollywood limps through one of the weakest weekends in years
Lionsgate's R-rated buddy romp "The Hitman's Bodyguard," as predicted, topped the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row as Hollywood's newest releases slumped into theaters, all three opening short of $6 million. Starring Samuel L. Jackson as an imprisoned assassin who needs the help of bodyguard Ryan Reynolds, "Hitman" (which cost $30 million to make) earned $10 million this week in the U.S. and Canada for a cumulative total of $39.6 million. The action comedy, which received mixed reviews -- earning a B rating on CinemaScore but a stale 39% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes -- made $21.6 million in its opening weekend and has dropped 53% since last week. Maintaining the No. 2 spot (despite a 53% drop since last weekend) was Warner Bros' horror prequel "Anabelle: Creation." The film brought in $7.6 million in its third week for a cumulative total of $77.9 million domestically.
