Open Source Stories film selected for two film festivals
We are proud to announce that our film, "Road to A.I.," has been selected as an official entry in The Block Film & Art Festival and the 2017 Alexandria Film Festival. The "Road to A.I." documentary film asks some of the most crucial questions facing the transportation and technology industries as we shift to a more autonomous future. How is artificial intelligence being programmed to make decisions we can live with? Can sharing data make self-driving cars safer? Once seen as purely science fiction, self-driving cars are becoming more than a vision for the future; they are becoming a reality.
AI, Deep Learning Enhances Analytics For TV
The convergence of broadcast television and internet-delivered content services has become a reality -- one that soon will be cemented by the media industry's embrace of ATSC 3.0. In this cross-media environment, broadcast stations face many challenges, a mix of old and new. While ratings are a long-familiar concern for broadcasters, fierce competition for audience share today comes from a variety of providers on platforms ranging from linear channels to over-the-top (OTT) services to social and digital media. The new complexity of content distribution and consumption makes it hard for executives at a station to understand that station's place -- and the value of its media inventory -- within the larger marketplace. Even more difficult is to be proactive in ensuring that the station leverages that inventory to its best advantage.
Amazon Fire TV (2017) review: This is a step backward, even with 4K HDR
Amazon started streaming 4K HDR video way back in 2015, and now it has a streaming device to match in the new Fire TV. Assuming you have a 4K HDR television, the 2017 Fire TV streams crisper, more color-rich video for the same $70 price as Roku's Streaming Stick and Google's Chromecast Ultra. It's also a bit faster than the 1080p Fire TV Stick, which remains available for $40. Despite the step forward on video quality, the new Fire TV suffers from some confounding design choices that make basic navigation a hassle. It also requires you to keep a separate remote on hand for TV volume and power, even as those controls become table stakes on other streaming players.
Frankie Muniz loses his wallet, then his moves on 'DWTS': 'I messed up'
Frankie Muniz (left) with his "Dancing with the Stars" partner Witney Carson. Former "Malcolm in the Middle" star Frankie Muniz has been a "Dancing with the Stars" favorite all season, and fans rallied to his side after he revealed his long-term memory loss, as Fox News previously reported. But the actor had big problems this week as he lost his wallet -- then his dance moves. On Saturday night, Muniz wrote on Twitter, "I lost my wallet today. Replacing the contents makes me want to cry." Did the incident affect Muniz's dancing with partner Witney Carson on Monday night?
TiVo's Bolt Vox DVR jumps into the future with voice control
Stop us if you've heard this one before: TiVo is updating its Bolt DVR lineup with a new remote, a new UI and a new name. The TiVo Bolt Vox (and TiVo Mini Vox) are easy to spot thanks to the remote's new bright blue button that is the key to the extra characters in their name. Following a trail blazed by many other media setups lately (Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Roku -- just to name a few) voice control is a central feature of the new hardware. TiVo has had universal search across platforms including broadcast television, cable TV and streaming for quite a while, but it's not just adding a microphone. Ok, so maybe it's not that much of a secret, but this does represent most noticeable revamp of TiVo's UI since the first boxes appeared, with a renewed focus on predictions and personalization.
Thomson Reuters big data Knowledge Graph delivers social network for finance
Financial news giant Thomson Reuters has released its Knowledge Graph Feed, a way of instantly visualising the connections between lots of data sources, which it describes as "the first financial social network". The Knowledge Graph system is an open source, standardised data modelling system composed of Permanent Identifiers (PermID) which connect some two billion relationships. Geoffrey Horrell, director, Product Incubation Financial and Risk, Thomson Reuters, explained: "What we are delivering is like a social network but it's the first financial social network. So you can ask, what are the strategic relationships around the companies and people that you do business with; who are all the officers and directors, who are their suppliers, competitors, associates, affiliates. "People have talked about graphs but none of the content providers have really published all their data and all their taxonomies and definitions in this graph format before.
How Netflix keeps 'Stranger Things' lo-fi in a high-tech world
Netflix is still surprised that Stranger Things, a science-fiction series starring five young kids, became a worldwide sensation immediately after it was released. Unlike some of its biggest hits, like House of Cards (which is based on a British series), Stranger Things was an unknown property when it premiered in July of 2016. But it quickly captivated audiences, thanks to its '80s nostalgia and the perfectly executed homages to Hollywood classics from the likes of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg. As the series created by the Duffer Brothers enters its second season on October 27th, we talked to Director of Photography Tim Ives about what it's like to shoot it. Ives, who has previously worked on shows like Girls, Mr. Robot and House of Cards, said one of the most important elements was to keep Stranger Things 2 feeling retro.

Microsoft Joins the Home-Speaker Party With Invoke
Similar to Amazon's original Echo, the Invoke is a Pringles can-size speaker that can play music, check traffic and answer questions about sports scores or historical facts. Microsoft and Harman Kardon announced plans in May to launch the Invoke, priced at $199. In August, Harman Kardon said it also would launch the Allure, a voice-enabled speaker using Amazon's Alexa. Though Microsoft's arrival to the market comes years after Amazon's, the company is betting the Invoke can draw customers in with its connections to Microsoft products that have millions of users, such as the Office productivity franchise and Skype internet-calling. Cortana, like Amazon's Alexa, will take commands from users.
