'Black Panther' breaks record, surpasses 'Titanic' as No. 3 all-time U.S. film

FOX News

This image released by Disney shows Michael B. Jordan, left, and Chadwick Boseman in a scene from Marvel Studios' "Black Panther." Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" continues to make history. The Marvel blockbuster broke yet another record on Saturday, surpassing James Cameron's 1997 epic film "Titanic" as the third highest grossing film of all time in the U.S. box office. Almost two months after debuting in theaters, "Black Panther" has officially sunk the $695 million box office record set by "Titanic," according to Friday's box office numbers. In March, the film reached another big milestone after surpassing the $1 billion mark in the global box office.

What Siri can learn from Google Assistant

Engadget

It's no secret that when it comes to voice assistants, Siri is often cited as one of the worst. Even though Apple introduced it years before Amazon and Google, their digital rivals -- Alexa and Google Assistant -- have since bested Siri in both features and performance. That's mostly because Amazon and Google have spent years pouring millions of dollars worth of research into artificial intelligence, making their assistants smarter and more capable over time. Apple is trying to catch up. Not only is it beefing up its phones with "neural engine" chips to power AI efforts like augmented reality and machine learning, it's also building out its Siri team.

NAB Show Conference Showcases Machine Learning and AI for Filmmaking

#artificialintelligence

LAS VEGAS--"Get Ready for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence" is a new half-day program that will be part of The Next-Generation Media Technologies Conference at this year's NAB Show. Taking place Tuesday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, the program will present six panels examining the impact of machine and artificial intelligence on production, post, filmmaking, and digital content creation. "We're looking forward to hosting some of the industries' leading creatives and technologists as they reveal how neural networks and other advancements are enabling production techniques previously thought impossible," said Chris Brown, NAB executive vice president, Conventions and Business Operations. The six sessions--taking place in North Meeting Room N257 at the Las Vegas Convention Center--will explore whether machine intelligence can increase productivity, efficiencies and creativity in production planning, animation, visual effects, post-production and localization. Panelists will also delve into the capabilities of today's neural network-based tools, and their potential to alter jobs, workflows and the nature of content itself.

[P] A reinforcement learning environment for the protein folding problem (2-D HP Lattice Model) โ€ข r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

This project is cool, but it's an extreme oversimplification of protein folding. And that's fine for what it is. Folding@home attempts to simulate real biomolecular systems in atomic detail, using 3D physics-based molecular models (usually based on approximations to quantum mechanics) and Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling to search geometric/folding configurations with a simulated set of thermodynamic conditions. One could think of Folding@home simulations as a reinforcement learning problem where the reward function is the minimization of Gibbs free energy with respect to the protein's geometry/folding.

Spotify might be working on an in-car music player

Engadget

Rumors have been circulating that Spotify is working on some sort of hardware, possibly an in-car controller or a standalone player. As The Verge reports, a number of Reddit users have claimed to have received offers for the device, with plan price points ranging from $12.99 to $14.99 per month, but when they clicked the offer that appeared in the Spotify app, they were directed to an error page. Some have also reported that their offers noted that the device had 4G built in. The player has also been brought up in Spotify support forums, with administrators saying it was a test or that they didn't have any news on such a product. According to screenshots of the offers, it appears that the device would also support voice control.

Elon Musk, Jonathan Nolan Warn of Artificial Intelligence in New Film

#artificialintelligence

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, delivers a warning about artificial intelligence in the new documentary Do You Trust This Computer?, directed by Chris Paine (Who Killed the Electric Car?). Musk himself appears in the film, where he observes, "AI doesn't have to be evil to destroy humanity. But if AI has a goal, and humanity just happens to be in the way, if will destroy us as a mater of course without even thinking about it." Musk also was among those, like Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan, who attended the film's premiere Thursday at the Regency Theater in Westwood. Before the film, which explores both the promise and the dangers of AI, Musk said, "It's a very important subject that will affect our lives in ways we can't even imagine -- some scary, some good."

Pond5 Launches New Artificial Intelligence Visual Search for Videos cinema5D

#artificialintelligence

Pond5, a content marketplace for high-quality royalty-free video, has developed a new AI (Artificial Intelligence) search engine that allows users to search by images instead of words. The artificial intelligence that drives Pond5 Visual Search gives customers the ability to show, rather than tell, what they're looking for. Eliminating the difficult task of trying to put a visual concept into words, Visual Search delivers instant results for licensable media with a similar look to any file a customer chooses. This technology recognizes patterns in shape, color and composition, and compares them to the tons of images and clips that already exist on the Pond5 platform in order to find similar results. According to the company the technology is a patent-pending AI-based Visual Search engine which gives users the ability to discover media based on existing imagery.
