15 amazing Google tricks you never knew before now

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

At Las Vegas gadget show CES, Google is showcasing new features of its voice-enabled digital assistant including a language translator. We use this phrase every day. Once upon a time, the word "Google" just indicated a very long number. That extends to physical products as well. But the world's most powerful search engine can do more than find things.

Netflix price increase for monthly subscription to hit 58 million users across US

The Independent - Tech

Netflix is raising its subscription prices for all 58 million of its US users, marking the first increase since 2017. It marks the biggest price increase for monthly subscriptions since launching its streaming service in 2007, and the first since 2017. All new Netflix subscribers will be subject to the increased prices, while existing subscribers will see their subscriptions go up over the next three months. Netflix has made a major effort in recent years to produce original content in order to keep subscribers loyal to its platform and not switch to rivals like Amazon Prime. A cartoon about a talking horse, starring the goofy older brother from Arrested Developmentโ€ฆ on paper little about BoJack Horseman screams "must watch". Yet the series almost immediately transcended its format to deliver a moving and very funny rumination on depression and middle-age malaise. Will Arnett plays BoJack โ€“ one time star of Nineties hit sitcom Horsin' Around โ€“ as a lost soul whose turbo-charged narcissism prevents him getting his life together. Almost as good are a support cast including Alison Brie (Glow, Mad Men), Aaron Paul, of Breaking Bad, and Amy Sedaris as a pampered Persian cat who is also BoJack's agent.

r/MachineLearning - [D] Best practices for running deep learning experiments on the cloud

#artificialintelligence

I'm working on a machine translation research project, and appealing to the wisdom of the masses here to hopefully improve my workflow. I'm looking for recommendations on workflow optimization and cloud provider tools (I want to avoid buying a GPU specifically for this task) for my project. I know which deep learning framework to use (and what other python libraries, so not looking for recommendations in that area). The data is large-ish -- too large for Git but not large enough for Hadoop. I'm anticipating many experiment variations, where hyper parameters as well as pre-processing of the data may change between experiments.

r/MachineLearning - [D] How to cope with constant rejection from AI/ML jobs

#artificialintelligence

Have gotten rejected by 3 different companies recently. I think I wasn't able to answer one or two questions on a specific subject they asked. So it's almost always a miss by one. Meanwhile they didn't get a chance to really know what I'm capable of. I don't think it's humanly possible to be young and know it all and be able to demonstrate it effectively to a narrow minded interviewer who comes into the interview with a pre selected set of questions, and fails to see anything beyond his set of questions.

Artificial intelligence may stop Netflix account sharing

#artificialintelligence

A new artificial intelligence programme may be set to upset a lot of freeloading Netflix customers and help the video streaming company gains billions of dollars in lost revenue. Currently, Netflix customers can share their password with friends and family, but new software from a United Kingdom start-up Synamedia looks ready to put an end to that by determining where users are logging into their accounts, reports 7News. Introduced at the 2019 Consumers Electronic Show, the AI allows streaming sites to understand the behaviour of users, including seeing if their account is being accessed in different locations away from where the user typically views Netflix content. Up to 35 percent of millennials share passwords for streaming sites according to a study by media research firm Magid. A Parks Associate study found nearly NZD1.8 billion is lost to account sharing each year.

ModiFace AI Helps Customers Find Their Ideal Hair Color NVIDIA Blog

#artificialintelligence

The days of hair coloring being characterized by failed henna experiments and leaps of faith at salons will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to AI. Episode 4 of our "I Am AI" docuseries introduces ModiFace, a Toronto-based company that's transforming the way people choose new hair colors and, along with it, the multi-billion dollar hair care industry. ModiFace has been bringing augmented reality to the beauty industry for the past decade. The company's founder and CEO, Parham Aarabi, had applied his work on using AI for face tracking and lip detection to enable consumers to see what beauty products would look like when applied. Already a leader in that market, ModiFace is now eyeing the much more ambitious task of letting people virtually try on hair colors. The company's iOS application does just that -- with startling effectiveness -- removing a lot of the inherent mystery that comes with deciding on a new hair color.

r/MachineLearning - [D] Getting Started In Original Research, But No Support

#artificialintelligence

So, this post might require a bit of backstory. So, I am a Machine Learning Engineer, working primarily in computer vision for industrial automation with strong interests in RL. I currently work at a government owned R&D organization that works in many areas, from Air Quality to Physical Metallurgy. Currently, I work for the automation lab in the engineering services portion of our organization. I have one deployed system, one more that's finished and going to be deployed in a few months, and beginning work on a third.

Pandora's new voice search feature knows what you want to hear

Engadget

It's been almost two years since Pandora launched its on-demand music streaming service. In that time, the company has done a solid job of fixing some of the issues that cropped up at launch and even adding some features the competition hasn't got to yet (like downloading songs to an Apple Watch for offline playback). Today, Pandora's adding another feature that some of its competitors have: Voice Mode. But, as usual, Pandora believes that the amount of information it has on both the music in its catalog as well as its users will set its voice features apart. For starters, Pandora built Voice Mode internally, from the ground up, something Chief Product Officer Chris Phillips says was key in Voice Mode being a more personal music assistant.

Quartz AI Studio launches an open-source platform to help journalists use machine learning

#artificialintelligence

Imagine you had a personal assistant that you can task with sorting out a pile of messy documents, or ploughing through a mountain of spreadsheets to find what you are looking for. Enter the Quartz AI Studio, a US-based project that helps journalists use machine learning to write better stories. The initiative, launched in November 2018 with the support of Knight Foundation, is spearheaded by John Keefe, Quartz's technical architect for bots and machine learning, who previously led the Quartz Bot Studio. "Many of our bots do include artificial intelligence, and specifically machine-learning, in their operations," he said. "But that's usually to help facilitate conversations -- understanding and interpreting natural language, for example. Or learning when is the best time of day to talk to someone. "But for the machine learning we think can help support reporters, the applications are far more specific.

Amazon Echo Show (2nd gen) review: bigger and better smart display

The Guardian

The new second generation Echo Show is bigger with a better display, but is size enough to keep Amazon ahead of stiff competition from Google? Since the original Echo Show launched last year the software has been refined, but the experience is broadly the same. The Show is a voice-first Alexa speaker, with touch interactivity as an additional input rather than the core experience. If you never wanted to touch the screen beyond the initial set-up,you wouldn't have to. When you do go to touch it, swipes and taps work as you might expect from a modern smartphone. Swipe down from the top to reveal a quick settings shade, including a smart home control panel, a place to trigger Alexa routines and one-tap access to alarms.
