r/MachineLearning - [P] I applied the recent 'Progressive Face Super-Resolution via Attention to Facial Landmark' to create 'photo-realistic' Emojis and Emotes.

#artificialintelligence

Progressive Face Super-Resolution via Attention to Facial Landmark arxiv.org is a machine learning model trained to reconstruct face images from tiny 16 16 pixel input images, scaling them up to 128 128 with nearly photo-realistic results. I tried running emojis, Twitch emotes, and a few game sprites through it. I did have to do quite a fit of cherry picking, and I also iteratively ran the output back into the inputs to encourage the model the add human features. I also created a (very sloppy) Colab Version of the paper's github demo if you want to try this yourself.

Hello, This Is Artificial Intelligence. How Can I Help You? Eye on A.I.

#artificialintelligence

People who call companies to ask questions about their cable bills or complain about their Internet service being out are increasingly talking to artificial intelligence. Natural language processing, a subset of A.I. that helps computers understand speech, has become good enough that it's being used to listen and respond to basic customer questions. Over the past year, Google, Amazon and business software firm Twilio have all ramped up their marketing of A.I.-powered software for call centers. Their sales pitch is that the technology can answer basic customer questions, leaving more complicated questions and complaints to human agents. The tech firms say this A.I. software can also help existing call center staff quickly retrieve relevant customer information when they are chatting with customers, but it should be noted that the technology will likely result in companies eliminating human workers as they look for ways to automate customer service.

Marketing AI: What You Need To Know To Make Your Marketing Better - Heidi Cohen

#artificialintelligence

Can you define Marketing AI? Or, do you think Marketing AI is just another overhyped, technology buzzword? The AI Reality: You already use artificial intelligence everyday without realizing it! Without calling attention to the technology behind the services they deliver, Facebook, Google, Netflix, and Amazon have integrated elements of AI into their offerings. More importantly, did you know: Many organizations already have started to automate repetitive functions using Marketing AI to achieve business goals? BUT: Don't ask HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey or C-3PO and R2-D2 from Star Wars to help you.

BBC to launch Alexa rival that will grasp regional accents

#artificialintelligence

The BBC is preparing to launch a rival to Amazon's Alexa called Beeb, with a pledge that it will understand British accents. The voice assistant, which has been created by an in-house BBC team, will be launched next year, with a focus on enabling people to find their favourite programmes and interact with online services. While some US-developed products have struggled to understand strong regional accents, the BBC will this week ask staff in offices around the UK to record their voices and make sure the software understands them. The BBC currently has no plans to launch a standalone physical product such as Amazon's Echo speaker or a Google Home device. Instead, the Beeb software will be built into the BBC's website, its iPlayer app on smart TVs, and made available to manufacturers who want to incorporate the public broadcaster's software.

'Dangerous' AI offers to write fake news

#artificialintelligence

An artificial intelligence system that generates realistic stories, poems and articles has been updated, with some claiming it is now almost as good as a human writer. The text generator, built by research firm OpenAI, was originally considered "too dangerous" to make public because of the potential for abuse. But now a new, more powerful version of the system - that could be used to create fake news or abusive spam on social media - has been released. The BBC, along with some AI experts, decided to try it out. The model, called GPT-2, was trained on a dataset of eight million web pages, and is able to adapt to the style and content of the initial text given to it.

New Paper Shows How Governments Can Deter The Rise of Hostile, Super-Intelligent AI

#artificialintelligence

The invention of an artificial super-intelligence has been a central theme in science fiction since at least the 19th century. From E.M. Forster's short story The Machine Stops (1909) to the recent HBO television series Westworld, writers have tended to portray this possibility as an unmitigated disaster. But this issue is no longer one of fiction. Prominent contemporary scientists and engineers are now also worried that super-AI could one day surpass human intelligence (an event known as the "singularity") and become humanity's "worst mistake". Current trends suggest we are set to enter an international arms race for such a technology.
