Beyond quantum supremacy: the hunt for useful quantum computers
Just occasionally, Alán Aspuru-Guzik has a movie-star moment, when fans half his age will stop him in the street. "They say, 'Hey, we know who you are'," he laughs. "Then they tell me that they also have a quantum start-up, and would love to talk to me about it." "I don't usually have time to talk, but I'm always happy to give them some tips." That affable approach is not uncommon in the quantum-computing community, says Aspuru-Guzik, who is a computer scientist at the University of Toronto, Canada, and co-founder of quantum-computing company Zapata Computing in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Can Pay TV Providers Beat OTT Providers at Their Own Game? Yes, They Can.
Delivering that kind of responsive experience is not only possible, it's here today. Digital Home Service, powered by Oracle Cloud, taps into the power of machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and predictive analytics to give providers a cloud-based weapon in the war for media and entertainment industry consumer loyalty. It's safe to say that no one likes waiting for the service technician to get new TV service set up. The technology behind Digital Home Service can eliminate this part of the consumer experience entirely. In its place is a self-serve set-top box setup guided by a user-friendly mobile app, intelligent chatbot, and, if needed, live video support.
The AI Eye: Artificial Intelligence Innovation Alive and Well in Costa Rica
Picking up steam in 1997 with Intel opening of a microchip factory and an $800 million USD investment, Costa Rica has since blossomed into a key tech hub in Latin America, according to an article from Nearshore Americas. But leaving the landmark Intel investment aside (the factory is now closed), the country is fostering growth through government spending in the space, high public funds devoted to education and tax-friendly technology parks that attract investors and talent from around the globe. With a population of five million inhabitants and 51,000 square kilometers, the number of companies in the country has reached over 546 IT companies, 3,447 manufacturing (including medical components), and performed 12,281 various commercial activities by 2018. This activity generated over 300,000 jobs, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census. One of the major fields in the current technological revolution is artificial intelligence (AI), of which a high amount of development is occurring in Costa Rica.
Artificial Intelligence
Over the last few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly, with developers regularly reporting new breakthroughs. AI algorithms work ever faster. Certain machine behaviors never cease to amaze me. I'm astounded by their ability to learn from their accomplishments and from their interactions with we humans. Will algorithms commit war crimes?
How 3D technology is capturing the world
London design studio Sample & Hold has been asked to scan all kinds of things: a shoe, a carrot, the heads of every member of the Barcelona FC team. The firm has even worked with a company in Knightsbridge, London, that makes casts of babies' feet and heads. "Occasionally they have a client who wants a head scan of their kid," explains Sample & Hold director Sam Jackson. Those scans have been used for bronze casts of the child's head, and the 3D scan speeds up that process. Sample & Hold doesn't need lasers to do this 3D scanning.
Apple's Deep Fusion photography comes to iPhone 11 in iOS 13.2 beta (updated)
You now have a chance to try Apple's machine learning-based Deep Fusion photography if you're willing to live on the bleeding edge. It's releasing an iOS 13.2 developer beta (public likely to follow soon) that makes Deep Fusion available to iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro owners. The technique uses machine learning to create highly detailed, sharper and more natural-looking photos on the primary and telephoto lenses by combining the results of multiple shots. Deep Fusion takes an underexposed photo for sharpness, and blends that with three neutral pictures and a long high-exposure image on a per-pixel level to achieve a highly customized result. The machine learning system examines the context of the picture to understand where a pixel sits on the frequency spectrum.
