One of only two surviving prototypes of the original Apple Macintosh computer will go up for auction this week โ€“ at an asking price of ยฃ155,000. The prototype, which was made in 1983, features the aborted 5.25-inch'Twiggy' disk drive, and is going under the hammer at Bonhams in New York on Wednesday. The Macintosh began as a personal project of inventor Jef Raskin before the late Apple founder Steve Jobs took it over. The original plan was to use a 5.25-inch drive to greatly expand the capacity of standard floppy discs. But they proved unreliable, so a 3.5 inch drive, which was more robust and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, was chosen instead for mass production.

Amazon Web Services likes to spice things up at its annual AWS re:Invent conference with unexpected hardware announcements, with past surprises such as a semi-truck for transporting data, a machine-learning camera, and a miniature self-driving race car. Now you can add a machine-learning-enabled musical keyboard to the list. Kicking off the event overnight in Las Vegas, the company introduced AWS DeepComposer, a 32-key, two-octave keyboard that the company holds up as an early example of "generative" artificial intelligence. "Generative AI is one of the biggest recent advancements in artificial intelligence technology because of its ability to create something new," Amazon explains on the AWS DeepComposer site. "It opens the door to an entire world of possibilities for human and computer creativity, with practical applications emerging across industries, from turning sketches into images for accelerated product development, to improving computer-aided design of complex objects."

Thanks to these advancements, an NLP researcher might get value out of fewer examples since they can use the transfer learning to get a head start and focus on learning the nuances of the language specifically relevant to the task at hand. Thus, small specialized corpora are both useful and practical to create.
