How Do We Know What's Real in the Era of the Deepfake?

#artificialintelligence

Through an overwhelming smorgasbord of archival footage, viral videos, documentary excerpts, and one immersive work, curators Barbara Miller and Joshua Glick posit that the antidote to misinformation is context. The show guides visitors through substantial evidence with which they can think more critically about what informs their beliefs. The entry room alone contains nine flickering artifacts in a chronology of "deepfakes," while a parallel hallway is lined with contemporary examples. A deepfake is a video in which real footage has been convincingly manipulated, sometimes with insidious ideological aims. John Lennon can advertise a podcast.

Historic UK Proms music festival to include its first video game concert

Engadget

For the first time, the UK's annual Proms classical music festival will feature a concert dedicated to video game compositions. On August 1st, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Robert Ames, will perform a selection of music from Battlefield 2042, Dear Esther, Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus and other influential titles. "Fantastic worlds, epic adventures, complex characters and huge moral choices – the universe of computer gaming is a natural match for orchestral music, and in the 21st-century games have created a huge and passionate global audience for some of the most vivid, ambitious and inventive music currently being written for symphony orchestra," the BBC writes of the upcoming concert. "From 8-Bit to Infinity" will take place at the historic Royal Albert Hall. If you imagine you'll find yourself in London this summer, tickets start at £14.

Welcome to Janelle Monáe's Dreamworld

WIRED

There's an old story about Octavia Butler that I often return to: A young man once asked the visionary science fiction novelist the answer to ending all the suffering in the world. "There isn't one," Butler replied. "So we're doomed?" he asked, confused. Then she delivered the words that would remake my understanding of the future: "There's no single answer that will solve all of our future problems. Instead there are thousands of answers--at least. You can be one of them if you choose to be." Black futurist artists are often regarded as prophets, and expected, unfairly, to foretell the path that will lead us to a brighter tomorrow.

In a critical episode of The Mandalorian, a TV series set in the Star Wars universe, a mysterious Jedi fights his way through a horde of evil robots. As the heroes of the show wait anxiously to learn the identity of their cloaked savior, he lowers his hood, and--spoiler alert-- they meet a young Luke Skywalker. Actually, what we see is an animated, de-aged version of the Jedi. Then Luke speaks, in a voice that sounds very much like the 1980s-era rendition of the character, thanks to the use of an advanced machine learning model developed by the voice technology startup Respeecher. "No one noticed that it was generated by a machine," says Dmytro Bielievtsov, chief technology officer at Respeecher.

Modern Tech Can't Shield Your Secret Identity

Communications of the ACM

Most comic book superheroes have a secret identity, usually to protect their friends and family from retribution. However, today's computer technology would make it impossible for a superhero to maintain their secret identity. Take Spider-Man, who has a habit of diving into an alley to change into costume. However, video cameras are pervasive in New York City, which could easily capture video of him donning his mask. The New York City Police Department operates over 15,000 surveillance cameras,1 but there are thousands more Webcams controlled by residents and commercial entities.

This man married a fictional character. He'd like you to hear him out.

The Japan Times

In almost every way, Akihiko Kondo is an ordinary Japanese man. He's pleasant and easy to talk to. He has friends and a steady job and wears a suit and tie to work. There's just one exception: Kondo is married to a fictional character. His beloved, Hatsune Miku, is a turquoise-haired, computer-synthesized pop singer who has toured with Lady Gaga and starred in video games.

Amazon Echo Show 15 review: bigger Alexa is good, but not yet better

The Guardian

The Echo Show 15 is Amazon's biggest Alexa smart display and is designed to be a command centre or digital noticeboard for all the family. It is considerable larger than the rest of Amazon's Echo Show devices, which were recently given a motorised screen and small desk-ready displays. That illusion is furthered by its wall-mountable form – it is designed to be hung in a central place like the digital equivalent of the pinboards common to kitchens of homes of the 1980s, and can be mounted in landscape or portrait orientation. It can be bought with a stand for £30 more if you would rather not screw 2.2kg of technology into your wall. The 1080p touchscreen is bright and crisp when viewed at arm's reach.

Meet Your New Content Colleague: AI - Robot Writers AI

#artificialintelligence

There's a good chance that the next pro hired on in your marketing department could be AI, according to Brooke Gocklin. Gocklin is a senior manager at Persado, an AI-generated writing service provider. Observes Gocklin: "Machines are not human -- they'll never be able to provide the same value. "But AI is able to work alongside us to generate better results, especially when it comes to repetitive and mundane tasks -- like writing A/B test copy variations and surfacing the results back to leaders fast enough to take action." Persado -- which started as an AI writing firm specializing in auto-generating personalized subject headlines for marketing emails -- stunned many copywriters back in 2019 by inking a five-year deal with Chase. Under the agreement, Chase brought Persado onboard to auto-generate slogans and other ad copy for its credit card and mortgage businesses. For an alternative perspective on the impact of AI-generated writing on jobs, check-out: "The Robots Cometh: How artificial intelligence is automating writing jobs," by Joe Dysart. This 13-minute video offers a detailed, uncritical look at AI-powered copywriter Localio.io. The tool's specialty is localization: It's designed to quickly auto-generate copy for Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn and other digital properties in more than 120 languages. The hyper-local content attracted two million new page views for the news outlet, July-to-December 2021. Bergens Tidende uses AI-generated writing from United Robots to auto-convert company annual reports into short news summaries. Says Jan Stian, project lead, Bergens Tidende: "The business bot imitates the whole spectrum of journalism.
