Open AI: is artificial intelligence the future of creativity?
Is it going to take over the world? All questions a novice like myself is thinking whenever someone far more clued-up on the ever changing advancement of technology turns the conversation onto the dreaded topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Usually I let them dribble on and myself stay silent in the hope that our chat comes to an end, however, you illustrators and writers out there may want to be paying close attention to the recent craze sweeping through twitter boards and reddit threads. Open AI (based in San Francisco) has been growing in popularity recently on account of its new Playground and Dall-E 2 systems. The Playground system is a new predictive language tool in which you input a question or a command and in a matter of seconds an AI responds with cohesive and calculated language.
Balancing Consumer and Business Value of Recommender Systems: A Simulation-based Analysis

Automated recommendations can nowadays be found on many e-commerce platforms, and such recommendations can create substantial value for consumers and providers. Often, however, not all recommendable items have the same profit margin, and providers might thus be tempted to promote items that maximize their profit. In the short run, consumers might accept non-optimal recommendations, but they may lose their trust in the long run. Ultimately, this leads to the problem of designing balanced recommendation strategies, which consider both consumer and provider value and lead to sustained business success. This work proposes a simulation framework based on agent-based modeling designed to help providers explore longitudinal dynamics of different recommendation strategies. In our model, consumer agents receive recommendations from providers, and the perceived quality of the recommendations influences the consumers' trust over time. We design several recommendation strategies which either give more weight on provider profit or on consumer utility. Our simulations show that a hybrid strategy that puts more weight on consumer utility but without ignoring profitability considerations leads to the highest cumulative profit in the long run. This hybrid strategy results in a profit increase of about 20 % compared to pure consumer or profit oriented strategies. We also find that social media can reinforce the observed phenomena. In case when consumers heavily rely on social media, the cumulative profit of the best strategy further increases. To ensure reproducibility and foster future research, we publicly share our flexible simulation framework.
Representation Learning for the Automatic Indexing of Sound Effects Libraries

Labeling and maintaining a commercial sound effects library is a time-consuming task exacerbated by databases that continually grow in size and undergo taxonomy updates. Moreover, sound search and taxonomy creation are complicated by non-uniform metadata, an unrelenting problem even with the introduction of a new industry standard, the Universal Category System. To address these problems and overcome dataset-dependent limitations that inhibit the successful training of deep learning models, we pursue representation learning to train generalized embeddings that can be used for a wide variety of sound effects libraries and are a taxonomy-agnostic representation of sound. We show that a task-specific but dataset-independent representation can successfully address data issues such as class imbalance, inconsistent class labels, and insufficient dataset size, outperforming established representations such as OpenL3. Detailed experimental results show the impact of metric learning approaches and different cross-dataset training methods on representational effectiveness.
EGCR: Explanation Generation for Conversational Recommendation

Growing attention has been paid in Conversational Recommendation System (CRS), which works as a conversation-based and recommendation task-oriented tool to provide items of interest and explore user preference. However, existing work in CRS fails to explicitly show the reasoning logic to users and the whole CRS still remains a black box. Therefore we propose a novel end-to-end framework named Explanation Generation for Conversational Recommendation (EGCR) based on generating explanations for conversational agents to explain why they make the action. EGCR incorporates user reviews to enhance the item representation and increase the informativeness of the whole conversation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first framework for explainable conversational recommendation on real-world datasets. Moreover, we evaluate EGCR on one benchmark conversational recommendation datasets and achieve better performance on both recommendation accuracy and conversation quality than other state-of-the art models. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate that generated explanations are not only having high quality and explainability, but also making CRS more trustworthy. We will make our code available to contribute to the CRS community
Musika! Fast Infinite Waveform Music Generation
Fast and user-controllable music generation could enable novel ways of composing or performing music. However, state-of-the-art music generation systems require large amounts of data and computational resources for training, and are slow at inference. This makes them impractical for real-time interactive use. In this work, we introduce Musika, a music generation system that can be trained on hundreds of hours of music using a single consumer GPU, and that allows for much faster than real-time generation of music of arbitrary length on a consumer CPU. We achieve this by first learning a compact invertible representation of spectrogram magnitudes and phases with adversarial autoencoders, then training a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) on this representation for a particular music domain. A latent coordinate system enables generating arbitrarily long sequences of excerpts in parallel, while a global context vector allows the music to remain stylistically coherent through time. We perform quantitative evaluations to assess the quality of the generated samples and showcase options for user control in piano and techno music generation. We release the source code and pretrained autoencoder weights at github.com/marcoppasini/musika, such that a GAN can be trained on a new music domain with a single GPU in a matter of hours.
"Melatonin": A Case Study on AI-induced Musical Style

Although the use of AI tools in music composition and production is steadily increasing, as witnessed by the newly founded AI song contest, analysis of music produced using these tools is still relatively uncommon as a mean to gain insight in the ways AI tools impact music production. In this paper we present a case study of "Melatonin", a song produced by extensive use of BassNet, an AI tool originally designed to generate bass lines. Through analysis of the artists' work flow and song project, we identify style characteristics of the song in relation to the affordances of the tool, highlighting manifestations of style in terms of both idiom and sound.
Implicit Session Contexts for Next-Item Recommendations

Session-based recommender systems capture the short-term interest of a user within a session. Session contexts (i.e., a user's high-level interests or intents within a session) are not explicitly given in most datasets, and implicitly inferring session context as an aggregation of item-level attributes is crude. In this paper, we propose ISCON, which implicitly contextualizes sessions. ISCON first generates implicit contexts for sessions by creating a session-item graph, learning graph embeddings, and clustering to assign sessions to contexts. ISCON then trains a session context predictor and uses the predicted contexts' embeddings to enhance the next-item prediction accuracy. Experiments on four datasets show that ISCON has superior next-item prediction accuracy than state-of-the-art models. A case study of ISCON on the Reddit dataset confirms that assigned session contexts are unique and meaningful.

I was talking to someone at work recently and mentioned the Palm Pilot. He never heard of it. Some of us remember it being released in 1996 before the smartphone and social media, and in the early days of the internet. It drove the creation of the smartphone, though the people at Intel at the time didn't see how a portable, hand-held device like this could become common. One of the founders and inventors was Jeff Hawkins who also founded Handspring and worked on the Treo that evolved into a very early smartphone with a camera, which this brings us to today's topic, artificial intelligence.

Say there is a computer which passes the Turing Test in Chinese - Chinese-speaking people are fooled into thinking the computer is a fluent speaker. Someone takes all the rules the computer uses when talking with someone and writes them down. Instead of machine instructions, they are human instructions. These instructions tell the human how to react to any Chinese text. Then the computer is swapped with a human who doesn't speak Chinese, but has access to these instructions. All the human does is take the input and follow the rules to give an output.
