When Apple debuted the HomePod in 2018, it was already late to the smart speaker game. Sure, the company has never been worried about tardiness, choosing instead to focus on being the best. The HomePod sounded good, but lacked a lot of the basic functionality and voice assistant smarts the likes of Amazon and Google offered. Apple has spent the last five years improving both HomePod and HomePod mini, adding features like multi-room audio, multi-user support and an intercom tool. In 2021, Apple discontinued the original model in favor of the $99 HomePod mini.


CRMLS Partners with Styldod for Advanced Image Analysis

California Regional Multiple Listing Service (CRMLS) has expanded their partnership with Styldod, the AI-enhanced virtual staging and image editing product solution, to integrate an identification and analysis process for listing photos. The photo analysis software -- an API integrated within CRMLS' product ecosystem REcenterhub -- will automatically detect image elements such as logos, watermarks, branding, contact information, QR codes, NSFW content, human faces, and more. If a potential compliance issue is detected, the AI will route this information to agents and brokers and give them the opportunity to make corrections. In addition, this new integration can offer users intelligence and provide real-time analytics by aggregating readily available data that has previously been left uncharted. "Styldod's technology has proven to be amazing at sophisticated detection," said Art Carter, CEO of CRMLS.


Buzzfeed to use AI to write its articles after firing 180 employees

After dozens of employees were laid off, online publisher BuzzFeed, known for its pop culture articles, quizzes and "listicles", announced that it would start using artificial intelligence (AI) to write its content. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, will be employed for the initiative and will create custom-made quizzes. According to a memo to staff from CEO Jonah Peretti, he intends to increase AI across BuzzFeed's editorial output and business operations as of this year. Peretti relayed his expectations of AI to improve creativity and content, but humans would still have their role in providing "cultural currency" and "inspired prompts". He set a timeline of 15 years for AI to "create, personalize, and animate the content itself".

Buzzfeed, on the other hand, has taken a more careful, measured approach. Its leaders want to use ChatGPT to generate quiz answers, guided by journalists who create the topics and questions.

BuzzFeed's Stock Soars After They Announce They'll Use A.I. Instead Of Writers To Create Content

BuzzFeed's stock soared more than 200% on Thursday after the company revealed that they will be using A.I. instead of writers to create content. CEO Jonah Peretti sent an email--which was reviewed by Wall Street Journal--to the online media company's staff stating that BuzzFeed will become the "premiere platform for A.I.-created content." In addition to Peretti's vow to invest heavily in A.I. to create content, WSJ also reported a multi-million dollar deal between BuzzFeed and Facebook parent company Meta, in which the company would generate content for Facebook and Instagram. Soon after, BuzzFeed shares rose to $2.88, its highest in seven months, before settling for the day at $2.09, still an increase of 120% and a gain of $156 million. While the jump in share prices is good news for the company, the stock is still down 80% since it went public in December 2021.


GANravel: User-Driven Direction Disentanglement in Generative Adversarial Networks

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have many application areas including image editing, domain translation, missing data imputation, and support for creative work. However, GANs are considered 'black boxes'. Specifically, the end-users have little control over how to improve editing directions through disentanglement. Prior work focused on new GAN architectures to disentangle editing directions. Alternatively, we propose GANravel a user-driven direction disentanglement tool that complements the existing GAN architectures and allows users to improve editing directions iteratively. In two user studies with 16 participants each, GANravel users were able to disentangle directions and outperformed the state-of-the-art direction discovery baselines in disentanglement performance. In the second user study, GANravel was used in a creative task of creating dog memes and was able to create high-quality edited images and GIFs.


AI model GPT-3 (dis)informs us better than humans

Artificial intelligence is changing the way we create and evaluate information, and this is happening during an infodemic, which has been having dramatic effects on global health. In this paper we evaluate whether recruited individuals can distinguish disinformation from accurate information, structured in the form of tweets, and determine whether a tweet is organic or synthetic, i.e., whether it has been written by a Twitter user or by the AI model GPT-3. Our results show that GPT-3 is a double-edge sword, which, in comparison with humans, can produce accurate information that is easier to understand, but can also produce more compelling disinformation. We also show that humans cannot distinguish tweets generated by GPT-3 from tweets written by human users. Starting from our results, we reflect on the dangers of AI for disinformation, and on how we can improve information campaigns to benefit global health.


Shutter, the Robot Photographer: Leveraging Behavior Trees for Public, In-the-Wild Human-Robot Interactions

Deploying interactive systems in-the-wild requires adaptability to situations not encountered in lab environments. Our work details our experience about the impact of architecture choice on behavior reusability and reactivity while deploying a public interactive system. In particular, we introduce Shutter, a robot photographer and a platform for public interaction. In designing Shutter's architecture, we focused on adaptability for in-the-wild deployment, while developing a reusable platform to facilitate future research in public human-robot interaction. We find that behavior trees allow reactivity, especially in group settings, and encourage designing reusable behaviors.
