Can ChatGPT Recommend Movies?
I told ChatGPT I enjoyed the 2013 film "Her," whose protagonist develops a relationship with a virtual assistant. It spewed out a list of sci-fi titles like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Ex Machina." "These movies," it typed, "explore the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, touching on themes such as consciousness, identity and the nature of existence." Wei Xu, an interactive computing professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, explained how ChatGPT managed to produce a list of legitimately comparable movies in seconds. The software, she said, is trained to spot patterns within a massive amount of text data--over 500 GBs--it scrapes off the internet.
How Generative AI models such as ChatGPT can be (Mis)Used in SPC Practice, Education, and Research? An Exploratory Study

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT have the potential to revolutionize Statistical Process Control (SPC) practice, learning, and research. However, these tools are in the early stages of development and can be easily misused or misunderstood. In this paper, we give an overview of the development of Generative AI. Specifically, we explore ChatGPT's ability to provide code, explain basic concepts, and create knowledge related to SPC practice, learning, and research. By investigating responses to structured prompts, we highlight the benefits and limitations of the results. Our study indicates that the current version of ChatGPT performs well for structured tasks, such as translating code from one language to another and explaining well-known concepts but struggles with more nuanced tasks, such as explaining less widely known terms and creating code from scratch. We find that using new AI tools may help practitioners, educators, and researchers to be more efficient and productive. However, in their current stages of development, some results are misleading and wrong. Overall, the use of generative AI models in SPC must be properly validated and used in conjunction with other methods to ensure accurate results.
Which country is this picture from? New data and methods for DNN-based country recognition

Recognizing the country where a picture has been taken has many potential applications, such as identification of fake news and prevention of disinformation campaigns. Previous works focused on the estimation of the geo-coordinates where a picture has been taken. Yet, recognizing in which country an image was taken could be more critical, from a semantic and forensic point of view, than estimating its spatial coordinates. In the above framework, this paper provides two contributions. First, we introduce the VIPPGeo dataset, containing 3.8 million geo-tagged images. Secondly, we used the dataset to train a model casting the country recognition problem as a classification problem. The experiments show that our model provides better results than the current state of the art. Notably, we found that asking the network to identify the country provides better results than estimating the geo-coordinates and then tracing them back to the country where the picture was taken.
BIC: Twitter Bot Detection with Text-Graph Interaction and Semantic Consistency

Twitter bots are automatic programs operated by malicious actors to manipulate public opinion and spread misinformation. Research efforts have been made to automatically identify bots based on texts and networks on social media. Existing methods only leverage texts or networks alone, and while few works explored the shallow combination of the two modalities, we hypothesize that the interaction and information exchange between texts and graphs could be crucial for holistically evaluating bot activities on social media. In addition, according to a recent survey (Cresci, 2020), Twitter bots are constantly evolving while advanced bots steal genuine users' tweets and dilute their malicious content to evade detection. This results in greater inconsistency across the timeline of novel Twitter bots, which warrants more attention. In light of these challenges, we propose BIC, a Twitter Bot detection framework with text-graph Interaction and semantic Consistency. Specifically, in addition to separately modeling the two modalities on social media, BIC employs a text-graph interaction module to enable information exchange across modalities in the learning process. In addition, given the stealing behavior of novel Twitter bots, BIC proposes to model semantic consistency in tweets based on attention weights while using it to augment the decision process. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BIC consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on two widely adopted datasets. Further analyses reveal that text-graph interactions and modeling semantic consistency are essential improvements and help combat bot evolution.
Entry Separation using a Mixed Visual and Textual Language Model: Application to 19th century French Trade Directories

When extracting structured data from repetitively organized documents, such as dictionaries, directories, or even newspapers, a key challenge is to correctly segment what constitutes the basic text regions for the target database. Traditionally, such a problem was tackled as part of the layout analysis and was mostly based on visual clues for dividing (top-down) approaches. Some agglomerating (bottom-up) approaches started to consider textual information to link similar contents, but they required a proper over-segmentation of fine-grained units. In this work, we propose a new pragmatic approach whose efficiency is demonstrated on 19th century French Trade Directories. We propose to consider two sub-problems: coarse layout detection (text columns and reading order), which is assumed to be effective and not detailed here, and a fine-grained entry separation stage for which we propose to adapt a state-of-the-art Named Entity Recognition (NER) approach. By injecting special visual tokens, coding, for instance, indentation or breaks, into the token stream of the language model used for NER purpose, we can leverage both textual and visual knowledge simultaneously. KILM: Knowledge Injection into Encoder-Decoder Language Models

Large pre-trained language models (PLMs) have been shown to retain implicit knowledge within their parameters. To enhance this implicit knowledge, we propose Knowledge Injection into Language Models (KILM), a novel approach that injects entity-related knowledge into encoder-decoder PLMs, via a generative knowledge infilling objective through continued pre-training. This is done without architectural modifications to the PLMs or adding additional parameters. Experimental results over a suite of knowledge-intensive tasks spanning numerous datasets show that KILM enables models to retain more knowledge and hallucinate less, while preserving their original performance on general NLU and NLG tasks. KILM also demonstrates improved zero-shot performances on tasks such as entity disambiguation, outperforming state-of-the-art models having 30x more parameters.
A Non-iterative Spatio-temporal Multi-task Assignments based Collision-free Trajectories for Music Playing Robots

In this paper, a non-iterative spatio-temporal multi-task assignment approach is used for playing piano music by a team of robots. This paper considers the piano playing problem, in which an algorithm needs to compute the trajectories for a dynamically sized team of robots who will play the musical notes by traveling through the specific locations associated with musical notes at their respective specific times. A two-step dynamic resource allocation based on a spatio-temporal multi-task assignment problem (DREAM), has been implemented to assign robots for playing the musical tune. The algorithm computes the required number of robots to play the music in the first step. In the second step, optimal assignments are computed for the updated team of robots, which minimizes the total distance traveled by the team. Even for the individual feasible trajectories, the multi-robot execution may fail if robots encounter a collision. As some time will be utilized for this conflict resolution, robots may not be able to reach the desired location on time. This paper analyses and proves that, if robots are operating in a convex region, the solution of the DREAM approach provides collision-free trajectories. The working of the DREAM approach has been illustrated with the help of the high fidelity simulations in Gazebo operated using ROS2. The result clearly shows that the DREAM approach computes the required number of robots and assigns multiple tasks to robots in at most two steps. Cluster-Guided Label Generation in Extreme Multi-Label Classification

For extreme multi-label classification (XMC), existing classification-based models poorly perform for tail labels and often ignore the semantic relations among labels, like treating "Wikipedia" and "Wiki" as independent and separate labels. In this paper, we cast XMC as a generation task (XLGen), where we benefit from pre-trained text-to-text models. However, generating labels from the extremely large label space is challenging without any constraints or guidance. We, therefore, propose to guide label generation using label cluster information to hierarchically generate lower-level labels. We also find that frequency-based label ordering and using decoding ensemble methods are critical factors for the improvements in XLGen. XLGen with cluster guidance significantly outperforms the classification and generation baselines on tail labels, and also generally improves the overall performance in four popular XMC benchmarks. In human evaluation, we also find XLGen generates unseen but plausible labels. Our code is now available at https://github.com/alexa/xlgen-eacl-2023.
Multimodal Propaganda Processing
Propaganda campaigns have long been used to influence public opinion via disseminating biased and/or misleading information. Despite the increasing prevalence of propaganda content on the Internet, few attempts have been made by AI researchers to analyze such content. We introduce the task of multimodal propaganda processing, where the goal is to automatically analyze propaganda content. We believe that this task presents a long-term challenge to AI researchers and that successful processing of propaganda could bring machine understanding one important step closer to human understanding. We discuss the technical challenges associated with this task and outline the steps that need to be taken to address it.
Conveying the Predicted Future to Users: A Case Study of Story Plot Prediction

Creative writing is hard: Novelists struggle with writer's block daily. While automatic story generation has advanced recently, it is treated as a "toy task" for advancing artificial intelligence rather than helping people. In this paper, we create a system that produces a short description that narrates a predicted plot using existing story generation approaches. Our goal is to assist writers in crafting a consistent and compelling story arc. We conducted experiments on Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) to examine the quality of the generated story plots in terms of consistency and storiability. The results show that short descriptions produced by our frame-enhanced GPT-2 (FGPT-2) were rated as the most consistent and storiable among all models; FGPT-2's outputs even beat some random story snippets written by humans. Next, we conducted a preliminary user study using a story continuation task where AMT workers were given access to machine-generated story plots and asked to write a follow-up story. FGPT-2 could positively affect the writing process, though people favor other baselines more. Our study shed some light on the possibilities of future creative writing support systems beyond the scope of completing sentences.
