Pinterest algorithms are making it easy for creeps to make boards featuring underage girls

Engadget

NBC News has discovered that Pinterest's recommendation algorithms are making it easier for pedophiles to create boards full of images of underage girls. After an initial search, Pinterest will start suggesting related searches that can easily be misused. The images themselves sometimes receive sexual comments. NBC notes that it didn't find child sexual abuse material (CSAM) during its investigation. However, the people creating the creepy boards sometimes had collections containing porn despite Pinterest's ban on that content.

Feats to astonish and amaze - by Ethan Mollick

#artificialintelligence

I do a lot of experiments with various AI systems (mostly Bing in the last couple weeks - here is my guide), and I often find myself astonished. I know that Large Language Models like Bing and ChatGPT are basically word prediction engines, but they are capable of startling results that go beyond what I might have expected from that knowledge. Indeed, the most astonishing feats of AI seem to rely on their ability to be creative through "hallucination." This tendency of AI to make up facts is troubling in some cases, but it also allows them to provide unique and original replies by connecting unlikely sources of inspiration and finding surprising linkages. I wanted to compile some examples that came out of my experiments, some of which have been on my Twitter feed, and some of which are new.

Comedian Sarah Silverman warns 'comedy is not evergreen,' cringes at old jokes

FOX News

Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman explained that she'cringes' at some of her past jokes, suggesting that certain forms of humor are no longer as socially acceptable. Comedian Sarah Silverman said during an interview on CBC Radio One's "Q with Tom Power" that she cringes at some jokes from her past, but claimed it's a normal learning process as time goes on. Silverman has made a career out of using shock-value in her comedy, from saying, "I hope the Jews did kill Christ, I'd do it again" in a standup routine, to wearing blackface in a past comedy skit. In a recent interview she noted that many of her past jokes make her uncomfortable, but she thinks that comedians and America in general need to accept societal progress. "Gee, comedy is not evergreen," she said the interview.

Apple's App Store and the Google Play store are both flooded with fake reviews

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store are being flooded with fake reviews that are distorting the popularity of apps, a new investigation has revealed. Up to a quarter of reviews in the health and fitness section of Google's Play Store were suspicious, while for Apple's equivalent 17 per cent appear fake. Such is the scale of the problem that Which? also found that fake reviews are being openly sold by brokers, who pay Google to appear at the top of its search results. These services offer bulk downloads, reviews or upvotes to help push apps up the rankings, making them seem more reputable if they have been downloaded a huge number of times. Apple warned that it will remove apps that haven't been'updated in a significant amount of time', giving developers just 30 days to update them Such is the scale of the problem that Which?

Steven Spielberg and Noam Chomsky say AI is soulless and scary

#artificialintelligence

Director Steven Spielberg and famed linguist Noam Chomsky have both expressed their doubts about artificial intelligence and its place in the world. Both Spielberg and Chomsky separately gave their views on how AI could have serious repercussions on mankind's ability to create and think independently. In an interview with late-night show host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, Spielberg talked about how the use of AI in the art-making process makes him "very nervous." "I love anything that is created not by a computer, but by a human person," Spielberg told Colbert. "It's got me very nervous because you're basically taking something you created and you made -- which is the computer, and giving the computer autonomy over your point of view and your self as a human person," Spielberg added.

Blog: Why addressing AI-driven discrimination is so important

#artificialintelligence

For International Women's Day, Sophia Ignatidou, Group Manager for AI and Data Science, discusses how bias can arise in AI, the importance of addressing AI-driven discrimination and how we can all work towards equity in these systems. Her blog also appears on the International Women's Day website. As a woman who also became an immigrant, the concepts of equity and inclusion have always been close to my heart. My career began as a journalist, working for newspapers across both Greece and the UK. I wanted to have a more meaningful impact on the world and in the hope that a career change would enable this, I decided to study international relations and diplomacy.

Mark Cuban issues dire warning over ChatGPT

#artificialintelligence

Beyond the Screen co-founder Frances Haugen discusses the emergence of ChatGPT and the ethical trap of advanced artificial intelligence on'The Claman Countdown.' Billionaire Mark Cuban is telling people to be careful when using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT and DaVinci, cautioning that there are very few guardrails in place to help determine fact from fiction. Cuban joined "The Problem with Jon Stewart," an Apple TV podcast, warning that technology's next "big battle" won't be over who's running operations at Twitter. "It's who controls the AI models and the information that goes in them," Cuban told Stewart in December. "Once these things start taking on a life of their own, and that's the foundation of a ChatGPT, a DaVinci 3.5 taking on a life of its own, so the machine itself will have an influence, and it'll be difficult for us to define why and how the machine makes the decisions that it makes and who controls the machine."

Enhancing Spotify Playlists using their Audio Features with Classical and Deep Learning Methods

#artificialintelligence

In today's music streaming landscape, platforms like Spotify are becoming increasingly relevant. Part of what makes Spotify such a dominant platform in the space is the recommendation algorithm it uses. Hundreds of millions of users on the platform use the recommendation algorithm to both expand their tastes and get more of what they love. Using data on over a million songs and their features, as well as thousands of playlists, we were able to develop two distinct algorithms to develop our own recommendation engine. The two models we made utilize two very different approaches; one is a classic KNN clustering algorithm, while the other is a deep learning approach leveraging a neural network. In order to provide a cohesive recommendation system, we would need a lot of data -- data consisting of features from millions of songs -- from Spotify, so that we can train our models on these songs to provide accurate recommendations.

AI tools see uptick in adoption by Coca-cola, Instacart and other large brands despite risks - CBS News

Even if you haven't tried artificial intelligence tools that can writing essays and poems or conjure new images on command, chances are the companies that make your household products are already starting to do so. Mattel has put the AI image generator DALL-E to work by having it come up with ideas for new Hot Wheels toy cars. Used vehicle seller CarMax is summarizing thousands of customer reviews with the same "generative" AI technology that powers the popular chatbot, ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Snapchat is bringing a chatbot to its messaging service. And the grocery delivery company Instacart is integrating ChatGPT to answer customers' food questions.
