Efficient and Robust Time-Optimal Trajectory Planning and Control for Agile Quadrotor Flight

Agile quadrotor flight relies on rapidly planning and accurately tracking time-optimal trajectories, a technology critical to their application in the wild. However, the computational burden of computing time-optimal trajectories based on the full quadrotor dynamics (typically on the order of minutes or even hours) can hinder its ability to respond quickly to changing scenarios. Additionally, modeling errors and external disturbances can lead to deviations from the desired trajectory during tracking in real time. This letter proposes a novel approach to computing time-optimal trajectories, by fixing the nodes with waypoint constraints and adopting separate sampling intervals for trajectories between waypoints, which significantly accelerates trajectory planning. Furthermore, the planned paths are tracked via a time-adaptive model predictive control scheme whose allocated tracking time can be adaptively adjusted on-the-fly, therefore enhancing the tracking accuracy and robustness. We evaluate our approach through simulations and experimentally validate its performance in dynamic waypoint scenarios for time-optimal trajectory replanning and trajectory tracking.


The language of sounds unheard: Exploring musical timbre semantics of large language models

Semantic dimensions of sound have been playing a central role in understanding the nature of auditory sensory experience as well as the broader relation between perception, language, and meaning. Accordingly, and given the recent proliferation of large language models (LLMs), here we asked whether such models exhibit an organisation of perceptual semantics similar to those observed in humans. Specifically, we prompted ChatGPT, a chatbot based on a state-of-the-art LLM, to rate musical instrument sounds on a set of 20 semantic scales. We elicited multiple responses in separate chats, analogous to having multiple human raters. ChatGPT generated semantic profiles that only partially correlated with human ratings, yet showed robust agreement along well-known psychophysical dimensions of musical sounds such as brightness (bright-dark) and pitch height (deep-high). Exploratory factor analysis suggested the same dimensionality but different spatial configuration of a latent factor space between the chatbot and human ratings. Unexpectedly, the chatbot showed degrees of internal variability that were comparable in magnitude to that of human ratings. Our work highlights the potential of LLMs to capture salient dimensions of human sensory experience.


Unsupervised Story Discovery from Continuous News Streams via Scalable Thematic Embedding

Unsupervised discovery of stories with correlated news articles in real-time helps people digest massive news streams without expensive human annotations. A common approach of the existing studies for unsupervised online story discovery is to represent news articles with symbolic- or graph-based embedding and incrementally cluster them into stories. Recent large language models are expected to improve the embedding further, but a straightforward adoption of the models by indiscriminately encoding all information in articles is ineffective to deal with text-rich and evolving news streams. In this work, we propose a novel thematic embedding with an off-the-shelf pretrained sentence encoder to dynamically represent articles and stories by considering their shared temporal themes. To realize the idea for unsupervised online story discovery, a scalable framework USTORY is introduced with two main techniques, theme- and time-aware dynamic embedding and novelty-aware adaptive clustering, fueled by lightweight story summaries. A thorough evaluation with real news data sets demonstrates that USTORY achieves higher story discovery performances than baselines while being robust and scalable to various streaming settings.

Tech experts warned that premature regulation of artificial intelligence could give China a leg up, allowing the country to meet its goals of dominating the world in technology. China has released plans to make the country the global leader in AI by 2030, as well as a National Innovation-Driven Development Strategy for use by the country's military. Movie clip reconstructed by an AI reading mice's brains as they watch

A mouse's brain activity may give some indication into what it is seeing A black-and-white movie has been extracted almost perfectly from the brain signals of mice using an artificial intelligence tool. Mackenzie Mathis at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne and her colleagues collected brain activity data from around 50 mice while they watched a 30-second movie clip nine times. The researchers then trained an AI to link this data to 600 frames of the clip, in which a man runs to a car and opens its boot. The data was previously collected by other researchers who inserted metal probes, which record electrical pulses from neurons, into the mice's primary visual cortexes, the area of the brain involved in processing visual information. Some brain activity data was also collected by imaging the mice's brains using a microscope. Next, Mathis and her team tested the ability of their trained AI to predict the order of frames within the clip using brain activity data that was collected from the mice as they watched the movie for the tenth time.

South Carolina priest says there's 'no place' for AI after Asia Catholic Church uses it for synodal document

The Catholic Church in Asia recently turned to artificial intelligence to create a document for use by the wider Church in order that its members might more closely "walk together." The Vatican's official media outlet, Vatican News, published a report revealing that synod organizers in Asia had used artificial intelligence to help draft a final document, as Catholic news outlet The Pillar reported. A synod is a gathering, "traditionally of bishops," that helps the Church "to walk forward together in the same direction," notes the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation. The word "synod" comes from the Greek syn-hodos, meaning "the same way" or "the same path," it also notes. The Asian synodal continental assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, was held on Feb. 24-26 as part of the global synodal process.

Let me first emphasize something that's been mostly forgotten in the panic: Large Language Models can't become Artificial General Intelligences.

Artificial intelligence has become wildly popular for many Americans, but people over the age of 45 are trailing those younger than them on AI familiarity, a Fox News poll shows. Fifty-eight percent of registered voters over the age of 45 who were surveyed for the poll say they are not familiar with AI technology such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. Only 41% of registered voters over 45 reported they are familiar with the technology. The figures stand in stark contrast to younger Americans, with a whopping 65% of registered voters under the age of 45 reporting they are familiar with AI tech, such as ChatGPT.
