Farmers in the United Kingdom have started using artificial intelligence (AI) systems to help monitor their fields and protect them from dangerous creatures -- such as animals and insects. "It's pretty much like having a real human sitting here 24/7 and listening when we tell it to listen," developer Conrad Young said of his Chirrup system, which can identify bird species from recordings of chirps. The British-made program analyzes the "dawn chorus," or the early morning chirping that occurs when birds greet the sunrise. With each successive recording, the program is able to better identify all the birds in the area and help create a detailed database of the total biodiversity in the area.

In an interview with BBC Radio, McCartney, speaking about AI, said "we were able to use that kind of thing when Peter Jackson did the film'Get Back' where it was us making the Let It Be album." "And he was able to extricate John's voice from a ropey little bit of cassette where it had John's voice and a piano – he could separate them with AI. They tell the machine'that is a voice, this is a guitar, lose the guitar.' And he did that," McCartney continue.

Paul McCartney has revealed to BBC Radio 4 that he's using AI to turn a John Lennon demo into one last song for The Beatles. The technology helped extract Lennon's voice to get a "pure" version that could be mixed into a finished composition. The piece will be released later this year, McCartney says. McCartney didn't name the song, but it's believed to be "Now and Then," a 1978 love song Lennon put on cassettes meant for the other former Beatle. The Guardian notes the tune was considered for release as a reunion song alongside tracks that did make the cut, such as "Free As A Bird," but there wasn't much to it -- just a chorus, a crude backing track and the lightest of verses.

The United Nations secretary-general has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to spread disinformation and hate, as he backed a proposal for the creation of an international watchdog to monitor the technology. Speaking at the launch of a new policy on disinformation on Monday, Antonio Guterres said that while technological advancement has been used for some good, the risks posed by AI threatens democracy and human rights. Guterres said he backs a proposal by some artificial intelligence executives for the creation of a watchdog body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Generative AI technology – which can perform natural language processing tasks such as answering questions, summarising text and even generating lines of code – has captivated the public since ChatGPT launched six months ago. AI has also become a focus of concern over its ability to create misinformation and deep fakes, which are AI-generated images and videos that mimic people.

Paste, Inpaint and Harmonize via Denoising: Subject-Driven Image Editing with Pre-Trained Diffusion Model

Text-to-image generative models have attracted rising attention for flexible image editing via user-specified descriptions. However, text descriptions alone are not enough to elaborate the details of subjects, often compromising the subjects' identity or requiring additional per-subject fine-tuning. We introduce a new framework called \textit{Paste, Inpaint and Harmonize via Denoising} (PhD), which leverages an exemplar image in addition to text descriptions to specify user intentions. In the pasting step, an off-the-shelf segmentation model is employed to identify a user-specified subject within an exemplar image which is subsequently inserted into a background image to serve as an initialization capturing both scene context and subject identity in one. To guarantee the visual coherence of the generated or edited image, we introduce an inpainting and harmonizing module to guide the pre-trained diffusion model to seamlessly blend the inserted subject into the scene naturally. As we keep the pre-trained diffusion model frozen, we preserve its strong image synthesis ability and text-driven ability, thus achieving high-quality results and flexible editing with diverse texts. In our experiments, we apply PhD to both subject-driven image editing tasks and explore text-driven scene generation given a reference subject. Both quantitative and qualitative comparisons with baseline methods demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in both tasks. MACARONS: Mapping And Coverage Anticipation with RGB Online Self-Supervision

We introduce a method that simultaneously learns to explore new large environments and to reconstruct them in 3D from color images only. This is closely related to the Next Best View problem (NBV), where one has to identify where to move the camera next to improve the coverage of an unknown scene. However, most of the current NBV methods rely on depth sensors, need 3D supervision and/or do not scale to large scenes. Our method requires only a color camera and no 3D supervision. It simultaneously learns in a self-supervised fashion to predict a "volume occupancy field" from color images and, from this field, to predict the NBV. Thanks to this approach, our method performs well on new scenes as it is not biased towards any training 3D data. We demonstrate this on a recent dataset made of various 3D scenes and show it performs even better than recent methods requiring a depth sensor, which is not a realistic assumption for outdoor scenes captured with a flying drone.
