Slaughter and May becomes latest magic circle firm to embrace artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

New robot-style tech is designed to "think like a lawyer" Uber-traditional magic circle outfit Slaughter and May has become the latest firm to put pen to paper on a deal that will see it use artificial intelligence (AI). The system (or cool robot as Legal Cheek likes to think of it) is called Luminance, and has been created by a team of lawyers and mathematicians. Thanks to financial backing from Invoke Capital -- a technology investment fund -- and research and development courtesy of the University of Cambridge, Luminance will, according to its creators, "transform the legal due diligence process." Luminance, which appears to be some sort of super legal mind, will be able to read (and understand) hundreds of pages of complex legal documentation every minute. According to Luminance's CEO, Emily Foges, the AI system will be "trained to think like a lawyer."

Georgia's voter-registration process violates the law, lawsuit charges

Los Angeles Times

Georgia's voter-registration process violates the Voting Rights Act and has prevented tens of thousands of residents, mostly minorities, from registering to vote, according to a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday. Under a policy implemented in 2010, people aren't added to the voter rolls if identifying information on their applications doesn't exactly match information in databases maintained by the Georgia Department of Driver Services or the Social Security Administration, the lawsuit says. "What Georgia is doing is denying people the ability to make it onto the registration rolls at the outset, which is what's so problematic about this matching program," said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The organization said it filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Gainesville, in north Georgia, along with other legal organizations on behalf of a coalition of civil rights groups. It's no secret that partisan state legislators, once in power, frequently try to alter voting laws to give their party an advantage.

A father was shot and killed late Tuesday after he opened the front door of his Woodland Hills home expecting a pizza delivery, officials said. The 37-year-old man was at home in the 4900 block of Medina Drive with his wife and young daughter at 11:50 p.m. when he answered the front door. A Los Angeles police detective told KTLA-TV they think the man opened the door because he had ordered a pizza. Instead, he was met by unidentified assailants. That's when police said he was shot and killed outside his home.

Experts discuss the costs and benefits created by developments brought on by Artificial Intelligence. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has established itself at the forefront of technological innovation. That is precisely why AI is the focus of the Hot Topic at the 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), 'AI: From Lofty Dream to Technology Driver', this September 20 at the New University in Heidelberg. The session is comprised of a panel discussion with leading researchers debating the current scientific trends in AI and its applications. That is followed by a broader discussion that dives into how the developments in AI affect our lives and society.

Slaughters strikes deal with AI technology startup Luminance

#artificialintelligence

Slaughter and May has signed a deal to use a new artificial intelligence (AI) system called Luminance which it helped create with backing from a technology investment company set up by Autonomy co-founder Mike Lynch. The firm worked closely with Luminance Technologies, which has been funded with capital from Invoke Capital, for several months to test and pilot the software Luminance claims will transform the due diligence process on M&A deals. The elite magic circle firm is the only law firm to have piloted Luminance prior to its launch, though several others are also interested in piloting the technology. Its expertise on deals and due diligence was used to help improve the technology. Slaughters has signed a contract to use the technology going forward, though the details around this are not yet clear.
