Oregon sheriff describes takeover of wildlife refuge as far from peaceful
The takeover of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon by anti-government protesters wasn't violent, a county sheriff testified, but it was far from peaceful. "Certainly it's not normal to have a hundred people walking around with firearms on our streets," Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward said Wednesday, becoming the first witness to testify in the trial of Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan and five others charged with conspiracy in the 41-day takeover of a federal wildlife preserve in southeast Oregon. Ward testified in the federal courthouse here that features a wall engraved with a quote from Thomas Jefferson: "The boisterous sea of liberty is never without a wave." The sheriff told the jury how such a wave, ridden by Ammon Bundy and his supporters, came crashing down on Harney County early this year. On Jan. 2, Ward was watching what he thought was a live TV feed of a Bundy-led rally just three blocks from his office in Burns.

For decades, environmentalists have rhapsodized about the tranquil beauty of California's deserts while battling fiercely with energy companies, the government and within their own ranks over what if any power production should occur on those sun-baked, wind-blown, geothermally active expanses of land.

Lawyers replaced by robots? UK start-up aims to cut out 'grunt work'
LONDON The entrepreneur behind British software company Autonomy has invested in a start-up called Luminance that uses artificial intelligence to read documents and speed up the legal process around deals, potentially cutting out some lawyers. Mike Lynch, who founded technology investment fund Invoke Capital after leaving Autonomy, said on Wednesday he saw great potential in Luminance, which was set up by Cambridge University students and has worked with lawyers at Slaughter and May to develop software to analyze documents. "You can see the excitement around things like driverless cars, so this being all about contracts doesn't sound quite as riveting, but I actually think it's going to have a very big impact" Lynch told Reuters. "Lawyers will be able to do the things that matter rather than the grunt work, they can add better value by doing better analysis of what is found, rather than trying to plough through 50,000 documents." Founded by a combination of lawyers, experts in deals and mathematicians, Luminance has created software that it says can read and understand hundreds of pages of documents every minute, with clients charged according to usage.
Trial opens for alleged 'all-star team' of Chicago gangsters
The Hobos gang came calling for Keith Daniels on an April evening three years ago. Daniels, a key witness in a drug trafficking case against the gang's feared leader, had been relocated by authorities to the southern Chicago suburb of Dolton for his safety. But when the 27-year-old father pulled into his driveway with his wife and her two young kids, a gunman walked up and opened fire through the windshield, according to court records. Daniels bailed out of the car and tried to run but was quickly cut down by more than two dozen bullets as the children, ages 6 and 4, screamed in the backseat. After the assailant jumped into a waiting SUV and sped off, Daniels' wife called 911 to report her husband had just been shot.
Justice Department is investigating Wells Fargo sales tactics
The Justice Department is investigating Wells Fargo & Co.'s improper sales tactics, according to a person familiar with the probe. Federal prosecutors in San Francisco and New York are in the early stages of an investigation that could lead to criminal or civil charges, the person said Wednesday. Last week, the San Francisco bank agreed to pay 185 million to settle investigations by Los Angeles City Atty. The sales tactics, first uncovered by the Los Angeles Times in 2013, involved thousands of bank employees opening as many as 2 million accounts that customers did not authorize in order to meet aggressive sales goals. The local and federal investigations described some of the steps employees took to open the accounts as fraudulent and illegal.
Woman at center of Bay Area police sex crimes scandal will return to California to testify against cops
The teenage woman whose allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of several police officers rocked the Bay Area law enforcement community will return to California to testify against them, her attorney said Wednesday. Jasmine Abuslin, 19, of Richmond, was freed from the Martin County Jail in Florida on Wednesday morning after accepting a plea deal to settle allegations that she bit a security guard during a violent clash at a drug rehabilitation facility last month. Pamela Price, an Oakland civil rights attorney who is representing Abuslin, said Abuslin now plans to return home where she will serve as the key witness in the prosecution of at least seven current and former East Bay law enforcement officers. "We're going home as soon as we can," Price said at a news conference in Stuart, Fla. Abuslin, who has previously used the pseudonym Celeste Guap, claimed during a television news interview earlier this year that she had sex with at least a dozen Oakland police officers, and that some of the encounters occurred while she was underage. She also accused officers of leaking information to her about planned prostitution raids in exchange for sex.
Do We Need Protection From AI Or AI From Us?
Artificial Intelligence has come a long way from science fiction to providing innovative, and life-changing solutions in the real world. AI is a form of intelligence exhibited by machines, where machine learning methods teach machines how to perform tasks that humans either can't do or at which machines are more efficient and productive. AI never stands still and it has become a subject of ethical debates, including how to exploit AI but not harm the humanity but also how to treat an artificial intellect in terms of rights and freedoms? Machines we see today are already capable of performing full-time both industrial and non-industrial jobs, they can speak, learn, and even have sexual relationships with humans. These factors lead to questions of whether the time has come to institutionalize robots and give them rights and freedoms, because at the moment, the creation of conscious entity is not prevented by laws or physics.
SERAPEUM EXPERT SYSTEM
An Expert system solves problems that are normally solved by human experts. We believe that SERAPEUM is even better in the sense that the speed of responses is unmatched by a human being. An expert system consists of a knowledge base of the domain, in our case tax law that draws both from public databases or private, reasoning mechanisms to apply knowledge to problems that are proposed mechanisms to explain the users the reasoning used when providing a response and mechanisms of learning and acquiring new knowledge. SERAPEUM also provides references to information that is based (whether Judgments, Legislation and Consultations resolved by the Director General). To create a knowledge base is necessary to have at least one human expert's domain. In our case has been formed through questionnaires and experience accumulated over time of various professionals in tax law.
