Comment: 'We can't leave Silicon Valley to solve AI's ethical issues'

#artificialintelligence

So, hands up who was woken up by Alexa this morning? Or now has Google Home finding their favourite radio station for them? Or had fun over the holidays trying to get Siri to tell them a joke? Artificial intelligence is now more accessible and becoming mainstream. The rapid development and evolution of AI technologies, while unleashing opportunities for business and communities across the world, have prompted a number of important overarching questions that go beyond the walls of academia and hi-tech research centres in Silicon Valley. Governments, business and the public alike are demanding more accountability in the way AI technologies are used, and are trying to find a solution to the legal and ethical issues that will derive from the growing integration of AI in people's daily lives.

The quiet and creeping normalisation of facial recognition technology

At face value it's remarkably convenient โ€“ and really, really cool. If you live in Bournemouth and fancy a night out, you no longer have to worry about squeezing your passport in and out of your pocket just to get through the door of a club, pub, or bar. Instead of relying on traditional forms of ID to verify your age, you can now use Yoti โ€“ an app that uses facial recognition to prove that you are you. Five nightclubs and bars in Bournemouth are now accepting the app as ID. After downloading, all you have to do is scan both your face and your passport (or driver's license), and then take your phone on a night out.

How to brace yourself for the future of work

#artificialintelligence

Last summer I wrote about Forum for the Future's report "Future of Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace." The topic of the Future of Work is getting a lot of coverage. My interest lies in how the Future of Work applies to sustainability. In March, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business' Center for Responsible Business will hold a "Future of Work" conference lead by Faris Natour, principal and co-founder of Article One Advisors and leader of the Center's Human Rights and Business Initiative. I spoke with him about how sustainability practitioners can create strategies and partnerships that minimize the risks and maximize the positive impacts of these changes.

'We Swipe Left' On Tinder's 'Discriminatory' Pricing, Court Says

NPR Technology

A California judge said "we swipe left, and reverse" a lower court's ruling. A California judge said "we swipe left, and reverse" a lower court's ruling. A California appeals court has found the dating app Tinder's pricing model to be discriminatory and says the company must stop charging older customers more for its paid premium service. Tinder has argued that the pricing difference on its Tinder Plus service was based on market research finding "customers age 30 and younger have less capacity to pay for premium services" and they "need a lower price to pull the trigger." But Judge Brian Currey, writing for California's 2nd District Court of Appeal earlier this week, wrote that Tinder "employs an arbitrary, class-based, generalization about older users' incomes as a basis for charging them more than younger users."

CES is the world's biggest tech show, focusing on the business of consumer technologies. It has served as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies for 50 years -- the global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the marketplace. If you want to know what gadgets and tech will be changing your life in the near future, it is the place to be every year, in January, in Las Vegas, Nevada. New tech happens here; but, it doesn't stay here..This year, Artificial Intelligence (I hate the term, but it is what it is), was the overarching theme of CES 2018. Smart things were everywhere, and the advances in AI were evident.

Man who used drone to smuggle drugs into US sentenced to 12 years in jail, officials say

FOX News

Agents found Jorge Rivera in possession of 13 pounds of methamphetamine in Aug. 2017 when he was trying to use a drone to smuggle drugs across the border. A 25-year-old man who was previously arrested after using a drone to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, border officials announced. A jury sentenced Jorge Rivera on Wednesday after he was convicted last week of trying to traffic 13 pounds of methamphetamine into the United States during the summer, according to a release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Rivera was detained on the night of Aug. 8, 2017 after a border patrol agent saw a drone flying across the border near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the original arrest report said. An officer later reportedly located the suspect who was operating the drone and found him in possession of a bag containing "multiple plastic-wrapped packages containing methamphetamine."

Should We Regulate "Dangerous" AI Now or Wait?

#artificialintelligence

Now that artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a what-if scenario that gets tech gurus frenzied with the possibilities, but it's in use and impacting our everyday lives, there is renewed discussion about how this exciting -- yet powerful and potentially problematic -- technology should be regulated. On one side of the issue are those who feel it's premature to begin the discussion, while at the other end of the spectrum, there are those who feel as if the discussion is dreadfully behind No matter where you stand on the issue, we can all agree that AI is here to stay. Why Do We Need AI Regulation? Proponents of AI regulation such as Stephen Hawking fear that AI could destroy humanity if we aren't proactive to avoid the risks of unfettered AI such as "powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many." He sees regulation as the key to allowing AI and humankind to coexist in a peaceful and productive future.
