Should AI Researchers Get Special Access to Visas?
Last year the annual artificial intelligence conference NeurIPS invited 230 researchers from Africa to attend a "Black in AI" workshop in Montreal. It was a great opportunity to bring some diversity to the field of AI. Sadly, however, the Canadian government denied visas for about a third of the Africans invited to the workshop. Many others were unable to attend because the Canadian government took too long to process their visas. The Partnership on AI--a group founded by Amazon, Facebook, Google's DeepMind subsidiary, Microsoft, and IBM--contends that these sorts of visa issues are a threat to the development of AI.
Big Tech's 'Nemesis' in EU Gets New Term-And More Power
Ursula von der Leyen, the incoming president of the EU's powerful executive arm, promoted Vestager to a commission executive vice-president overseeing the EU's digital innovation and leadership efforts, including artificial intelligence. "Margarethe Vestager will coordinate the whole agenda and be the commissioner for competition," von der Leyen said at a press conference . Von der Leyen has said that by the end of her first 100 days in office, she wants to draw up legislation for a European approach on the "human and ethical implications" of artificial intelligence. The Computer & Communications Industry Association, a lobby group with members including Google, Facebook and Amazon, reacted cautiously to Vestager's reappointment. "We encourage the new Commissioners to assess the impact of all the recent EU tech regulation to ensure that future legislation will be evidence-based, proportionate and beneficial," it said in a statement.

Mitigating Liability with XAI: The Case for Standardization Stanford Law School
The legal value of XAI can be significant, especially (though by no means exclusively) in mitigating developer and end-user liability.ยน Though it is somewhat early to presume that the perfect information model introduced in The Role of Explainable AI (XAI) in Regulating AI Behavior: Delivery of "Perfect Information"can be viewed as a mature standard, the model does possess the necessary proto qualities and can be reasonably viewed as a proto standard. Therefore, a properly developed XAI is one that possesses, at a minimum, all the attributes of perfect information. And once that parameter is fixed, the XAI is deemed properly developed and ready to provide a variety of risk mitigation benefits. One example of how this can work is in dispositive-centric efforts, including in crafting safe harbors.
Latest Study Shows Rise in Patent Applications Related to AI Technology
The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a topical subject and one which is now part of our everyday lives. The possibilities offered by AI technology are immeasurable, but with this also come challenges, in particular with Intellectual Property (IP) rights. In a new series entitled'Tech Trends', the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) have released a report which examines the trends of AI over the last number of years and how the intellectual property landscape can learn and adjust to the constant evolution of AI. You can find this report here if you would like to know more. In previous articles we have seen how AI is driving developments in both technology and business, its rapid growth has revolutionised many aspects of our lives from how we work, travel and communicate.
Ethics in Artificial Intelligence
Ethics in machine learning are what comes to mind when we imagine a worst case scenario in the context of artificial intelligence. As an example, we can think of HAL 9000 from '2001: A Space Odyssey' and Skynet from the'Terminator' films or more recently Ultron from the'Avengers'. Sadly, the main thinking behind most of the depicted self aware artificial intelligences is that they become sentient with the sole purpose of destroying the human race to ensure its survival. While such a scenario is not impossible or thankfully a ways off from this type of dystopian future. There are however pressing ethical matters in AI that we need to be considering right now.
Informatica Invests in AI and Machine Learning Startup GreenBay Technologies
