Ethical Opportunities for AI: Protecting Humans from Ourselves

#artificialintelligence

Aside from the immature design of many AI applications, another ethical pitfall presents itself in the way we are using these applications. We are designing AI for tasks that could (and should) be done by humans and neglecting to use AI where it is urgently needed -- namely, in repairing our online ecosystem. It is human nature to have opinions. Many of pride ourselves on the fact-based nature of our opinions -- whether they be based on news stories, personal experience, a book we read recently, etc. However, even the strongest opinions are subject to bias, and it is becoming easier than ever to bias our opinions through social media.

50 AI & Machine Learning startups to watch in Finland

#artificialintelligence

Recently, I've curated a list of 50 Finnish startups in the field of AI & Machine Learning for those who are looking for business partners or companies to invest in. If you are an international investor who wants to connect with one of the startups, feel free to drop me a message. I can make the intro and provide the companies' investor pitch deck to you if it is available. You can also use Finder.fi to check the company's revenue development. If you are an ambitious entrepreneur (based in Finland) who is working on the next world-changing idea and is looking for funding, let's meet! I'll be happy to discuss how we can help you with the fundraising process (for free). Most of the following information is from the company website. But if you've spotted an error, please let me know and I will revise accordingly. "AISpotter has developed a time-saving, fast service for coaches all around the world. Our goal is to combine high-end technology and sports of any kind. With real-time analysis, coaches and teams are given the power to be one step ahead in team development." "We've taken over 30 years of recognized University of Oulu Machine Vision Group technology and adapted it to improve your sports game. By combining state-of-the-art machine learning and computer vision in our unique way, we provide automatic and fast analysis service for your game."

An AI regulation strategy that could really work

#artificialintelligence

When even the companies developing AI themselves agree with the need for regulation, it is time to stop discussing abstract principles and get down to the business of how to regulate a rapidly advancing technology landscape. It is clear that our regulatory system needs an update. If we try to regulate 21st century technology and beyond with 20th century tools, we'll get none of the benefits of regulation and all of the downsides. So, if we need to reinvent the rules to keep pace with the technological change advanced by the likes of Google, Amazon, and Facebook, where do we start? Google's Sundar Pichai is right that technology companies cannot simply build AI and leave it to the will of the market. But what we can do is try to use the best traits of markets -- competition, transparency, rapid iteration -- to reform our regulatory system.

The measure and mismeasure of fairness: a critical review of fair machine learning

#artificialintelligence

We've visited the topic of fairness in the context of machine learning several times on The Morning Paper (see e.g. I'm still picking up new insights every time I revisit the topic though, and today's paper choice is no exception. In 1911 Russell & Whitehead published Principia Mathematica, with the goal of providing a solid foundation for all of mathematics. In 1931 Gรถdel's Incompleteness Theorem shattered the dream, showing that for any consistent axiomatic system there will always be theorems that cannot be proven within the system. In case you're wondering where on earth I'm going with thisโ€ฆ it's a very stretched analogy I've been playing with in my mind.

New humanities-led network will put social justice at the heart of AI research

#artificialintelligence

The humanities-led network will build on research in AI ethics, orienting it around practical issues of social justice, distribution, governance and design, and seek to inform the development of policy and practice. The JUST AI network will connect researchers and practitioners from across philosophy, law, media and communications, human-computer interaction, ethnography, user-centred design, data science, computer sciences and social sciences. It will begin by mapping the landscape and identifying opportunities to join up research across disciplines. It will deliver a programme of activity to include workshops, written and creative outputs and peer-reviewed articles, and lay the foundations for future multidisciplinary research collaborations. Research and debate about the ethical and social risks and impacts of data and AI is often focussed on either abstract principles such as fairness, transparency and rights, or on purely technical approaches.

Trust in Data Science: Collaboration, Translation, and Accountability in Corporate Data Science Projects

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The trustworthiness of data science systems in applied and real-world settings emerges from the resolution of specific tensions through situated, pragmatic, and ongoing forms of work. Drawing on research in CSCW, critical data studies, and history and sociology of science, and six months of immersive ethnographic fieldwork with a corporate data science team, we describe four common tensions in applied data science work: (un)equivocal numbers, (counter)intuitive knowledge, (in)credible data, and (in)scrutable models. We show how organizational actors establish and re-negotiate trust under messy and uncertain analytic conditions through practices of skepticism, assessment, and credibility. Highlighting the collaborative and heterogeneous nature of real-world data science, we show how the management of trust in applied corporate data science settings depends not only on pre-processing and quantification, but also on negotiation and translation. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for data science research and practice, both within and beyond CSCW.

Time is ripe for legislation containing compulsory 'pre-litigation mediation': CJI India News - Times of India

#artificialintelligence

Time is ripe for legislation containing compulsory'pre-litigation mediation': CJI NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India S A Bobde on Saturday said the time is ripe to devise a comprehensive legislation which contains "compulsory pre-litigation mediation" that would ensure efficiency and reduce the time of pendency for parties as well as courts. Speaking at the 3rd edition of of an international conference on'Arbitration in the Era of Globalisation', Justice Bobde said a robust "arbitration bar" is critical to the development of institutional arbitration in India as it would ensure availability and accessibility of practitioners with knowledge and experience. Justice Bobde said that today arbitration plays an essential role in the global infrastructure of international trade, commerce and investment and as an integral member of the global community and a trading and investment giant, how India engages with international arbitration has important ramifications on international trans-boundary flows of trade, commerce and investments as a whole. "The pre-institution mediation and settlement as mentioned in the Commercial Courts Act would pave the way for many more institutions to emphasize on the need of pre-litigation mediation considering its very many benefits. "I think the time is ripe to devise a comprehensive legislation which contains compulsory pre-litigation mediation and a remedy for the biggest drawback in a mediation agreement that is to say the unenforceability of an agreement arrived at a mediation would ensure efficiency and also reduce the time pendency for parties as well as the courts," he said. While talking about India's role in international arbitration, Justice Bobde said, "In recent times, globalisation has led to the dramatic growth in cross-border transactions involving India, which has led to an increasing demand for cross-border arbitration.
