US regulators launch investigation into self-driving Teslas after series of crashes

The Guardian

The preliminary evaluation by NHTSA is the first step before potentially seeking a recall of the vehicles. The preliminary evaluation by NHTSA is the first step before potentially seeking a recall of the vehicles. US automobile safety regulators have opened an investigation into Tesla vehicles equipped with its full self-driving technology over traffic-safety violations after a series of crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the electric carmaker's self driving assistance system, which requires drivers to pay attention and intervene if needed, had "induced vehicle behaviour that violated traffic safety laws". The preliminary evaluation by the NHTSA is the first step before potentially seeking a recall of the vehicles if it believes they pose a risk to safety.

InfoCD: A Contrastive Chamfer Distance Loss for Point Cloud Completion Fangzhou Lin 1,2 Y un Yue

Neural Information Processing Systems

A point cloud is a discrete set of data points sampled from a 3D geometric surface. Chamfer distance (CD) is a popular metric and training loss to measure the distances between point clouds, but also well known to be sensitive to outliers. We propose InfoCD, a novel contrastive Chamfer distance loss, and learn to spread the matched points to better align the distributions of point clouds. As such InfoCD leads to an improved surface similarity metric.

TIME Best Inventions Hall of Fame

TIME - Tech

In 2000 TIME's editors sat down to select three inventions of the year, one each in consumer technology, medical science, and basic industry. They found so many interesting ones along the way that they included dozens of others, from an unbreakable lightbulb to paper that was easier to recycle. It was the start of our annual hunt for the most exciting innovations changing our lives, and the future. Since then, TIME has covered hundreds of inventions, from the esoteric (clouds featured more than once) to essential, including life-changing medicines, technological breakthroughs, new foods, nearly every new Apple product category, and even a few great ideas that didn't quite catch on. As TIME publishes the 2025 list, we're also assembling the Best Inventions Hall of Fame: the 25 most iconic inventions we covered in the past quarter century. Almost all women in the U.S. use contraception at some point in their lives, and in 2001 a new option came on the market, the vaginal ring. As TIME wrote when including it among the year's best inventions, "Some women hate taking pills. In early October the FDA approved use of the NuvaRing, a thin flexible plastic ring that women can flatten like a rubber band and insert once a month into the vagina."

Supplementary material 1 Dataset documentation

Neural Information Processing Systems

In this section, we follow the Datasheets for Datasets framework Gebru et al., 2020 to document the Who created the dataset (e.g., which team, research group) and on behalf of which Who funded the creation of the dataset? This work is funded by Digital Futures in the project EO-AI4GlobalChange. What do the instances that comprise the dataset represent (e.g., documents, photos, Each instance is one image consisting of 23 channels. How many instances are there in total (of each type, if appropriate)? There are 13 607 images in total.
