Artificial Intelligence Finally Gets Governance, Former Healthcare CFO

The American Institute of Artificial Intelligence is announcing the launch of the world's first and most comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Governance Model and product. Built by performing comprehensive literature reviews and analysis from several fields (Political Science, Sociology. Economics, Philosophy, Computer Science, Ethics, Theology, Law, Communications, Business, Finance, Neuroscience, and many others), the AI Governance Model is designed to address thousands of data points through multi-dimensional analysis. To address public concerns, improve safety of humans, create transparency, and achieve social good and regulatory compliance, the model can be used by different types of entities including small, medium and large companies, government agencies, institutions and others. "Recent research indicates that more than half of UK adults are worried about robots. Our top intellectuals and leaders have warned us that artificial intelligence can pose a serious threat to humankind. Even the White House is concerned and has organized various conferences on the topic. At the American Institute of Artificial Intelligence, we believe that the best way to advance artificial intelligence is to do it responsibly. The AI revolution is by far the greatest change in the history of human civilization and should be approached with the same respect and consideration as we approach nuclear technology and climate change." said Al Naqvi, president of the American Institute of Artificial Intelligence.

Robotic Future For Apples May Be Coming, But Not Quite Yet

#artificialintelligence

Right now, your apples are harvested by humans. But Washington may soon face a shortage of apple pickers: as soon as 2021, according to Washington State University economist Karina Gallardo. The labor pool is shrinking with tougher immigration enforcement and a growing Mexican economy. The solution could be automation - as in robots. But don't expect to see them soon.

Tokyo stocks extend rally to fourth day

The Japan Times

Stocks extended their winning streak to a fourth session on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Thursday, backed by the yen's further drop against the dollar and a brighter U.S. economic outlook. The Nikkei average rose 79.86 points, or 0.47 percent, to finish at 16,899.10. On Wednesday, it gained 83.59 points. The Topix index closed up 6.12 points, or 0.45 percent, at 1,353.93, after climbing 7.60 points the previous day. The Tokyo market opened sharply higher thanks to the weaker yen and gains on Wall Street.

Biggest robot dairy in Asia setting up Japan's milk revival

The Japan Times

Jin Kawaguchiya gave up a career in finance to help revive Japan's ailing dairy industry, one robot at a time. In a country that relies increasingly on imported foods like cheese and butter, Japan's milk output tumbled over two decades, touching a 30-year low in 2014. Costs rose faster than prices as the economy stagnated, eroding profit, and aging farmers quit the business because they could not find enough young people willing to take on the hard labor of tending to cows every day. But technology is altering that dynamic. On Hokkaido, Japan's top dairy-producing region, Kawaguchiya transformed the 20-cow farm he inherited from his father-in-law 16 years ago into Asia's largest automated milking factory.

Tech billionaires convinced we live in the Matrix are secretly funding scientists to help break us out of it

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Bonsai and NVIDIA: Lowering the Barriers to AI NVIDIA Blog

In turn, each layer of abstraction lets a larger group of developers build more proficient programs in less time. AI is at the level of the assembly language currently. Toolkits like TensorFlow are phenomenally helpful for data scientists previously used to working at the equivalent of the machine code level, but there are only about 19,000 data scientists worldwide. Bonsai's AI Engine works at a higher level of abstraction so millions of developers, and the companies that employ them, can more efficiently build AI into applications and systems. Imagine when the developers at GE, the U.S. Department of Education or the Red Cross are able to program intelligent applications as quickly and collaboratively as they might program a database. Scaled with AI technology, the unique expertise and data locked within these organizations stand to create monumental change.

Presidential advisors want more information on artificial intelligence and cognitive technology. In order to use it to best serve the people, the White House asked what leaders should consider when applying technology like Watson to challenges and opportunities in matters like education, the economy and climate change. In it's public response, IBM wrote back: "We believe that many of the ambiguities and inefficiencies of the critical systems that facilitate life on this planet can be eliminated. And we believe that AI systems are the tools that will help us accomplish these ambitious goals."

Samsung buys AI assitant Viv, whose creators sold Siri to Apple

Los Angeles Times

Samsung Electronics Co. is joining the race to create the smartest digital assistant by acquiring Viv, a Silicon Valley start-up launched by the same entrepreneurs who sold Siri to Apple. The deal announced Wednesday provides Samsung with technology to compete against Google Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc. in the increasingly important field of programming computers to learn and respond as if they were human. The specialty, also known as artificial intelligence, has hatched a flock of voice-activated digital concierges -- such as Siri, Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana and Google's Assistant -- that work in personal computers, smartphones and Internet-connected speakers. Samsung plans to implant Viv into phones, televisions and a wide range of other devices. The South Korean company did not disclose how much it paid for the start-up.

Gamma Belief Networks

arXiv.org Machine Learning

To infer multilayer deep representations of high-dimensional discrete and nonnegative real vectors, we propose an augmentable gamma belief network (GBN) that factorizes each of its hidden layers into the product of a sparse connection weight matrix and the nonnegative real hidden units of the next layer. The GBN's hidden layers are jointly trained with an upward-downward Gibbs sampler that solves each layer with the same subroutine. The gamma-negative binomial process combined with a layer-wise training strategy allows inferring the width of each layer given a fixed budget on the width of the first layer. Example results illustrate interesting relationships between the width of the first layer and the inferred network structure, and demonstrate that the GBN can add more layers to improve its performance in both unsupervisedly extracting features and predicting heldout data. For exploratory data analysis, we extract trees and subnetworks from the learned deep network to visualize how the very specific factors discovered at the first hidden layer and the increasingly more general factors discovered at deeper hidden layers are related to each other, and we generate synthetic data by propagating random variables through the deep network from the top hidden layer back to the bottom data layer.
