Spacewalking astronauts upgrade station with new batteries

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Spacewalking astronauts hooked up fancy new batteries Friday on the International Space Station's sprawling power grid. NASA reported that all three lithium-ion batteries were up and running, a successful start to the space agency's long-term effort to upgrade the aging solar power system. Before venturing out, Commander Shane Kimbrough and Peggy Whitson got a hand from a robot that took care of most of the grunt work -- Dextre, a hulking machine with 11-foot arms. Peggy Whitson takes a spacewalk outside the International Space Station on Friday, Jan. 6, 2016. Whitson and Commander Shane Kimbrough went spacewalking to hook up fancy new batteries on the International Space Station's sprawling power grid.

Fintech in 2017: Automation Will Rule

#artificialintelligence

Without a doubt, 2016 was the year "disruption" became tangible. Events like Brexit and the U.S. election brought home the reality we are living in a fast-changing global society where a sense of anti-establishment and rebellion is accelerating change. This shows no sign of stopping in 2017, with new and existing technologies allowing institutions to ultimately offer more unique banking experiences. From my meetings with decision-making executives at the world's leading banks, here are the top five trends dominating their technology investment discussions: In 2017, several banks will undoubtedly take their first steps toward "conversational commerce," a term coined by Chris Messina of Uber to describe the future of messaging within apps. In 2016, we already saw several leaders like Santander and Bank of America announce their plans for chatbots; however, 2017 is the year when the rebirth of this very old technology will come into its own.

How do you change a battery in zero gravity? Step by careful step.

Christian Science Monitor | Science

January 6, 2017 --Two astronauts went spacewalking on Friday as they began the two- to three-year task of replacing all the batteries for the International Space Station's power grid. NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Peggy Whitson, the world's oldest most experienced spacewoman, undertook a risky 6.5-hour spacewalk outside the 250-mile-high station. Their mission was to wire up three new lithium-ion batteries, each about the size of half of a refrigerator that Houston controllers had already replaced remotely, via the station's onboard, 11-foot-long-armed robot Dextre. The project to swap out the station's decade-old nickel-hydrogen batteries began on New Year's Eve, 2016. The lithium-ion replacements are much more efficient, meaning only 24 will be required to replace the 48 old ones.

Artificial intelligence and cognitive computing: the what, why and where

#artificialintelligence

Although artificial intelligence (as a set of technologies, not in the sense of mimicking human intelligence) is here since a long time in many forms and ways, it's a term that quite some people, certainly IT vendors, don't like to use that much anymore – but artificial intelligence is real, for your business too. Instead of talking about artificial intelligence (AI) many describe the current wave of AI innovation and acceleration with – admittedly somewhat differently positioned – terms and concepts such as cognitive computing or focus on several real-life applications of artificial intelligence that often start with words such as "smart", "intelligent", "predictive" and, indeed, "cognitive", depending on the exact application – and vendor. Despite the term issues, artificial intelligence is essential for and in, among others, information management, medicine/healthcare, data analysis, digital transformation, security (cybersecurity and others), various consumer applications, scientific advances, FinTech, predictive systems and so much more. There are many reasons why several vendors doubt using the term artificial intelligence for AI solutions/innovations and often package them in another term (trust us, we've been there). Artificial intelligence (AI) is a term that has somewhat of a negative connotation in general perception but also in the perception of technology leaders and firms. One major issue is that artificial intelligence – which is really a broad concept/reality, covering many technologies and realities – has become like a thing we talk about and also seem to need to have an opinion/feeling about, with thanks to, among others, popular culture.

Video Friday: Expressive Robot, Luke Arm, and Cyborg Moth

IEEE Spectrum Robotics

Video Friday is your weekly selection of awesome robotics videos, collected by your Automaton bloggers. We'll also be posting a weekly calendar of upcoming robotics events for the next two months; here's what we have so far (send us your events!): Let us know if you have suggestions for next week, and enjoy today's videos. FLASH Robotics has recently previewed its new EMYS robot head. The popping-out eyes are gone in this version, which aims to be more kid friendly, but it remains one of the weirdest looking and most expressive robot heads we've ever seen: This video is part of the DARS 2016 paper, "Programmable Self-Disassembly for Shape Formation in Large-Scale Robot Collectives," by Melvin Gauci, Radhika Nagpal, and Michael Rubenstein.

Are Aliens Real? UFO Sighting In Chile Recorded On Video, Government Says

International Business Times

Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos (CEFAA), a Chilean government agency within the civil aeronautics directorate (the DGAC, roughly equivalent to the United States' Federal Aviation Administration) released a video taken by a Navy helicopter of a mysterious craft in 2014. The remarkable footage was captured by two naval officers on a helicopter-mounted Wescam infrared camera, typically used in covert, aerial surveillance. If you've seen Predator drone footage, you've seen these cameras in action. Captured west of Santiago at an altitude of approximately 4,500 feet (far lower than commercial airliners), the Unexplained Aerial Phenomenon (UAP, the new preferred term for UFOs) was first observed with the naked eye from an estimated distance of 35 to 40 miles. The helicopter crew -- a Navy captain and camera technician -- captured 10 minutes of some of the most baffling and well-sourced video ever taken of a UFO.
