President Donald Trump plans to meet with video game industry representatives as he considers responses to gun violence after the Florida school shooting that killed 17 people. The White House says attendees at Thursday's meeting include representatives of the Entertainment Software Association, the Entertainment Software Rating Board and the Parents Television Council. Others represent the Media Research Center, a video game distributor, a software company, along with the author of a book linking mass killings to violent video games. Florida's Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is among the lawmakers expected to attend. Trump has repeatedly referenced the violence in movies and video games during his public comments about guns and school safety since last month's Florida shooting.

Donald Trump will host executives from the video game industry at the White House on Thursday, resurrecting a debate over the link between violent video games and gun-related deaths in the aftermath of the Parkland high school shooting. The meeting comes as the president and lawmakers in Washington face continued pressure to act in the wake of the 14 February massacre at Marjory Stoneman High School, which left 17 people dead. Although the White House has provided few details on the meeting, Trump's focus on the role of violence in entertainment signaled the president may be embracing a more conservative response to the Parkland shooting, even as the push for stricter gun laws reaches a fever pitch. Each time there's a school shooting in America, someone inevitably points the finger at video games. Trump similarly targeted video games and movies for influencing children and young adults when discussing the Parkland tragedy at the White House last month.

Since 9/11, border patrol agencies around the world have focused on improving their abilities to quickly assess threats from passengers and cargo entering the country. Based on its work with several countries on border protection, Unisys developed the LineSight software, which uses advanced analytics that assesses risk in near real time. Rather than relying solely on pattern recognition based on historical data, LineSight assesses risk from the initial intent to travel and refines that assessment as current information becomes available -- beginning with a traveler's visa application, reservation, ticket purchase, seat selection, check-in and arrival, the company said. The software provides similar risk assessments for cargo shipments based on manifest forms, customs declaration or airline bills. If border agencies rely on patterns to spot border threats, "smugglers and terrorists become smarter on how to avoid those patterns," Mark Forman, global head of Unisys Public Sector, said.

Google is not only applying machine learning across its products, but also encouraging other developers to adopt it in third-party services and other use cases. It has now emerged that one of the latter examples is for drones from the U.S. government. Gizmodo this morning reported on a Google partnership last year with the U.S. Department of Defense to improve the latter organization's adoption of machine learning. The DoD's Project Maven is tasked with identifying objects in drone footage. Google supplied the military with TensorFlow APIs, which it notes in a statement are open source.

This is demonstrated in recent research from PwC, which indicates that women's jobs could be affected by automation over the next decade – with potentially 23% of women's jobs at risk, around 7% more than men. At a crucial time when the world is discussing and designing the way that AI will change the way we work, the higher risk of displacement felt by certain members of society must be made more visible and addressed alongside the serious skills shortage we are seeing in the tech sector amongst women.
