Towards an unanimous international regulatory body for responsible use of Artificial Intelligence [UIRB-AI]

Artificial Intelligence (AI), is once again in the phase of drastic advancements. Unarguably, the technology itself can revolutionize the way we live our everyday life. But the exponential growth of technology poses a daunting task for policy researchers and law makers in making amendments to the existing norms. In addition, not everyone in the society is studying the potential socio-economic intricacies and cultural drifts that AI can bring about. It is prudence to reflect from our historical past to propel the development of technology in the right direction. To benefit the society of the present and future, I scientifically explore the societal impact of AI. While there are many public and private partnerships working on similar aspects, here I describe the necessity for an Unanimous International Regulatory Body for all applications of AI (UIRB-AI). I also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of such an organization. To combat any drawbacks in the formation of an UIRB-AI, both idealistic and pragmatic perspectives are discussed alternatively. The paper further advances the discussion by proposing novel policies on how such organization should be structured and how it can bring about a win-win situation for everyone in the society.

According to recent research, AI is the largest commercial opportunity for Britain, projected to add ยฃ232 billion to the UK economy by 2030. SMEs and start-ups will play a significant role in grasping this. The segment highlighted by Theresa May during her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, where she told world leaders that the UK's strong start-up scene will be instrumental in making the UK a world leader in ethical AI. However, start-ups today still need to overcome some significant challenges before reaching their full potential.

Private companies are after market monopolies, German chancellor says. BERLIN -- Germany is at risk of losing its best experts on artificial intelligence to the world's private tech giants, Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Wednesday. "The big internet companies are really trying to get a market monopoly here," Merkel said during a panel discussion when asked what she has identified as some of the most pressing digital policy issues since taking office for a fourth term about three months ago. At the same time, the country's "startups still don't have enough ways to get funding when they get bigger and there's always a danger that they're snapped up from abroad," Merkel added. Earlier this week, Germany's leading artificial intelligence (AI) startups warned in a report that the country is falling behind in the research of artificial intelligence while at the same time, a lack of public and private investment is holding back the development of cutting-edge AI applications.


Babylon claims its chatbot beats GPs at medical exam

Claims that a chatbot can diagnose medical conditions as accurately as a GP have sparked a row between the software's creators and UK doctors. Babylon, the company behind the NHS GP at Hand app, says its follow-up software achieves medical exam scores that are on-par with human doctors. It revealed the artificial intelligence bot at an event held at the Royal College of Physicians. But another medical professional body said it doubted the AI's abilities. "No app or algorithm will be able to do what a GP does," said the Royal College of General Practitioners.


Silicon Valley Is Growing a Conscience

Silicon Valley likes to think it is an engine of progress, which in turn helps tech companies self-identify as standard-bearers of progressivism. And in many ways, Silicon Valley is progressive. Companies voiced opposition to President Trump's bigoted executive order barring transgender people from serving in the military, and they stood up against the Trump administration's Islamophobic travel ban. Many tech CEOs spoke out this month against the separation of families at the border. While long hours are de rigueur in Silicon Valley and the jobs are dominated by white males, many of these companies emphasize at least some progressive values in the workplace, hosting open forums for employees to discuss politics and internal dynamics, offering ample time off, and creating well-funded (if too frequently ineffective) diversity initiatives.

CRS-15 resupply mission sending artificial intelligence, diverse science to ISS

The first stage booster that launched NASA's TESS spacecraft is being reused for CRS-15. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- With the rocket's static fire successfully concluded, SpaceX appears to be on track for an early-morning launch of the company's 15th operational mission to resupply the International Space Station--CRS-15. The weather forecast currently calls for a 90 percent of favorable conditions for the instantaneous window, which opens at 5:41 a.m. EDT (09:41 GMT) on June 29, 2018, at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) in Florida. The mission, designated Commercial Resupply Services 15 (CRS-15), is expected to deliver more than 5,900 pounds (2,676 kilograms) of supplies, hardware, and research equipment to the orbiting outpost. Among its manifest, SpaceX's Dragon capsule is set to deliver an estimated 661 pounds (300 kilograms) under the auspices of the ISS' U.S. National Laboratory flight allotment.
