Microsoft India is using AI sensors to make farming and healthcare smart

China, the world's biggest agricultural producer, is leading the race when it comes to empowering farmers with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven technologies. The aim is clear: To help the community digitally record information to cut costs and increase yields -- with just a smartphone in their hands as AI leveraged Cloud computing to make sense of the data for farmers. India has now embarked on a journey to bring AI sensors into the fields. For Anant Maheshwari, the company's India President, Microsoft has begun empowering small-holder farmers in India to increase their income through higher crop yield and greater price control. "We are working with farmers, state governments, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to create an ecosystem for AI into farming," Maheshwari told IANS.

How China monitors its citizens using artificial intelligence in CCTV cameras

It is relatively well known that China has developed technology that can effectively monitor the country's citizens. Scientists working for The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) have been working on CCTV cameras which have artificial intelligence embedded in them for years. The software, known as Ensemble Net, has been trained using clips from CCTV cameras to identify people and track their movements across the country. It's been tested across the country and, according to reports, it is supposedly 90 per cent accurate. The system will be able to scan body shapes and facial features, before scanning its database to see if it finds a match.


Estimating multi-year 24/7 origin-destination demand using high-granular multi-source traffic data

Dynamic origin-destination (OD) demand is central to transportation system modeling and analysis. The dynamic OD demand estimation problem (DODE) has been studied for decades, most of which solve the DODE problem on a typical day or several typical hours. There is a lack of methods that estimate high-resolution dynamic OD demand for a sequence of many consecutive days over several years (referred to as 24/7 OD in this research). Having multi-year 24/7 OD demand would allow a better understanding of characteristics of dynamic OD demands and their evolution/trends over the past few years, a critical input for modeling transportation system evolution and reliability. This paper presents a data-driven framework that estimates day-to-day dynamic OD using high-granular traffic counts and speed data collected over many years. The proposed framework statistically clusters daily traffic data into typical traffic patterns using t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) and k-means methods. A GPU-based stochastic projected gradient descent method is proposed to efficiently solve the multi-year 24/7 DODE problem. It is demonstrated that the new method efficiently estimates the 5-minute dynamic OD demand for every single day from 2014 to 2016 on I-5 and SR-99 in the Sacramento region. The resultant multi-year 24/7 dynamic OD demand reveals the daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal and yearly change in travel demand in a region, implying intriguing demand characteristics over the years.

In my last column, I touched on the fact that much of the government was still shutdown due to the impasse over border wall funding. Truly, I thought that it would all be resolved by now. But with no end in sight, I wanted to talk about using technology--specifically artificial intelligence and drones--to create an impenetrable defense along our borders that would be mostly invisible and yet highly effective. Much of the technology needed to support such an endeavor already exists today, and such a system might just be acceptable to both sides of the great wall debate. First off, it's important to mention that walls by themselves have never been effective at stopping humans from moving through, over, under or around them.


U.K. government to invest £100M in artificial intelligence-focused Ph.D.s

As the hard date for Brexit approaches, the U.K. government announced it would invest £100 million ($130 million) to attract 1,000 new Ph.D. placements at universities across the country focused on artificial intelligence development, including for the life sciences industry. During his visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the head of Her Majesty's Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond, described the move as a way to help futureproof the U.K. economy going forward. The money is part of the country's Industrial Strategy and will fund research into technology for NHS hospitals, among other areas of the wider economy. According to the U.K. government, the country's digital sector has topped £130 billion and 2 million people, with the number of jobs growing at twice the rate of other segments. And, according to the Association for the British Pharmaceutical Industry, the U.K. serves as the third-largest life sciences R&D center, after the East and West coasts of the U.S. RELATED: Study says U.K. pipeline of advanced therapy research and products gaining strength "Today's investment will help our members get the talent they need to discover the treatments of the future," the ABPI's chief scientific officer, Carole Longson, said in a statement.
