How Harvard's human computers helped invent modern astronomy

The Harvard College Observatory (now the Center for Astrophysics) in Cambridge, Massachusetts has long been a bastion of astronomical research, its history stretching back to the center's founding in 1839. But for the first forty years of its existence, the HCO was quite literally an old boys club. While amateur female astronomers helped fund and even construct the observatory's telescopes, "it wasn't really seen as proper to allow them out on the roof, in the night, on their own, to actually use instruments," Daina Bouquin, Head Librarian of the Wolbach Library at the Center for Astrophysics and lead of the PHaEDRA project, told Engadget. "The beginning of the whole capacity to do that starts like photography, with people putting together these all-sky surveys," she continued. "And the first group of people to do that, to put together a full survey of the entire visible universe at the time was the Harvard Computers."

Nasa satellites disappear after flying past Mars

A pair of briefcase-sized Nasa spacecraft have been lost after they flew past Mars. The two robots – collectively known as Marco and nicknamed EVE and WALL-E – have flown so deep into space that the space agency is now unable to reach them, engineers said. It is unlikely the pair will ever be heard from again. It has been more than a month since the robots were last heard from and they are now millions of miles beyond the red planet. But Nasa considers the very fact it could talk to them at all a major success.

Batteries or a hydrogen fuel cell filled the platform's inner cavity to provide power for electric drive. In turn, the lightweight body could be easily swapped; any number of variants could be created. Before leaving GM in 2009, Burns worked on another concept vehicle, the "autonomous, shareable, and electric" EN-V.

San Francisco Wants to Ban Government Face Recognition

A San Francisco lawmaker is proposing what would be a nationwide first: a complete moratorium on local government use of facial-recognition technology. Introduced by San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin, the Stop Secret Surveillance Ordinance would ban all city departments from using facial-recognition technology and require board approval before departments purchase new surveillance devices. The bill regulates only local use, not use by private companies: The face-unlock feature included on the latest iPhone model, for example, would still be legal. Neighboring cities Berkeley and Oakland have passed similar rules, requiring public input and a privacy policy before officials implement new tech, but nowhere in the United States is facial recognition outright banned. Texas and Illinois require consent before collecting facial data, but don't ban the practice.

Facial Recognition Software Improves by a Factor of 20 Since 2014

Facial recognition software has gotten 20 times better at searching databases of facial photographs to find a matching image, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) recent evaluation of 127 software algorithms from 45 different developers--the bulk of the industry. This indicates there is a rapidly advancing marketplace for face-based biometric algorithms. The evaluation was based on the same test that was carried out in 2010 and 2014 to determine how well an algorithm can match a person's photo with a different one of the same person stored in a large database. This type of "one to many" search is often used to check for a person who might be applying for a visa or driver's license under a name different than their own. The algorithms were prototypes, submitted in 2018 as compiled libraries and were evaluated as black boxes behind a NIST-specified C testing interface.


Navy builds two new large surface attack drone ships

The Navy is building two new large drone ships to coordinate synchronized attacks, perform command and control across fleets of Unmanned Surface Vessels and conduct high-risk maritime missions such as anti-submarine operations, mine countermeasures, surface warfare, and forward-deployed surveillance. The new vessels, now in early stages of conceptual development, are intended to perform both manned and unmanned operations while networked to a smaller fleet of multi-mission USVs, Capt. Pete Small, Program Manager, Unmanned Maritime Systems, Naval Sea Systems Command, told reporters at the Surface Naval Association Symposium.


UK Launches £6m IoT Security Competition

The UK government is claiming to have a £6m pot of cash set aside for the winners of a new IoT security competition. The Technology Strategy Board, also known as Innovate UK, will only choose projects including an element of artificial intelligence or machine learning and those that have "a clear plan for commercialization." They must focus on at least one of: technologies to protect and recover data, intelligent control systems for buildings and smart home protection. Projects could also look at "complementary technologies" like 5G or blockchain, the government claimed. The idea is apparently to encourage companies to collaborate with the research community to drive new ideas in IoT security.
