Reranking partisan animosity in algorithmic social media feeds alters affective polarization Science
We recruited participants through two online platforms, CloudResearch and Bovitz, targeting US residents over 18 years old who self-identified as either Republican or Democrat and were active users of X (SM section S1.1). Qualified individuals were invited to complete a screening task, which included installing a browser extension that analyzed their X feed. To ensure the interventions could have a meaningful impact on participants' feeds, only those with at least 5% of posts related to politics or social issues were invited to participate. Figure S1 summarizes the recruitment funnel, including the number of individuals at each stage of the process. Participants were not instructed to use X in any particular way, but they received daily reminders if they had not used the platform that day.
Platform-independent experiments on social media Science
Social media is an important source of political information, yet there is little external oversight of platforms' ever-changing algorithms and policies. This opacity presents a major problem: Conducting a real-world experiment on the causal effects of platform features generally requires the collaboration of the platform being studied, which rarely happens, and even when it does, future platform changes may invalidate prior findings. The authors introduce a methodological paradigm for testing the effect of social media on partisan animosity without platform collaboration by reranking users' existing feeds using large language models (LLMs) and a browser extension. They find that changing the visibility of polarizing content can influence people's feelings about opposing partisans. Social media is in a period of upheaval.

EU proposal to delay parts of its AI Act signal a policy shift that prioritises big tech over fairness
The roll-out of the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act has hit a critical turning point. The act establishes rules for how AI systems can be used within the European Union. It officially entered into force on August 1 2024, although different rules come into effect at different times. The European Commission has now proposed delaying parts of the act until 2027. This follows intense pressure from tech companies and from the Trump administration.

Starting on November 27, a global team of scientists with the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) will kick off a two-month campaign to track the comet as it nears our planet . 'While it poses no threat, comet 3I/ATLAS presents a great opportunity for the IAWN community to perform an observing exercise due to its prolonged observability from Earth and high interest to the scientific community,' the UN explains on its website. 'This 3I/ATLAS campaign is the 8th IAWN observing exercise since 2017 - IAWN holds these exercises roughly once a year.' While 3I/ATLAS was only discovered in July 2025, the UN explained that this'comet campaign' has long been planned.
Bridging the Unavoidable A Priori: A Framework for Comparative Causal Modeling

AI/ML models have rapidly gained prominence as innovations for solving previously unsolved problems and their unintended consequences from amplifying human biases. Advocates for responsible AI/ML have sought ways to draw on the richer causal models of system dynamics to better inform the development of responsible AI/ML. However, a major barrier to advancing this work is the difficulty of bringing together methods rooted in different underlying assumptions (i.e., Dana Meadow's "the unavoidable a priori"). This paper brings system dynamics and structural equation modeling together into a common mathematical framework that can be used to generate systems from distributions, develop methods, and compare results to inform the underlying epistemology of system dynamics for data science and AI/ML applications.
Estimation in high-dimensional linear regression: Post-Double-Autometrics as an alternative to Post-Double-Lasso

Post-Double-Lasso is becoming the most popular method for estimating linear regression models with many covariates when the purpose is to obtain an accurate estimate of a parameter of interest, such as an average treatment effect. However, this method can suffer from substantial omitted variable bias in finite sample. We propose a new method called Post-Double-Autometrics, which is based on Autometrics, and show that this method outperforms Post-Double-Lasso.
Wavelet-Guided Water-Level Estimation for ISAC

Real-time water-level monitoring across many locations is vital for flood response, infrastructure management, and environmental forecasting. Yet many sensing methods rely on fixed instruments - acoustic, radar, camera, or pressure probes - that are costly to install and maintain and are vulnerable during extreme events. We propose a passive, low-cost water-level tracking scheme that uses only LTE downlink power metrics reported by commodity receivers. The method extracts per-antenna RSRP, RSSI, and RSRQ, applies a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to the RSRP to isolate the semidiurnal tide component, and forms a summed-coefficient signature that simultaneously marks high/low tide (tide-turn times) and tracks the tide-rate (flow speed) over time. These wavelet features guide a lightweight neural network that learns water-level changes over time from a short training segment. Beyond a single serving base station, we also show a multi-base-station cooperative mode: independent CWTs are computed per carrier and fused by a robust median to produce one tide-band feature that improves stability and resilience to local disturbances. Experiments over a 420 m river path under line-of-sight conditions achieve root-mean-square and mean-absolute errors of 0.8 cm and 0.5 cm, respectively. Under a non-line-of-sight setting with vegetation and vessel traffic, the same model transfers successfully after brief fine-tuning, reaching 1.7 cm RMSE and 0.8 cm MAE. Unlike CSI-based methods, the approach needs no array calibration and runs on standard hardware, making wide deployment practical. When signals from multiple base stations are available, fusion further improves robustness.
