On the complexity of logistic regression models

We investigate the complexity of logistic regression models which is defined by counting the number of indistinguishable distributions that the model can represent (Balasubramanian, 1997). We find that the complexity of logistic models with binary inputs does not only depend on the number of parameters but also on the distribution of inputs in a non-trivial way which standard treatments of complexity do not address. In particular, we observe that correlations among inputs induce effective dependencies among parameters thus constraining the model and, consequently, reducing its complexity. We derive simple relations for the upper and lower bounds of the complexity. Furthermore, we show analytically that, defining the model parameters on a finite support rather than the entire axis, decreases the complexity in a manner that critically depends on the size of the domain. Based on our findings, we propose a novel model selection criterion which takes into account the entropy of the input distribution. We test our proposal on the problem of selecting the input variables of a logistic regression model in a Bayesian Model Selection framework. In our numerical tests, we find that, while the reconstruction errors of standard model selection approaches (AIC, BIC, $\ell_1$ regularization) strongly depend on the sparsity of the ground truth, the reconstruction error of our method is always close to the minimum in all conditions of sparsity, data size and strength of input correlations. Finally, we observe that, when considering categorical instead of binary inputs, in a simple and mathematically tractable case, the contribution of the alphabet size to the complexity is very small compared to that of parameter space dimension. We further explore the issue by analysing the dataset of the "13 keys to the White House" which is a method for forecasting the outcomes of US presidential elections.
'Killer robots' to be taught ethics in world-topping Australian research project
The Australian Defence Force has a policy that decisions to kill will never be made solely by machines but rather will always include a human. But most senior military officers say computers with advanced artificial intelligence will increasingly help curate information, make recommendations and issue warnings that will shape battlefield commanders' decisions. The project will be partly a matter of figuring out exactly what people - including members of the military - deem ethical and then building that into autonomous military systems. The team will survey members of the military and the public to see what people think. "I don't think you can really build a robot to be ethical - or more ethical - without first understanding what we want from humans in war," Dr Galliott said.

While the wonders of artificial intelligence are often hyped beyond recognition, AI-powered recruitment software is actually offering real advantages to telecom businesses. "There is an extraordinary opportunity for AI-driven software to completely transform recruitment processes," Flynn adds. "Particularly in accelerating the candidate funnel, enhancing the candidate experience, identifying qualified candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences and reducing recruiters' administrative tasks." VMware is another early adopter.
Review: Riveting 'Apollo 11' takes us back in time with original moon mission footage
Truth may or may not be stranger than fiction, but it certainly can be more dramatically compelling. A documentary on the mission that took astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon and back half a century ago, "Apollo 11" has no talking heads telling us what it all means or modern re-creations like the unemotional Ryan Gosling-starring "First Man." Instead, as directed by Todd Douglas Miller, "Apollo 11" relies on footage shot and audio recorded at the time, and the results, from liftoff to landing to the journey back home, are completely riveting. "Apollo 11" succeeds as well as it does for several reasons, but a key one was the discovery in the National Archives of hours of large-format 65-millimeter color footage covering all aspects of the mission, footage that had never been seen by the public and was subsequently digitized to the highest resolution possible. Also discovered were 11,000 hours of audio recordings from key personnel on the ground as well as the astronauts way out in space. But just having great material does not guarantee a superior film, which is where Miller's skill and experience Miller come in.

With the passage of the Chronic Care Act, Medicare Advantage plans have been scrambling to figure out how to offer supplemental benefits to their members. Passed as part of a Bipartisan Budget Act last year, the Chronic Care Act promotes the use of benefits that maintain health or keep a beneficiary's health from deteriorating, and the benefits don't have to be health-related. Instead, they can include help for social determinants of health that include housing, nutrition and transportation. Michael Cantor, MD, chief medical officer at CareCentrix, a company that works with payers and providers to create programs that improve quality of care while lowering costs, says social determinants are "significant barriers" to achieving good health for some beneficiaries and the Chronic Care Act is opening doors to improve outcomes. Under the act, the supplements can also be tailored to the individual, when it comes to qualifications.

What Would the Father of Cybernetics Think About A.I. Today?
The Human Use of Human Beings, Norbert Wiener's 1950 popularization of his highly influential book Cybernetics: or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine (1948), investigates the interplay between human beings and machines in a world in which machines are becoming ever more computationally capable and powerful. It is a remarkably prescient book, and remarkably wrong. Written at the height of the Cold War, it contains a chilling reminder of the dangers of totalitarian organizations and societies, and of the danger to democracy when it tries to combat totalitarianism with totalitarianism's own weapons. Wiener's Cybernetics looked in close scientific detail at the process of control via feedback. Because he was immersed in problems of control, Wiener saw the world as a set of complex, interlocking feedback loops, in which sensors, signals, and actuators such as engines interact via an intricate exchange of signals and information. The engineering applications of Cybernetics were tremendously influential and effective, giving rise to rockets, robots, automated assembly lines, and a host of precision-engineering techniques--in other words, to the basis of contemporary industrial society.

China is working on an extremely aggressive multi-billion-dollar plan for government investment into AI research and applications. The U.S. government has been slower to act. The Obama administration issued a report on AI near the end of its term. Since then, little has happened โ until a Feb. 11 executive order from President Donald Trump encouraging the country to do more with AI.
Can AI Detect Deepfakes To Help Ensure Integrity of U.S. 2020 Elections?
A perfect storm arising from the world of pornography may threaten the U.S. elections in 2020 with disruptive political scandals having nothing to do with actual affairs. Instead, face-swapping "deepfake" technology that first became popular on porn websites could eventually generate convincing fake videos of politicians saying or doing things that never happened in real life--a scenario that could sow widespread chaos if such videos are not flagged and debunked in time. The thankless task of debunking fake images and videos online has generally fallen upon news reporters, fact-checking websites and some sharp-eyed good Samaritans. But the more recent rise of AI-driven deepfakes that can turn Hollywood celebrities and politicians into digital puppets may require additional fact-checking help from AI-driven detection technologies. An Amsterdam-based startup called Deeptrace Labs aims to become one of the go-to shops for such deepfake detection technologies. "We see deepfakes and similar technologies as a new wave of cybersecurity threats, with the potential of affecting every digital audiovisual communication channel," says Giorgio Patrini, CEO and chief scientist at Deeptrace Labs, a startup based out of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
