Major investment in AI to support UK health service
The plans, for the U.K. National Health Service (NHS), were announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock who indicated that said AI has "enormous power" to improve care, save lives and ensure doctors had more time to spend with patients. Al will be used for a range of activities, from diagnosing patients, gaining new insights into diseases, and for improving how hospitals operate. In doing so, he announced that £250 million ($3 million) will be ring fenced from the health budget for health related artificial intelligence projects. The new AI lab will sit within the new NHS digital health unit, NHSX. Academics, specialists and technology companies will work within the laboratory to develop different strands of health technology.

The National Health Service in England is setting up a research lab to build artificial intelligence that could help treat conditions including cancer, dementia and heart disease, the Department of Health has announced. The AI lab could help tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the NHS, including improving cancer screening, identifying patients most at risk of dementia or heart disease, and automating admin tasks, giving medical professionals more time with patients. The NHS will receive £250 million for the project. "We are on the cusp of a huge health tech revolution that could transform patient experience by making the NHS a truly predictive, preventive and personalised health and care service," says Health Secretary Matt Hancock. Though medical AIs have shown much promise, few have been through rigorous clinical trials to show that they really will improve outcomes for patients.

But Daikin Industries Ltd., the world's biggest maker of air conditioners with a market value of $37 billion, is taking a more unusual route to AI expertise. At a disadvantage to bigger tech firms in attracting top talent, it has created an in-house program that takes new graduates and current employees -- almost all with no AI background -- and trains them up.

Following the horrific mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton over the weekend, President Trump has called on private enterprises, particularly social media companies, to develop new tools for surfacing "red flags" that could help identify violent shooters before they act. Last month's announcement by Amazon that it plans to spend $700 million (£569 million) over six years to retrain a third of its US workforce was eye-catching for many reasons. One was the price tag: even for the world's second most valuable company, spending three-quarters of a billion dollars over half a decade to retrain 100,000 workers is a huge undertaking. Also noteworthy was the firm's reasoning. Amazon explicitly attributed its move to the rise of automation, machine learning and other technology: the so-called fourth industrial revolution. There was a sense that the pioneer of online retailing, famed for its use of automation, was merely an early accepter of an inescapable truth that all employers will soon have to face: that the skills of their existing workforces will no longer have any market value as their old roles are taken by machines and new roles are created. The company reportedly has 20,000 current vacancies. But, for universities, the most conspicuous aspect of the announcement may well have been their omission from it.

Earlier this year the Topol Review of the training needs of the future NHS workforce recommended an increase in the number of clinicians trained to use digital, AI and robotics technologies.
