"When I started writing this book, I just wanted to write a story about defenseless children who were locked up and had to kind of band together in order to fight these cruel adults that are performing tests on them," King said.
Researchers seek to revolutionize catalyst design with machine learning Penn State University
Researchers from Penn State and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have received a $1.2 million grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to use machine learning -- a form of artificial intelligence -- and data science to design more effective catalysts for chemical processing. The grant is part of a new initiative by the DOE to provide $27.6 million in grants for data science research in chemical and materials sciences. A catalyst is a stable chemical substance that, when added to a chemical reaction, increases the rate of reaction without becoming part of the reaction. "It is important to recognize how widespread the use of catalysts is," said Michael Janik, Penn State professor of chemical engineering and principal investigator for the study. "About 90% of chemical products people are using every day, like gasoline and fine chemicals that are in shampoo, are going through some sort of catalytic process before they're used."

In recent years, various governments, international organisations, civil society groups and technology companies have issued documents outlining their principles around the development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Yet, the world appears to be no closer to a universal set of AI norms. This brief suggests a rethinking of how AI norms should be formulated and outlines key lessons. First, technology firms reflect certain human biases that do not do justice to their global consumer base and make them unsuitable to lead the setting of AI principles. Second, while norms are ambiguous by design, the misuse of this ambiguity by actors to justify rights violations sets a dangerous precedent. Third, no single regulation can account for the consequences of the same AI application deployed in different contexts.

Facebook, Microsoft launch contest to detect deepfake videos - Reuters
The social media giant is putting $10 million into the "Deepfake Detection Challenge," which aims to spur detection research. As part of the project, Facebook is commissioning researchers to produce realistic deepfakes to create a data set for testing detection tools. The company said the videos, which will be released in December, will feature paid actors and that no user data would be utilized. In the run-up to the U.S. presidential election in November 2020, social platforms have been under pressure to tackle the threat of deepfakes, which use artificial intelligence to create hyper-realistic videos where a person appears to say or do something they did not. While there has not been a well-crafted deepfake video with major political consequences in the United States, the potential for manipulated video to cause turmoil was recently demonstrated by a "cheapfake" clip of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, manually slowed down to make her speech seem slurred.

So, a few months ago, I was walking down the street in Shenzhen, in the Guangdong Province of southeastern China. I was hungry and looking for lunch. Armed with my credit card and plenty of the local currency, I strode out of my hotel to check out the many street vendors selling delicious-smelling food. Using Google Translate, I was able to order a fried fish dish, but when I went to pay, the vendor refused my credit card. Undaunted I pulled out cash, but that too was refused. The guy pointed me to a large QR code and asked me to pay using the WeChat app. As this was my first day in China, I hadn't yet set the app to pay for things, so I walked away, a little embarrassed. Still hungry, I came to a large junction and saw a promising looking restaurant across a busy street.

Pactum has also filed the patent this week related to its technology IP. Inefficient contracting has been estimated to cause firms to lose between 17% to 40% of the value on a given deal, depending on circumstances, according to research by KPMG. Pactum's AI helps companies improve their bottom line by implementing bespoke negotiation services for large volumes of incremental partners in every market, that might have previously been unmanaged.
Fearing 2020 'deepfakes,' Facebook will launch industry AI 'challenge'
A deepfake video presents a realistic AI-generated image of a real person saying or doing fictional things. Perhaps the most famous such video to date portrayed Barack Obama calling Donald Trump a "dipshit." Facebook is creating a "Deepfake Detection Challenge," which will offer grants and awards in excess of $10 million to people developing promising detection tools. The social network is teaming up with Microsoft and the Partnership on AI (which includes Amazon, Google, DeepMind, and IBM), as well as academics from MIT, Oxford, Cornell Tech, UC Berkeley, and others on the effort. The tech companies will contribute cash and technology and will help with judging detection tools, a Facebook spokesperson told me.
