Artificial Intelligence and Computational Law: Democratizing Cybersecurity Stanford Law School
A few years ago, I was invited to Minnesota Public Radio to speak about various legal issues related to cybersecurity. To my left was Bruce Schneier, a famous and respected cybersecurity researcher and prolific author. There wasn't much disagreement between us during the interview, though I recall emphasizing a bit more the FTC's cybersecurity efforts, noting that I thought they were doing a pretty good job in the current regulatory vacuum, building a de-facto common law as they went along. In his latest book, "Click Here to Kill Everybody," Schneier argues, among other things, that there is a systemic lack of security in all things computer (something he calls "Internet ", essentially an extension of IoT) and that what is needed to fix this is government intervention. Schneier's call for intervention comes in the form of a new government agency, one that has the ability to "coordinate and advise with other agencies" on the Internet .

Air Force boosts funding for digital technology using artificial intelligence for 3D manufacturing
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – 3D manufacturing technology from a Purdue University-affiliated company may soon play an even bigger part in helping the Department of Defense manage its digital assets to protect the United States. Imaginestics LLC, a software company headquartered in the Purdue Research Park of West Lafayette, has received a $1.5 million SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Phase II grant through the U.S. Air Force. The award comes after the company was hired in 2017 to create a new system for the Air Force to better manage additive manufacturing (AM). "Imaginestics' mission is to build artificial intelligence-powered solutions for managing digital assets, which aligns perfectly with the needs of the Air Force," said Jamie Tan, CEO and co-founder of Imaginestics. Jason Mann, additive manufacturing technical lead for the 76th CMXG Reverse Engineering and Critical Tooling (REACT) lab at Tinker Air Force Base, said, "Imaginestics is building an Additive Manufacturing Advisory System (AMAS) that will provide the Air Force with a method of effectively storing, manipulating and presenting AM data in a form useful to AM engineers. It will provide provenance for AM parts, the ability to see trends in AM equipment performance, and manage the workflow for AM and reverse engineering tasks. Hosting the software on the AWS GovCloud will allow other depots to utilize the software to share AM data between all organizations involved in AM, while also supporting downstream processes that go with AM to minimize depot maintenance cost."

Instead of the encroaching privatisation of publicly held data, we should be looking to create a "digital commons" The potential threat to the NHS from a post-Brexit US trade deal is clear, and has become a major election talking point. But alongside the well-known dangers of accelerating privatisation and drug price hikes, there are risks to one of the UK's most prized publicly owned resources.
Artificial Intelligence in 2020
Where have we been, where are we now, and where are we headed? I've written this in first person format so the reader can see it through my eyes from the trenches, including observations, conclusions and questions. In looking back over time, it helps me to revisit milestone articles I've written and read. Although my first published paper on our AI R&D was in 2002, I'll start by looking back at a futuristic scenario on the American healthcare system published in 2010. A decade is a nice round number and was also the same year my old friend and former business partner Russell Borland passed away unexpectedly. Russell was a close friend from the early 1980s on. He was involved with our journey at KYield since inception in the mid 1990s, so losing him was a shock. I emailed the healthcare scenario to Vint Cerf who asked me if he could share it -- the paper was on the web so of course I said yes. The next thing I know enormous numbers of downloads were occurring (don't underestimate Vint's network, or Google's). We stopped counting at several million views from healthcare institutions all over the world, and that's just on our site (others have published the paper on the web without permission).
Peter Thiel to Silicon Valley: 'Unethical' not to help U.S. military compete with China
Billionaire Silicon Valley investor and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel called on American technology companies to step up innovation and resist pressures to reject military partnerships, arguing the U.S. is lagging behind China in the technology race. "The China dynamic has changed things tremendously in the last few years. Meanwhile, China's share of the world R&D spending has increased significantly and today China has a larger share than the U.S. did at the height of the Cold War. Rest assured, Elon--we don't need to fear AI killer robots, at least for the time being. At this juncture, some experts believe artificial intelligence (AI) is the panacea for all of society's woes. Meanwhile, we all know how fearful Tesla CEO Elon Musk is of AI. To paraphrase, Musk has pretty much said that artificial intelligence could possibly result in the end of humanity as we know it. And that would be pretty bad.

Artificial Intelligence: Evolving Risks and Responsibilities
From speech recognition, big data analysis and machine learning to bold new healthcare advances, financial and business advice, talking computers, robots and self-driving cars, the rapid development and adoption of artificial intelligence ("AI") is becoming widespread in more and more areas of daily life. While unleashing opportunities for businesses and communities across the world, AI technologies have also brought about a host of new risks. The implications of AI for companies' legal and ethical responsibilities are now being discussed among governments and a variety of business and non-governmental groups worldwide. A raft of new voluntary ethical codes and even some legislative proposals relating to AI have also started to appear. The trend is that while companies and other organizations that develop, implement or use AI systems are and will be expected to comply with existing data privacy and other legal norms, they will soon have to adhere to a number of new transparency and other ethical expectations as well--the outlines of which are beginning to converge.
