Yann LeCun Quits Twitter Amid Acrimonious Exchanges on AI Bias
This is an updated version. Turing Award Winner and Facebook Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun has announced his exit from popular social networking platform Twitter after getting involved in a long and often acrimonious dispute regarding racial biases in AI. Unlike most other artificial intelligence researchers, LeCun has often aired his political views on social media platforms, and has previously engaged in public feuds with colleagues such as Gary Marcus. This time however LeCun's penchant for debate saw him run afoul of what he termed "the linguistic codes of modern social justice." It all started on June 20 with a tweet regarding the new Duke University PULSE AI photo recreation model that had depixelated a low-resolution input image of Barack Obama into a photo of a white male.

While it is relatively easy to turn a photo into a Picasso-style image using a computer, it is not yet possible to produce a text in a specific individual style, such as that of an author like Franz Kafka. The problem with texts is that the style and the subject matter are not necessarily cognate. A new research project headed up by Dr. Sophie Burkhardt of the Institute of Computer Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) will be looking into exactly this problem. For this, the project "Semantic Disentanglement: Differentiation of Style and Topic in Text Data" will be receiving some EUR 2 million from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The researchers intend to develop models and software with the aim of improving the automatic analysis and generation of good quality texts.

UK's competition regulator demands tougher action on Google and Facebook
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has called on the UK government to create "a new pro-competition regulatory regime" that can control Facebook, Google and other technology companies that are primarily funded by digital advertising. The non-ministerial department has completed a study announced last July and concluded that "existing laws are not suitable for effective regulation." To combat the problem, it's recommending that a new Digital Markets Unit be set up with major oversight and powers. The Unit was first proposed in a report published by the Digital Competition Expert Panel (DCEP) -- a group chaired by Professor Jason Furman, a former chief economist when Barack Obama was president -- in March 2019. The CMA believes it should have a code of conduct that ensures Facebook and Google don't veer into "exploitative or exclusionary practices," or do anything that is likely to reduce public trust and transparency.
Germany calls for tightened AI regulation at EU level
Four months after the European Commission presented its'white paper' on Artificial Intelligence (AI), the German government said it broadly agrees with Brussels but sees a need to tighten up on security. The government is particularly concerned by the fact that only AI applications with "high risk" have to meet special requirements. According to the European Commission's'white paper', there are two criteria for AI applications with "high risk". First, they are to be used in sensitive sectors, such as health, security, or justice, and second, their concrete application should also be associated with special risks, such as discrimination, injury, or danger to life. If an AI application fulfills both criteria, it must also meet special requirements, for example with regard to data retention or human supervision.
China and AI: what the world can learn and what it should be wary of
China announced in 2017 its ambition to become the world leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030. While the US still leads in absolute terms, China appears to be making more rapid progress than either the US or the EU, and central and local government spending on AI in China is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars. The move has led โ at least in the West โ to warnings of a global AI arms race and concerns about the growing reach of China's authoritarian surveillance state. But treating China as a "villain" in this way is both overly simplistic and potentially costly. While there are undoubtedly aspects of the Chinese government's approach to AI that are highly concerning and rightly should be condemned, it's important that this does not cloud all analysis of China's AI innovation.
UNPREPARED FOR THE DEEPFAKE?
Individuals, businesses, and governments are unprepared for the coming wave of deepfake attacks by malicious cyber criminals. For the unaware, "deepfake" refers to artificial intelligence generated false media that pretends to be the authentic version of what it emulates. In Englishโฆit is fake pictures, videos, and audio of real people or the creation of fake people in the same mediums. Commanding several of the seven traditional patterns of artificial intelligence, deepfakes use algorithms that mimic voice, mannerisms, facial expressions, body language, and lip movements to look deceptively real; creating audio and video clips of events that never occurred. These images are spread on social media and in the news, as most viewers are totally unaware of the lack of authenticity.
