England ditches its shitty exam result algorithm after it penalized poorer students
English school-leaving exam results will now be based on teacher assessments after the government scrapped a controversial algorithm that downgraded nearly 40% of predicted grades. The U-turn came after evidence emerged that students from fee-paying schools had disproportionately benefited from the algorithm, which used a formula based on a school's historical results and each pupil's attainment. In response, the government said students could appeal the results or resit exams in the fall. But a wave of student protests and a backlash from Conservative MPs have convinced the government to revert to center-assessed grades for both A-levels and GCSEs, the exams taken by 18 and 16โyear-old students respectively. However, students who had their results marked up by the algorithm can keep the higher grade.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a $6 million contract for the Competency Aware Machine Learning (CAML) program to Raytheon, the company announced on Monday. The contract is to facilitate communication conditions where machine learning systems from CAML can communicate to human operators what they have learned about a situation, under what conditions the machines absorbed information the best, and the situations when the learned strategies are most appropriate. This could address the problem of Machine Learning systems needing human decision assistance in combat situations. "The CAML system turns tools into partnersโฆOnce the system has developed these skills, the team will apply it to a simulated search and rescue mission. Users will create the conditions surrounding the mission, while the system will make recommendations and give users information about its competence in those particular conditions," said Ilana Heintz, principal investigator for CAML at Raytheon BBN Technologies.
Microsoft, Energy Department to Develop Disaster-Response AI Tools
