Nym Health raises $16.5 million for its auditable machine learning tools for automating hospital billing

#artificialintelligence

A little less than two years after raising its seed round, the Israeli-based Nym Health has added another $16.5 million to its cash haul so it can roll out its technology developing auditable machine learning tools for automating hospital billing. The new financing came from investors including GV (the investment arm of Google previously known as Google Ventures) and will be used by the company to expand its technology development and sales and marketing efforts across the U.S. Billing has been a huge problem for healthcare systems in the U.S., thanks to complicated coding that needs to be entered to ensure insurance providers pay for the services medical professionals give to patients. Nym claims to have solved the problem by developing technologies that can convert medical charts and electronic medical records from physician's consultations into proper billing codes automatically. The company uses natural language processing and taxonomies that were specifically developed to understand clinical language to determine the optimal charge for each procedure, examination and diagnostic conducted for a patient, according to Nym. The company was founded in 2018 by two former members of Israel's 8200 cybersecurity unit of the army.

AI-powered cyber attack mitigation contract won by Parsons - Military Embedded Systems

#artificialintelligence

Parsons Corporation was awarded the SharkSeer 2.0 task order under the Defense Information Systems Agency's (DISA) Systems Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI) contract. The firm-fixed price contract includes one base year and four option years, which, if exercised, will provide for a total potential value of $28 million. According to contracting officials, SharkSeer 2.0 is a new requirement for DISA and will aim to enhance the program's original operational capability with revamped architecture and new task requirements. The effort is intended to support an enterprise boundary defense system that uses artificial intelligence to identify and mitigate zero-day cyber attacks and advanced persistent threats to protect Department of Defense (DoD) networks. The company claims that Parsons scope for the base year and the options years, if exercised, will include migration, integration, testing, operations and maintenance, streamlining, optimization, enhancement, and simplification of all SharkSeer functionalities across seven operational boundaries.

Nest's new thermostat has a Soli gesture sensor built in

#artificialintelligence

Nest today introduced a new, more affordable thermostat to its lineup of smart home devices. Simply called the Nest Thermostat, it starts at $129 -- significantly cheaper than the $250 current-gen Nest Thermostat -- and leverages Google's Soli technology to recognize gestures behind its mirror-like display. The new Nest Thermostat comes at a time when many consumers are looking to use less energy in their homes, both because they want to save money and because they wish to take steps that help the environment. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, in April, spending plunged more than 13% -- the steepest drop since the government began to keep records nearly 60 years ago. And in a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 63% of Americans said stricter environmental regulations are worth the cost that they would make sacrifices to comply with them.

In a Battle of AI Versus AI, Researchers Are Preparing for the Coming Wave of Deepfake Propaganda

#artificialintelligence

An investigative journalist receives a video from an anonymous whistleblower. It shows a candidate for president admitting to illegal activity. But is this video real? If so, it would be huge news – the scoop of a lifetime – and could completely turn around the upcoming elections. But the journalist runs the video through a specialized tool, which tells her that the video isn't what it seems.

Japan considered drone fighters under ex-defense chief Taro Kono

The Japan Times

The introduction of unmanned fighter jets has been considered to succeed the Air Self-Defense Force's aging F-2s, which are expected to start being retired within two decades, as part of efforts to reduce development costs, according to government officials. The proposal was made earlier this year by Taro Kono, who was defense chief until last month before he became administrative reform minister in new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's Cabinet. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said discussions in the Defense Ministry were, however, suspended in the wake of the government's decision in June to scrap its plan to deploy the U.S.-developed Aegis Ashore land-based defense system, designed to counter missile threats from North Korea. Japan plans to start work on a new fighter jet in fiscal 2024 together with U.S. or British companies, and aims to introduce it in fiscal 2035 when the current F-2s are scheduled to start being retired. The ministry estimates that at least ¥1.2 trillion is needed to develop a manned fighter jet, while a drone -- which has no space for a pilot and requires no safety equipment -- costs much less to build.

UK and US enter special deal to develop Artificial Intelligence and thwart China – IAM Network

#artificialintelligence

The UK ranks second only to America in the new technology, says Oxford Insight's AI Readiness Index, although China may have already pushed us into third. AI is already widely used in Britain for such processes as online banking and is providing the backbone for Covid research. In May Britain was the first country to contribute a supercomputer to the Covid-19 High Performance Computing Consortium. The group runs calculations in epidemiology, bioinformatics and molecular modelling to discover new treatments and a vaccine. However, the new US-UK partnership – which stemmed from a meeting between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US president Donald Trump – was also prompted by fears that China may be on the track to become an AI superpower. In 2017 China's state council announced itsAI development plan which aims to connect and upgrade all industry within just five years, as part of a "Made in China 2025" push.Under the plan, AI will be used to control firms to balance supply and demand, while the technology will also be used to keep tabs on the population.Announcing the partnership, US chief technology officer Michael Kratsios said: "America and our allies must lead the world in shaping the development of …
