A level results: Why algorithms aren't making the grade
When the UK government decided to cancel school exams due to the coronavirus pandemic, they gave examination regulators Ofqual a challenge: allocate grades to students anyway, and make sure the grades given out this year are equivalent in standard to previous years. Ofqual's solution was to create an algorithm – a computer program designed to predict what grades the students would have received if they had taken exams. Unfortunately, when the computer-generated grades were issued, 40 per cent of A-Level students got lower grades than their teachers had predicted. Promised university places were withdrawn. Lawyers offered to take legal action against Ofqual.

Japan to build first-ever checkup system with AI and advanced data storage
A Japanese government-funded project to develop the world's first predictive maintenance system for industrial plants will employ artificial intelligence and advanced technology to store data in a secure and user-centric way. The IOTA Foundation, a German-based nonprofit organization behind the technology, said it has been chosen as a partner in the project funded by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, a national research and development agency operating under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The project, which seeks to strengthen the durability of critical infrastructure, will optimize facility management systems deployed in power, industrial, petrochemicals and oil refining plants throughout Japan by digitizing maintenance data and using artificial intelligence to predict when checkups are needed, according to the foundation. Data for plants across Japan is currently stored manually, causing issues with integrity and sharing capability, it said. The project aims to shift data to a decentralized database using IOTA's distributed ledger service called the Tangle, while AI systems are expected to replace engineers amid Japan's shrinking labor force.

AI talent appears open to working on defense -- with caveats
A new survey offers some evidence that most artificial intelligence experts are positive or neutral when it comes to working with the Pentagon on AI-enabled projects. Why it matters: Employee concerns have led some tech companies to pull back from working on defense-related projects in the past, but for many in the AI world, the chance to work on intellectually challenging projects -- and the Pentagon's not insignificant budget -- seems too good to pass up. What's happening: In a report released earlier this week -- with the memorable title "'Cool Projects' or'Expanding the Efficiency of the Murderous American War Machine?'" -- researchers at CSET surveyed 160 AI professionals about their attitudes toward working on DoD projects. Russia's mega artificial intelligence event in December; major participation from India
New Delhi: Russia will host its mega "artificial intelligence journey" event in December virtually and the event will see major participation from India. A record-high number of Indian participants and many Indian origin keynote speakers are set to speak at the event to be held from December 3-5. Anima Anandkumar from California Institute of Technology, Pradeep Dubey of Intel, Gurdeep Singh of Microsoft are among the speakers at the event. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at the same meet in 2019. The event is sponsored by Sberbank, Russia's state-owned bank and one of the largest banks in the country and central and Eastern European region.
Measuring agreement on linguistic expressions in medical treatment scenarios

Quality of life assessment represents a key process of deciding treatment success and viability. As such, patients' perceptions of their functional status and well-being are important inputs for impairment assessment. Given that patient completed questionnaires are often used to assess patient status and determine future treatment options, it is important to know the level of agreement of the words used by patients and different groups of medical professionals. In this paper, we propose a measure called the Agreement Ratio which provides a ratio of overall agreement when modelling words through Fuzzy Sets (FSs). The measure has been specifically designed for assessing this agreement in fuzzy sets which are generated from data such as patient responses. The measure relies on using the Jaccard Similarity Measure for comparing the different levels of agreement in the FSs generated.
