The Future is Digital Healthcare
Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the use of digital technology in healthcare was on a steady rise; however, the pandemic has spurred rapid development of digital health technology as well as rapid adoption and utilization of that technology in the industry. Digital health holds the promise of increased accessibility to high-quality, patient-centered care that can also increase patient engagement and reduce costs. However, the full realization of this promise may be threatened by policy and regulation that is failing to keep pace with and encourage this evolution. There is no universally accepted definition of digital health. In fact, researchers studying the definition recently came across no fewer than 95 published definitions for the concept of digital health.1 There were, however, some clear patterns: there is an emphasis on how data is used to improve care; there is a focus on the provision of healthcare, rather than the use of technology; and the definitions tend to highlight the well-being of people and populations over the caring of patients with diseases. As used in this article, digital health encompasses the use of digital tools and technologies to improve and manage an individual's or a population's health and wellness.
People are using AI to generate...interesting short stories
We recently featured the brilliant Nichesss, an AI tool that can be used to generate content and ideas. As is often the case with new tools a Facebook group has been set up and recently users have posted some interesting results using the toolโฆAI written short stories! I'll get on to how in a moment, let's just take a moment to check out some examples. As the cradle rocked, and the fire crackled, and the kitten snoozed, a robot appeared at the door of the cottage. It was battered, dented and dirty.
Artificial Intelligence, IoT Sensors tech, Aboard NASA's Perseverance Rover
Last Thursday, NASA's Perseverance rover grabbed headlines all around the world, with its historic landing on the Martian surface. The rover, which was launched July 30, 2020, from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida atop a ULA Atlas 541 rocket, finally made touched down at 3.44pm ET (8.44pm GMT). The mission objective is to search for signs of ancient life and to collect rock and soil samples for possible return to Earth โ where it will be scanned for presence of microbial life. The name Perseverance was given by Alex Mather, who won a K-12 public naming contest with 28,000 entries. Named after the human characteristic, the mission follows similar name-scheme of its predecessors: Curiosity, Spirit and Opportunity. The rover made a touch down at an ancient river delta site in Jezero Crater.
World's first space HOTEL to begin construction in Earth orbit in 2025
Work is due to start on the world's first'space hotel' in low Earth orbit in 2025 - and it will come equipped with restaurants, a cinema, spa and rooms for 400 people. Developed by the Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), the Voyager Station could be operational as early as 2027, with the infrastructure built in orbit around the Earth. The space station will be a large circle and rotate to generate artificial gravity that will be set at a similar level to the gravity found on the surface of the Moon. Voyager Station's hotel will include many of the features you might expect from a cruise ship, including themed restaurants, a health spa and a cinema. It will feature a series of pods attached to the outside of the rotating ring and some of these pods could be sold to the likes of NASA and ESA for space research.
Deep Nostalgia: 'creepy' new service uses AI to animate old family photos
Deep Nostalgia, a new service from the genealogy site MyHeritage that animates old family photos, has gone viral on social media, in another example of how AI-based image manipulation is becoming increasingly mainstream. Launched in late February, the service uses an AI technique called deep learning to automatically animate faces in photos uploaded to the system. Because of its ease of use, and free trial, it soon took off on Twitter, where users uploading animated versions of old family photos, celebrity pictures, and even drawings and illustrations. Artificial Intelligence Begins to Realize Its Potential
In my previous column, I looked at the problem of artificial intelligences forcing hardware to consume too much power, which could lead to an unsustainable spike in demand at data centers in this country by 2025. To test out their appetites for more power, I employed several advanced artificial intelligences, and also their close cousins machine learning, cognitive computing, deep learning and advanced expert system technology. For that column, I only measured how much power they consumed, but my original intention was to actually test them out to show some innovative things the technology was accomplishing. I am circling back to that effort now. For many years we have been reporting on the technology of artificial intelligence, about how it's being built out and made more efficient, or how it can be paired with other technologies like quantum computing to become even more accurate.
