The DoD fund AI to track authoritarian government censorship

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced substantial funding for a project it hopes will help to develop AI technologies capable of automatically analyzing how authoritarian regimes prevent the free flow of information online. Control over the internet has been a primary method for the restriction of information for many years now. It is exploited in diverse territories around the world to help spread propaganda and to prevent the dissemination of dissenting political opinions. This allows totalitarian regimes to maintain a stranglehold over the populace โ€“ particularly in and around election times. Now, the principal US agency charged with developing technologies for the military is asking for detailed submissions for research concepts funded by its Artificial Intelligence Exploration (AIE) branch.


China using artificial intelligence to detect UFOs because it can 'think outside the box'

The Chinese military are using artificial intelligence to track unidentified flying objects. Human analysis in the country have apparently been overwhelmed in recent years by the high number of sightings from the military and civilians, according to Chen Li from the Air Force Early Warning Academy, as reported by the South China Morning Post. "The frequent occurrence of unidentified air conditions in recent years โ€ฆ brings severe challenges to air defence security of our country," Chen wrote in a 2019 report to Beijing scientists. The organisation is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence because it can "think outside the box", Chen reportedly stated, meaning that it can link information from different times and locations in a way the human brain cannot. The Independent has contacted the Chinese embassy for more information.

IITR establishes a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

Since graduating from a US university four years ago, Kevin Carballo has lost count of the number of times he has applied for a job only to receive a swift, automated rejection email - sometimes just hours after applying. Like many job seekers around the world, Mr Carballo's applications are increasingly being screened by algorithms built to automatically flag attractive applicants to hiring managers. "There's no way to apply for a job these days without being analysed by some sort of automated system," said Mr Carballo, 27, who is latino and the first member of his family to go to university. "It feels like shooting in the dark while being blindfolded - there's just no way for me to tell my full story when a machine is assessing me," Mr Carballo, who hoped to get work experience at a law firm before applying to law school, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone. From Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs that assess an applicant's facial expressions during a video interview, to resume screening platforms predicting job performance, the AI recruitment industry is valued at more than $500 million (ยฃ350 million).


FDA greenlights Cognoa's tool to detect autism spectrum disorder in kids

Pediatric behavioral health company Cognoa has received FDA De Novo classification for its autism spectrum disorder (ASD) software diagnostic aid, Canvas Dx. The ASD diagnostic tool is designed to help primary care clinicians and pediatricians evaluate and diagnose suspected cases of autism among children. It uses machine learning algorithms to analyze videos of the child's behavior and responses to questions uploaded by parents and caregivers to devise a diagnosis. Canvas Dx is indicated as an aid in the diagnosis of ASD in patients between the ages 18 months and 5 years old who are at risk of developmental delay based on concerns of a parent, caregiver or healthcare provider. It is not intended to be used as a standalone diagnostic device.


That AI scanning your X-ray for signs of COVID-19 may just be looking at your age

Academics at the University of Washington found that algorithms trained to diagnose COVID-19 from chest X-rays often look at secondary features, such as a patient's age, rather than focusing on the images themselves โ€“ something known as shortcut learning. "A physician would generally expect a finding of COVID-19 from an X-ray to be based on specific patterns in the image that reflect disease processes," said Alex DeGrave, a medical science student at the American university and co-author of a paper published this week in Nature Intelligence. "But, rather than relying on those patterns, a system using shortcut learning might, for example, judge that someone is elderly and, thus, infer that they are more likely to have the disease because it is more common in older patients. The shortcut is not wrong per se, but the association is unexpected and not transparent. And, that could lead to an inappropriate diagnosis."

This first blog post will focus on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) evolved throughout the years, I will mention and describe some of the milestones of this evolution and analyse how it became part of our lives and how it will become even more important in the future. Digital technology has been one of the fastest-growing tech in the history of mankind, today our phones have hundreds of GB of storage and process data faster than a computer would a few decades ago, the only other branches of technology that have developed this quickly are weapons. It is not rare to hear how computers were'as big as a room' but one of the most interesting examples of the leap of digital technology, specifically information technology, dates back to 1969 when a computer with only 14kb of ram steered and landed the Saturn V and its human hosts on the moon. To put that into perspective, the blog that I am now writing will occupy more than 14kb of space in my storage, nowadays, we are used of talking about Megabytes or Gigabytes, or even Terabytes. Using kilobytes for everyday use would be like weighing a person in grams.
