Marginalising over Stationary Kernels with Bayesian Quadrature

Marginalising over families of Gaussian Process kernels produces flexible model classes with well-calibrated uncertainty estimates. Existing approaches require likelihood evaluations of many kernels, rendering them prohibitively expensive for larger datasets. We propose a Bayesian Quadrature scheme to make this marginalisation more efficient and thereby more practical. Through use of the maximum mean discrepancies between distributions, we define a kernel over kernels that captures invariances between Spectral Mixture (SM) Kernels. Kernel samples are selected by generalising an information-theoretic acquisition function for warped Bayesian Quadrature. We show that our framework achieves more accurate predictions with better calibrated uncertainty than state-of-the-art baselines, especially when given limited (wall-clock) time budgets.

If you use such social media websites as Facebook and Twitter, you may have come across posts flagged with warnings about misinformation. So far, most misinformation โ€“ flagged and unflagged โ€“ has been aimed at the general public. Imagine the possibility of misinformation โ€“ information that is false or misleading โ€“ in scientific and technical fields like cybersecurity, public safety and medicine. There is growing concern about misinformation spreading in these critical fields as a result of common biases and practices in publishing scientific literature, even in peer-reviewed research papers. As a graduate student and as faculty members doing research in cybersecurity, we studied a new avenue of misinformation in the scientific community.


New ID crime chatbot could have future B2B cyber applications

A new AI-based chatbot tool used to help identity crime victims seek after-hours help was also designed with future B2B applications in mind, including helping employees report a cyberattack when the IT or security team is unavailable. This chatbot helper is a new service currently undergoing beta testing by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), leveraging technology developed by its partner SAS Institute. Thanks to ViViAN, individuals do not have to wait until normal ITRC business hours in order to report an incident; rather, they can lodge their complaints with the chatbot and receive reassurance and guidance on the immediate next steps they should take. All communications with ViViAN are then later followed up by a live agent when one becomes available. But at least this way, victims are able to act swiftly when their data is at stake and time is of the essence.


How stakeholder capitalism and AI ethics go hand in hand

At a 2020 meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Salesforce founder Marc Benioff declared that "capitalism as we have known it is dead." In its place now is stakeholder capitalism, a form of capitalism that has been spearheaded by Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, over the past 50 years. As Benioff put it, stakeholder capitalism is "a more fair, a more just, a more equitable, a more sustainable way of doing business that values all stakeholders, as well as all shareholders." Unlike shareholder capitalism, which is measured primarily by the monetary profit generated for a business' shareholders alone, stakeholder capitalism requires that business activity should benefit all stakeholders associated with the business. These stakeholders can include the shareholders, the employees, the customers, the local community, the environment, etc.

How artificial intelligence is changing the future of air transportation

A George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science professor is working on an interdisciplinary research project funded by NASA that aims to design and develop a safety management system for electric autonomous aircraft. Peng Wei, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, researches control, optimization, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in air transportation and aviation. His lab builds flight deck and ground-based automation and decision support tools to improve and ensure safety for emerging aircraft types and flight operations. While a lot of the innovation in AI and machine learning applications has been focused on revolutionizing the internet and digital connectivity, Dr. Wei is part of a group of researchers focused on expanding those benefits into transforming air transportation for physical connectivity and future mobility. Dr. Wei is the principal investigator of a new three-year, $2.5 million NASA System-Wide Safety grant project.


The Biden Administration Launches the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force

Today, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced the newly formed National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Resource Task Force which will write the road map for expanding access to critical resources and educational tools that will spur AI innovation and economic prosperity nationwide. As directed by Congress in the National AI Initiative Act of 2020, the Task Force will serve as a Federal advisory committee to help create and implement a blueprint for the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) -- a shared research infrastructure providing AI researchers and students across all scientific disciplines with access to computational resources, high-quality data, educational tools, and user support. The Task Force will provide recommendations for establishing and sustaining the NAIRR, including technical capabilities, governance, administration, and assessment, as well as requirements for security, privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties. The Task Force will submit two reports to Congress that together will present a comprehensive strategy and implementation plan -- an interim report in May 2022 and final report in November 2022. "America's economic prosperity hinges on foundational investments in our technological leadership," said Science Advisor to the President and OSTP Director Eric Lander.
