Robotic Assistance Devices Names Jeffrey Slotnick as Chairman of Board of Advisors

Russian cargo ship will narrowly avoid a collision with a SpaceX Starlink satellite tonight

A Russian cargo ship on its way to the International Space Station (ISS) will come perilously close to colliding with one of SpaceX's satellites, according to the country's space agency Roscosmos. The Progress 78 spacecraft, which blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Tuesday, will also narrowly miss a Falcon 9 rocket fragment left in orbit from 2020. Preliminary calculations suggest the Starlink 1691 satellite will come within 0.9 miles (1.5km) of hitting Progress at 17:32 ET (22:32 BST) tonight, while the booster is expected to miss by 0.3 miles (500m) three minutes later. Near-miss: Russian cargo ship Progress 78 (similar to the one pictured) will come very close to colliding with one of SpaceX's satellites, according to the country's space agency Roscosmos Starlink 1691 was launched in September last year but is understood to have been lowered out of operational orbit at 340 miles in April. Roscosmos said: 'Preliminary data show the Starlink 1691 satellite approach the Progress MS-17 spacecraft at 21:32 UTC at a distance of about 1.5 km.

Artificial Intelligence Company Helps IVF Patients Get Pregnant

An Australian Femtech company with US headquarters in San Francisco announced new technology to help couples get pregnant via artificial intelligence-assisted in vitro fertilization (IVF). Life Whisperer is the fertility arm of Presagen, a global artificial intelligence company. The company, whose US headquarters is in San Francisco, announced in a press release new women's health technology applying artificial intelligence to the IVF embryo selection process. IVF clinics around the world can add an artificial intelligence platform to help doctors select the healthiest embryos with the best chance of success. Embryo selection is an important part of the IVF process, where the healthiest embryos are chosen for implantation.

Watchdog: 10 Government Agencies Deployed Clearview AI Facial Recognition Tech

Multiple federal agencies that employ law enforcement personnel used facial recognition technology designed and owned by non-government entities in recent years--and 10 deployed systems made by the controversial company, Clearview AI. In a 92-page report addressed to Congress and publicly released Tuesday, the Government Accountability Office offers details on a range of government implementations of the biometric technology. GAO Director for Homeland Security and Justice Gretta Goodwin confirmed that Reps. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., and Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Chris Coons, D-Del., Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Ron Wyden D-Ore., asked GAO to steer the study. "A goal of this project was to provide the'lay of the land' in terms of federal law enforcement's use of facial recognition technology," she told Nextgov Tuesday.


The Spotlight: A General Method for Discovering Systematic Errors in Deep Learning Models

Supervised learning models often make systematic errors on rare subsets of the data. However, such systematic errors can be difficult to identify, as model performance can only be broken down across sensitive groups when these groups are known and explicitly labelled. This paper introduces a method for discovering systematic errors, which we call the spotlight. The key idea is that similar inputs tend to have similar representations in the final hidden layer of a neural network. We leverage this structure by "shining a spotlight" on this representation space to find contiguous regions where the model performs poorly. We show that the spotlight surfaces semantically meaningful areas of weakness in a wide variety of model architectures, including image classifiers, language models, and recommender systems.
