Adding Emotional Intelligence to AI can Boost Results - EnterpriseTalk

#artificialintelligence

While many companies are attempting to develop AI for various applications, there is a considerable gap between the goals that organizations want to achieve and the reality of the insights that data and programs provide. The ambitions of an organization for using artificial intelligence (AI) and the reality of how such projects play out are vastly different. Emotional intelligence and mindfulness are two essential aspects. The pandemic highlighted this flaw – people's capacity to stay focused and mindful can be compromised in a remote working environment. When AI is utilized in a cyber-attack, such as when someone tries to deploy a chatbot or another adversarial machine learning technology against organizations, this could be a significant issue.

WSU to lead national AI research institute for agriculture

#artificialintelligence

The new institute is one of 11 launched by the National Science Foundation and among two funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture-National Institute of Food and Agriculture in 2021. It's called the AgAID Institute, which is short for USDA-NIFA Institute for Agricultural AI for Transforming Workforce and Decision Support. While traditional AI development involves scientists making tools and delivering them to end-users, the AgAID Institute will involve the people who will use the AI solutions--from farmers and workers to policy makers--in their development, said Ananth Kalyanaraman, a WSU computer science professor and the lead principal investigator for the Institute. "People are very much part of the agricultural ecosystem. Humans manipulate crops on a daily basis and make complex decisions, such as how to allocate water or mitigate the effects of an incoming storm," said Kalyanaraman, who also holds the Boeing Chair in WSU's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Becoming Human: AI Progress

#artificialintelligence

People can acquire and apply general knowledge to solve problems in a wide range of subject areas. Some of them are absorbed by all people, such as walking and talking. Over the past five years, AI has made a huge impact. Not a day goes by without media coverage of AI applications, and start-up activity skyrocketing and new ventures thriving in the field. For example, according to this report, AI companies increased their activity by 72% in 2018 compared to 2017.

AI Gives 'Days of Advanced' Warning in Recent NORTHCOM Networked Warfare Experiment

#artificialintelligence

Using artificial intelligence for rapid data collection and integration of shrunk the commander's decision cycle from days to minutes in some instances in a recent information experiment by U.S. Northern Command, the head of NORTHCOM said Wednesday. Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, Gen. Glen VanHerck said the Global Information Dominance Exercise or GIDE, "focused a lot on contested logistics to give us a scenario where maybe a line of communication such as the Panama Canal may be challenged," by a peer competitor such as China or Russia. The experiment wrapped up during the second week of July. The experiment was hosted by NORTHCOM but included 11 combatant commands, which illustrated how they can integrate and act on data from satellites, planes, and other sources. It also tested the command's ability to use new artificial intelligence abilities to monitor and predict potential threats using those data sources.

Big tech triest to derail EU AI policy with 'warnings' from US think tank

#artificialintelligence

EU policymakers recently proposed a sweeping set of regulations called the Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA). If made law, the AIA would offer European citizens the strictest, most comprehensive protections against predatory AI systems on the planet. And big tech is terrified. Up front: The Center for Data Innovation published a report on Sunday titled "How Much Will the AIA Cost Europe?" Attend the tech festival of the year and get your super early bird ticket now!

NCSU, UNC create artificial intelligence institute with $20M federal grant

#artificialintelligence

CHAPEL HILL – UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State are launching an initiative aiming to utilize artificial intelligence as an educational tool with $20 million in funding from the National Science Foundation. The Artificial Intelligence Institute for Engaged Learning was announced Thursday. The grant covers five years. Other partners include Indiana University and Vanderbilt University as well as Digital Promise, a non-profit. Here's how UNC says the institute will work: "The new institute will create a virtual environment with AI characters and analytical tools for educators to help foster a creative and communicative learning environment for students. Researchers will design a story-based environment where students can interact with engaging AI characters that communicate with speech, facial expression, posture and more. The analytical tools will allow educators to customize scenarios as needed, making a more tailored approach to individual students and their learning style and capability. All these educational AI tools will be informed by ethical considerations of fairness, accountability, transparency, trust and privacy."
