Challenges of Artificial Intelligence -- From Machine Learning and Computer Vision to Emotional Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a part of everyday conversation and our lives. It is considered as the new electricity that is revolutionizing the world. AI is heavily invested in both industry and academy. However, there is also a lot of hype in the current AI debate. AI based on so-called deep learning has achieved impressive results in many problems, but its limits are already visible. AI has been under research since the 1940s, and the industry has seen many ups and downs due to over-expectations and related disappointments that have followed. The purpose of this book is to give a realistic picture of AI, its history, its potential and limitations. We believe that AI is a helper, not a ruler of humans. We begin by describing what AI is and how it has evolved over the decades. After fundamentals, we explain the importance of massive data for the current mainstream of artificial intelligence. The most common representations for AI, methods, and machine learning are covered. In addition, the main application areas are introduced. Computer vision has been central to the development of AI. The book provides a general introduction to computer vision, and includes an exposure to the results and applications of our own research. Emotions are central to human intelligence, but little use has been made in AI. We present the basics of emotional intelligence and our own research on the topic. We discuss super-intelligence that transcends human understanding, explaining why such achievement seems impossible on the basis of present knowledge,and how AI could be improved. Finally, a summary is made of the current state of AI and what to do in the future. In the appendix, we look at the development of AI education, especially from the perspective of contents at our own university.

Goldfish are trained to 'drive' a robotic tank by scientists

In one of the weirdest scientific experiments yet, goldfish have been trained to'drive' a robotic tank around a room. Scientists in Israel constructed a'fish operated vehicle' consisting of a water-filled tank, a camera and a computer on top of a set of wheels. In tests, the onboard camera and computer were able to detect the fish's position in real time and activate the vehicle motors to move the vehicle in the same direction. Six goldfish were successfully trained to use the bizarre device and managed to find their way around the small room towards a food reward. The results suggest that fish can adjust their navigation skills'to a wholly different terrestrial environment', according to the researchers.

The 17-month delay between a search warrant that secured longtime CNN producer John Griffin's devices in Vermont and an arrest on child trafficking charges shows that feds "don't give a damn about these kind of cases," according to a former FBI agent turned whistleblower who has taken the bureau to task for years. "He obviously is a sexual predator, and has gone from grooming children into actually'capturing' them," said Jane Turner, a former FBI special agent who blew the whistle on the FBI's mishandling of child sex crime cases in North Dakota's Native American reservations. The evidence against Griffin allegedly includes drone video he took showing a "completely naked 9-year-old girl" standing next to him in his underwear, according to court filings.

But first, we humans must learn how to avoid the risks inherent in these machines. Deployed intelligently, ML could dramatically improve the efficiency of civil service business processes, the quality of decision-making, and the government's ability to tackle threats such as COVID-19. And in an era of rapid, disruptive change and fast-rising public expectations, it's more important than ever that public services meet citizens' needs. Poorly designed ML systems could lead to discriminatory outcomes, weaken case management and regulatory frameworks, infringe on citizens' data rights, and undermine accountability and transparency.

Drone attack on Iraq base foiled, 2nd one in 24 hours: Coalition

For the second time in 24 hours, a United States-led coalition fighting ISIL (ISIS) in Iraq says it has foiled a drone attack on a base hosting US troops. An official of the international military coalition said on Tuesday two armed drones were shot down as they approached the base in western Anbar province. "Two fixed-wing drones rigged with explosives were engaged and destroyed by defensive capabilities at the Iraqi Ain al-Asad airbase early this morning," the official was quoted as saying by news agencies. "The attempted attack was unsuccessful. All forces are accounted for."


China calls on nuclear-armed nations to focus on AI, space

Beijing is calling on the world's nuclear powers to expand discussions on global security to include emerging threats, following a rare multilateral pledge to temper the risks of nuclear war. Fu Cong, director-general of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Arms Control Department, told reporters in Beijing on Tuesday that the so-called P5 nations -- China, France, Russia, the U.S. and U.K. -- should talk "more directly" about global security. "Strategic stability goes beyond nuclear," he said. "Our idea is to expand the subject of the P5 process so we could discuss not only the nuclear issues, but also other issues related to strategic stability, including outer space, missile defense, even AI and other emerging technologies." The briefing took place after the five nations -- all permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- issued a joint statement Monday pledging to dial back the risk of a nuclear conflict.
