A New AI Lexicon: C is for Consent

The collection of vast amounts of data is necessary to the functioning of AI and machine learning based systems. Where that data is personal data, the idea of consent, informed consent, and the redundancy of consent have become a part of debates on technology and rights. Governments across the world are looking to the potential of AI to open new markets and drive economic growth. In 2018, the Government of India, through Niti Aayog (formerly the Planning Commission), released a discussion paper titled'National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence.' This document stated that "for accelerated adoption of a highly collaborative technology like AI, the government has to play the critical role of a catalyst in supporting partnerships, providing access to infrastructure, fostering innovation through research and creating the demand by seeking solutions for addressing various governmental needs."


New AI-Powered Data Analysis Tool - Defense Advancement

Systematic has developed a new AI-powered data analysis tool designed to transform data collection and management, providing commanders with an advanced data capture and analysis capability. SitaWare Insight decision support tool builds upon the successful SitaWare Headquarters C4I system. The new product enhances users' Intelligence Requirements Management (IRM) and Collection Management (CM) capabilities, making it easy to store and retrieve information from multiple sources. Henrik Sommer, SitaWare Insight product manager and domain expert, said, "SitaWare Insight exploits the'data lakes' that militaries control, formed from sensor information, images, videos, documents and more. The solution provides a secure, scalable repository for this information and an AI-powered search function, allowing users to pinpoint data on everything from enemy positions, images, documents to equipment. "It's like a military version of a commercial search engine, allowing access to the information you need, when you need it." It significantly enhances Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB), offering advanced decision support through data collection, storage, and analysis. For example, operators could use SitaWare Insight to retrieve information on a particular geographical area, then combine this with the mapping capabilities of SitaWare Headquarters to significantly increase situational awareness and provide users with a range of useful data. Sommer points to Automatic Identification System (AIS) data in the naval domain, where SitaWare Insight can help identify patterns within such information: "SitaWare Insight AI can learn what is normal pattern of life in a certain area and then automatically detect and flag anomalies." SitaWare Insight is further enhanced through advanced image and object recognition technology. As such, it can be trained to identify different military objects like vehicles or equipment, tagging these with the appropriate metadata and storing them in the data lake for future access. "This means that later on, you can search for a specific vehicle type, a general topic, or information on a specific area," Sommer explained, adding that it also provides Natural Language Processing technology. "It can read a document of 100 pages or more then produce a one-page summary of key take aways." SitaWare Insight offers a scalable, future-proof solution through its underlying cloud-native architecture, which ensures security and the correct handling and management of data. It enables users to share data on a need-to-know basis and at different classification levels, defining specific user groups to manage access. SitaWare Insight is a significant enabler for the intelligence branch, operational planners, and the soldier on the ground, providing them with a holistic view of the battlefield. "Operational planners are fully dependant on information from the intelligence community.

The company is showcasing a life-size replica of its Dream Chaser spaceplane that will one day take people and cargo to low Earth-orbit. Sierra Space may be a newcomer to the space industry, but the company has secured a deal with NASA for unmanned flights to the International Space Station (ISS) starting this year. And it is working with Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin to develop a commercial off-Earth outpost called Orbital Reef.

2021 Year in Review: Biometric and AI Litigation

One of the most critical consumer privacy statutes for biometric litigation has been Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act ("BIPA"), which regulates the collection, processing, disclosure, and security of the biometric information of Illinois residents. BIPA protects the "biometric information" of Illinois residents, which is any information based on "biometric identifiers" that identifies a specific person--regardless of how it is captured, converted, stored, or shared. Biometric identifiers are "a retina or iris scan, fingerprint, voiceprint, or scan of hand or face geometry." BIPA has found itself to be one of the most frequent targets for class actions, as it includes a private right of action with liquidated statutory damages, unlike many other data privacy statutes.


CMU Hosts Bipartisan Event To Unveil New Autonomous Vehicle Legislation

Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian highlighted the collaboration among government, academia and industry that has propelled Pennsylvania's autonomous vehicle (AV) industry forward during an event Wednesday outlining new legislation regulating AVs in the commonwealth. The legislation, unveiled at CMU's Mill 19 facility at Hazelwood Green by state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee; and Yassmin Gramian, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, would update Pennsylvania's policies around autonomous vehicles to mirror requirements in other states. Jahanian said that the global market for the autonomous vehicle industry will reach about $7 trillion dollars by 2050, with the potential to create countless jobs for workers of all education and skill levels. "While the economic impact of AV promises to be extraordinary, it also holds remarkable potential to enhance quality of life for citizens across the nation and contribute to solving significant societal challenges," Jahanian said, adding that benefits could include improvements to traffic safety and infrastructure maintenance and reductions in carbon emissions. He also noted that the technology's implications could extend to logistics, sustainability, medical care and expanding opportunities for independent living.
