The Morning After: NVIDIA's new 'AI brain' for robots
NVIDIA's move into robotics took another major step. NVIDIA is also helping robot creators with a new Isaac Nova Orin platform that includes two Jetson AGX Orin modules and the sensors needed for a robot to detect the world around it. The platform can handle up to six cameras, three LiDAR units and eight ultrasonic sensors. You might have to wait for NVIDIA's robot innovations, though. Most of this will come before the end of 2022, with a $399 for a basic Orin NX kit set to debut in Q4.

DHI InnoTech (commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan) Announces Partnership with Omdena to Drive AI Solutions in Bhutan
The Department of Innovation & Technology (InnoTech) under Druk Holding & Investments (DHI), the commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan, has partnered with Omdena, a global collaborative platform that makes AI for good accessible to all. This partnership is a step further in DHI InnoTech's mission to strategize technology and innovation pathways to enhance access and diffusion of emerging technologies, and build local capacity in the fields of science and technology. Omdena will assist InnoTech in hosting a global 2-week hackathon wherein InnoTech will identify key themes and issues that can be resolved using innovative AI/ML applications. Omdena will work with 50 AI engineers over an additional 8-week challenge to develop the idea or POC selected from the hackathon into a fully deployable algorithm. The pilot InnoTech-Omdena event will serve as a showcase for local institutions and the general public who are interested in AI/ML.
MENC stresses role of AI, tech in maritime security
Participants at the Middle East Naval Commanders Conference (MENC) held on the sidelines of the Doha International Maritime and Defence Exhibition and Conference 2022 (DIMDEX) have noted the importance of bilateral and multilateral partnerships among countries to ensure the oceans are protected from threats. While discussing'Resilience in the maritime Domain โ Confronting Asymmetric Threats,' senior military officers and academia highlighted the rapid growth of technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) in modern military operations and the gradual shift towards unmanned technological revolution. Vice-Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander, US Naval Forces Central Command/5thFleet, said multilateral partnerships, especially in a vast and strategic region like the Middle East and the Gulf, would ensure the security of commerce and people. He also noted that Qatar, as a Major non-NATO ally (MNNA), would play a crucial role in deploying technologies alongside the US and other partners to ensure the region's security. "Oceans have long served as parts to new frontiers and opportunities, and they remain so today. This region has three strategic points, the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Hormuz. Challenges to commercial vessels' security and stability and other threats can significantly impact global commerce. This is why resilience in the maritime domain matters greatly," Vice-Admiral Cooper said.
People trust AI fake faces more than real ones, according to a new study
Fake faces created by artificial intelligence (AI) are considered more trustworthy than images of real people, a new study has found. The results highlight the need for safeguards to prevent deep fakes, which have already been used for revenge porn, fraud and propaganda, the researchers behind the report say. The study - by Dr Sophie Nightingale from Lancaster University in the UK and Professor Hany Farid from the University of California, Berkeley, in the US - asked participants to identify a selection of 800 faces as real or fake, and to rate their trustworthiness. After three separate experiments, the researchers found the AI-created synthetic faces were on average rated 7.7% more trustworthy than the average rating for real faces. This is "statistically significant", they add.
Artificial Intelligence Upscales NASA Apollo 17 Moon Footage to 4K
NASA's Apollo 17 was the final mission of the Apollo program, launching on December 7, 1972 with Commander Eugene Cernan, Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt and Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans. Both Cernan and Schmitt walked on the moon, with the latter being the only professional geologist to land on the lunar surface. This mission focused on science, which meant the inclusion of a number of new experiments, including a biological experiment containing five mice carried in the command module. Living through the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the value of technology and AI. It has also revealed a dangerous side and regulators have responded accordingly. In 2021, across the world, governing bodies have been working to regulate how AI and ML systems are used. From the UK to the EU to China, regulations on how industries should monitor their algorithms, best practices for auditing and frameworks for more transparent AI systems are on the rise.
Banks Using AI Are Ripe for Russian Sabotage: Report
Banks and other financial institutions utilizing artificial intelligence may be uniquely susceptible to retaliatory Russian cyberattacks as taxing international sanctions worsen, experts warn. Those fears, highlighted in a recent Wall Street Journal report, comes as Russia's war on Ukraine trundles forward into its second month and as an unprecedented barrage of international sanctions continue to chip away at the Russian economy. Global financial institutions have played an integral role in the sanctions regime from the start, blocking money flows from certain Russian banks, denying them access to international markets, and even freezing the assets of President Vladimir Putin and prominent Russian oligarchs. However, experts fear these same institutions' rapid reliance on machine learning-learning models to automate more and more of their systems in the name of efficiency could come back to bite them in the ass. Andrew Burt, a former policy adviser to the head of the cyber division at the FBI, described AI vulnerabilities as "significant and very widely overlooked" at many financial institutions that have come to rely on them.

The attack: But this kind of neural network means if you change the input, such as the image it's fed, you can change how much computation it needs to solve it. This opens up a vulnerability that hackers could exploit, as the researchers from the Maryland Cybersecurity Center outlined in a new paper being presented at the International Conference on Learning Representations this week. By adding small amounts of noise to a network's inputs, they made it perceive the inputs as more difficult and jack up its computation. When they assumed the attacker had full information about the neural network, they were able to max out its energy draw. When they assumed the attacker had limited to no information, they were still able to slow down the network's processing and increase energy usage by 20% to 80%.
Artificial intelligence: the EU needs to act as a global standard-setter
The adopted text says that the public debate on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) should focus on this technology's enormous potential to complement humans. The text warns that the EU has fallen behind in the global race for tech leadership. As a result, there is a risk that standards will be developed elsewhere in the future, often by non-democratic actors, while the EU needs to act as a global standard-setter in AI. MEPs identified policy options that could unlock AI's potential in health, the environment and climate change, to help combat pandemics and global hunger, as well as enhancing people's quality of life through personalised medicine. AI, if combined with the necessary support infrastructure, education and training, can increase capital and labour productivity, innovation, sustainable growth and job creation, they add.
