Artificial intelligence (AI) is a key technologies of the future – and not just because of civilian applications like ecommerce, self-driving cars, and online search and personal assistants. AI will transform militaries through innovations in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics, command and control capabilities, weapons systems, and so on. Last year a landmark U.S. National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) report found, "The ability of a machine to perceive, evaluate, and act more quickly and accurately than a human represents a competitive advantage in any field--civilian or military."

While it's well known that artificial intelligence and automation make compliance easier and reduce manual processes, what's less well understood is how to harness the technology to gain a richer experience that sparks innovation in business processes. When tax departments actually engage with AI, the insights garnered can affect everything from how a company allocates human resources to the very direction a business decides to take in the wake of new tax regulations. Tax departments just entering the automation space often see the technology as a one-way street -- you set up the solution and it pumps out results. But there is a human side. To truly embrace the full potential of an AI-enabled tax platform, companies need to develop a give-and-take relationship. That means educating the system about the business so the machine can give back insights about how to make the tax function stronger and more efficient.

The Biden administration is rolling out its first whole-of-government plan to counter threats posed by drones to the United States, as malicious actors are increasingly using unmanned aircraft systems to commit crimes and conduct illegal surveillance, industrial espionage and more, a senior administration official said Monday. The official said that over the last decade, drones, known as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), have become a "regular feature of American life," noting they are used for recreation, research and for commerce. Many governments around the world have rightly put ethical development and deployment at the heart of their AI thinking. Core to this complex issue is a set of interconnected problems - AI systems that may automate societal problems, either due to a systemic lack of diversity in development teams, perhaps, or the use of training data that contains historic or structural biases. The design of systems may also be a factor. The result may be the algorithmic exclusion of individuals or groups because of their ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, or socioeconomic background. For example, facial recognition systems that misidentify black or Asian people because of a lack of relevant data; or CV-scanning applications that reject applicants from some postcodes/zip codes because, historically, human employers have actively excluded those jobseekers.

There is a growing talent pool in India, and technology adoption is rising in non-tech sectors like agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, and governance. To top it off, the Union and several state governments are turning to industries to enhance digitization. Against the backdrop of an ambitious Digital India campaign and spurred by the success of citizen-centric initiatives such as Aadhaar, UPI, and the National Digital Health Mission, the Union government is hoping to bolster a culture of building solutions to native challenges by leveraging emerging technologies. The industry is not blind to the problem, and this weakness is forcing cybersecurity companies to take a much broader approach to bolstering defenses. One way to help prevent data poisoning is for scientists who develop AI models to regularly check that all the labels in their training data are accurate. OpenAI LLP, the research company co-founded by Elon Musk, said that when its researchers curated their data sets for a new image-generating tool, they would regularly pass the data through special filters to ensure the accuracy of each label. "[That] removes the large majority of images which are falsely labeled," a spokeswoman said.
