State Department pursues 'people-people' diplomacy through video games

A total of 450 students from across the United States, Israel, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain participated in the 10-week program, Game Exchange, completing a total of 170 new video games based on the United Nations' sustainable development goals. Participants engaged in up to three shared video conference calls with their international peers at a sister school in addition to either seven or eight sessions, totaling between 20-25 hours, among themselves. Teachers were given paid training to help students navigate the game development process.

Measurement modeling could further the government's understanding of AI policymaking tools. Governments are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) systems to support policymaking, deliver public services, and manage internal people and processes. AI systems in public-facing services range from predictive machine-learning systems used in fraud and benefit determinations to chatbots used to communicate with the public about their rights and obligations across a range of settings. The integration of AI into agency decision-making processes that affect the public's rights poses unique challenges for agencies. System design decisions about training data, model design, thresholds, and interface design can set policy--thereby affecting the public's rights.


Will These Algorithms Save You From Quantum Threats?

In 1994, a Bell Labs mathematician named Peter Shor cooked up an algorithm with frightening potential. By vastly reducing the computing resources required to factor large numbers--to break them down into their multiples, like reducing 15 to 5 and 3--Shor's algorithm threatened to upend many of our most popular methods of encryption. Fortunately for the thousands of email providers, websites, and other secure services using factor-based encryption methods such as RSA or elliptic curve cryptography, the computer needed to run Shor's algorithm didn't exist yet. Shor wrote it to run on quantum computers which, back in the mid-1990s, were largely theoretical devices that scientists hoped might one day outperform classical computers on a subset of complex problems. In the decades since, huge strides have been made toward building practical quantum computers, and government and private researchers have been racing to develop new quantum-proof algorithms that will be resistant to the power of these new machines.


How To Fight Climate Change Using AI

Inflation is a global problem, and it's one that is being exacerbated by climate change. This is because the increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events drive up prices for food, energy, and other necessities. But there is hope: AI can help us fight climate change by reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and increasing the use of renewable energy sources. Therefore, the Green transition is a key pillar in fighting inflation, and AI is an important tool in this effort. In fact, according to a 2022 BCG Climate AI Survey report (shown below), 87% of private and public sector CEOs with decision-making power in AI and climate believe AI is an essential tool in the fight against climate change.


Amazon's 'Safe' New Robot Won't Fix its Worker Injury Problem

Since Amazon began bringing robots to its warehouses in 2014, company executives have repeatedly claimed that they improve worker safety. But company records obtained by Reveal showed that between 2016 and 2019 serious injuries occurred more often in Amazon warehouses with robots than those without them, suggesting that robots made employees less safe by causing managers to raise performance quotas. Analysis of filings with the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) by The Washington Post found that in 2020, serious injuries were roughly twice as likely to occur in Amazon warehouses than those run by other companies. A separate analysis of OSHA data by labor union coalition the Strategic Organizing Center found the same pattern for 2021. Amazon didn't mention that track record late last month when it announced a machine called Proteus, which company officials call their first fully mobile and collaborative robot.


NASA condemns Russian cosmonauts for displaying anti-Ukraine propaganda on ISS

NASA has issued a fierce condemnation of the Russian space agency after three cosmonauts displayed anti-Ukraine propaganda aboard the International Space Station. The trio were seen holding flags of the Luhansk People's Republic and the Donetsk People's Republic -- two Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine that are only recognised as independent states by Moscow and Syria. They also said the capture of the region was'a liberation day to celebrate both on Earth and in space.' In response to the pictures, posted by Russia's state space corporation Roscosmos, NASA said it'strongly rebukes Russia using the International Space Station for political purposes to support its war against Ukraine.' Press secretary Jackie McGuinness added that it was'fundamentally inconsistent with the station's primary function among the 15 international participating countries to advance science and develop technology for peaceful purposes.' Rebuked: NASA has condemned the Russian space agency after three cosmonauts displayed anti-Ukraine propaganda on the International Space Station.


NASA SOHO Comet Search with Artificial Intelligence

The SOHO/LASCO data set provided here comes from the instrument's C2 telescope and comprises approximately 36,000 images spread across 2,950 comet observations. The human eye is a very sensitive tool and it is the only tool currently used to reliably detect new comets in SOHO data - particularly comets that are very faint and embedded in the instrument background noise. Bright comets can be easily detected in the LASCO data by relatively simple automated algorithms, but the majority of comets observed by the instrument are extremely faint, noise-level observations. Comets in SOHO/LASCO data are dynamic and morphologically diverse objects, and thus computationally highly complex to detect and track. This work is supported by the NASA Open Source Science Initiative and is part of efforts to showcase the cross-disciplinary use of NASA's science data and encourage public engagement with science data-related problems.

CYBERCOM surveying DoD machine learning requirements to prioritize future investments

U.S. Cyber Command wants to expand the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and to do so, it's kicked off a broader survey of machine learning requirements across the Defense Department. It's working with the Defense Innovation Unit, the new Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office and the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency to do that. The idea is to determine priorities for greater investment in the near future. U.S. Cyber Command wants to expand the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and to do so, it's kicked off a broader survey of machine learning requirements across the Defense Department. The New Eyes and Brain of the Galileo Project

Over the past few weeks, team members of the Galileo Project engaged in a truly heroic effort to assemble the first telescope system at Harvard University. The Galileo Project is a scientific search program for extraterrestrial equipment near Earth. The Project was publicly announced one month after the ODNI report to the US Congress about Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) in June 2021. The Project's name was inspired by Galileo Galilei's legacy of finding answers to fundamental questions, in this case the nature of UAP, by looking through new telescopes. The search is agnostic to the outcome.
