EvilModel: Malware that Hides Undetected Inside Deep Learning Models
A team of researchers from the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Illinois has found that it is also possible to hide malware in deep learning neural networks and deliver it to an unsuspecting target, without it being detected by conventional anti-malware software. Not surprisingly, this new work is highlighting the need for better cybersecurity measures to counteract and protect users from the very real possibility of AI-assisted attacks, especially as individuals and businesses become increasingly reliant on AI in their daily activities. In a pre-print paper outlining EvilModel -- the team's ominously named method for embedding malware in deep learning neural networks -- the team discovered that it was possible to infect a deep learning model with malware, and have it fool anti-malware detectors, all without significantly affecting the model's performance. To achieve this, the team used an approach known as steganography, where pieces of data in a system are swapped out for other bits of data that might have a hidden message or function. To hide their sample piece of malware, the team first started by deconstructing the malware into smaller pieces so that each piece measured only 3 bytes -- an insignificant enough size to evade detection.

The leadership change comes at a challenging time, as Tesla faces renewed scrutiny from US regulators over crashes involving drivers who used Autopilot and works to expand the latest version of Full Self Driving (FSD) to a larger number of customers.
2022 National Security Symposium
On Thursday June 23, the National Security Institute (NSI), in partnership with the Federalist Society, hosted the 2022 National Security Symposium entitled, "Next Generation National Security." The first panel of the Symposium considered the various threats and potential benefits that digital currencies may pose, as well as discussed whether and how the U.S. might develop policies on digital assets that both protect and encourage freedom and payment security while maintaining our safety from bad actors, and thwarting the schemes and initiatives of bad actors. The panel on Cryptocurrency and National Security featured Gus Coldebella, Partner, True Ventures; William Hughes, Senior Counsel and Director of Global Regulatory Matters, Consensys Software; Dr. Oonagh McDonald, Senior Adviser, Crito Capital, and; Hon. Eric Kadel, Partner, Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, served as the moderator. The second panel titled, " Artificial Intelligence: Implications for National Security," addressed the national security ramifications of the scaling artificial intelligence (AI) developments.
Ukraine devastates Russian artillery depots ahead of offensive
Ukraine destroyed a series of Russian ordnance depots in the 20th week of the war, demonstrating the efficiency of US-supplied HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) rocket systems and other Western systems, and worrying Russian military observers. These Ukrainian attacks appear to be part of preparations for a summer counteroffensive in the southern Kherson and Zaporizhia districts, which border Crimea. Ukraine said it destroyed a key Russian command post in Kherson district along with a weapons arsenal, killing 12 Russian soldiers on July 10. Its armed forces posted drone footage of a depot in flames. Two days later, Ukraine said it had struck another Russian ammunition depot in Nova Kakhovka, also in Kherson oblast, this time killing 52 soldiers.

Booz Allen unveils $100M venture capital fund to back tech startups
Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the 10 largest U.S. defense contractors, launched a $100 million venture capital fund to invest in fledgling companies creating promising new technology. The fund announced Wednesday, dubbed Booz Allen Ventures, will concentrate on bankrolling early-stage firms working on cutting-edge technology, and help them find ways to get those innovations into the field for use. Brian MacCarthy, vice president of tech scouting and ventures at Booz Allen, said in a Monday interview that the fund plans to invest in four to six firms per year, providing seed money ranging from hundreds of thousands to low millions of dollars. MacCarthy said there is a growing understanding in the defense world that more must be done to open funding streams for firms working on new capabilities such as artificial intelligence, which could in turn help Booz Allen's government clients. He pointed to the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence's 2021 final report, which recommended major new investments in AI research and development, as an example of the emerging consensus around this need.
