Error-in-variables modelling for operator learning

Deep operator learning has emerged as a promising tool for reduced-order modelling and PDE model discovery. Leveraging the expressive power of deep neural networks, especially in high dimensions, such methods learn the mapping between functional state variables. While proposed methods have assumed noise only in the dependent variables, experimental and numerical data for operator learning typically exhibit noise in the independent variables as well, since both variables represent signals that are subject to measurement error. In regression on scalar data, failure to account for noisy independent variables can lead to biased parameter estimates. With noisy independent variables, linear models fitted via ordinary least squares (OLS) will show attenuation bias, wherein the slope will be underestimated. In this work, we derive an analogue of attenuation bias for linear operator regression with white noise in both the independent and dependent variables. In the nonlinear setting, we computationally demonstrate underprediction of the action of the Burgers operator in the presence of noise in the independent variable. We propose error-in-variables (EiV) models for two operator regression methods, MOR-Physics and DeepONet, and demonstrate that these new models reduce bias in the presence of noisy independent variables for a variety of operator learning problems. Considering the Burgers operator in 1D and 2D, we demonstrate that EiV operator learning robustly recovers operators in high-noise regimes that defeat OLS operator learning. We also introduce an EiV model for time-evolving PDE discovery and show that OLS and EiV perform similarly in learning the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky evolution operator from corrupted data, suggesting that the effect of bias in OLS operator learning depends on the regularity of the target operator.

A brain-computer startup beat Elon Musk's Neuralink to implanting its first device in a US patient

Synchron, a brain-computer interface startup, reportedly implanted its first device in a US patient earlier this month -- overtaking Elon Musk's Neuralink for the third time. The startup implanted a 1.5-inch device into the brain of an ALS patient at Mount Sinai West medical center in New York on July 6, Bloomberg first reported. A spokesperson from Synchron did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The purpose of the device is to allow the patient to communicate -- even after they have lost the ability to move -- by using their thoughts to send emails and texts. Bloomberg reported that Synchron has already implanted the device in four patients in Australia who have been able to use the brain implant to send messages on WhatsApp and shop online.

The Air Force plans to test an AI copilot on its cargo planes

On July 13, Boston's Merlin Labs announced that it would be working with the US Air Force to add autonomy to the C-130J Super Hercules cargo transport plane. Merlin's technology is a kind of advanced auto-copilot, designed to take over the responsibilities of one crew member in flight while being supervised by a human pilot. If the technology delivers as promised, it will allow planes that normally fly with two human pilots to operate with just one, and could even allow single-seater planes to fly fully autonomously. The same day that Merlin announced its partnership with the Air Force, it also announced a second round of $105 million in funding, which combined with a first round means the company has $130 million of runway to develop its technologies. This funding, says Merlin Labs CEO Matthew George, will help the company continue to develop "the world's most capable, safest and flexible pilot, that will eventually enable very large aircraft to fly with reduced crew and small aircraft to fly totally uncrewed."


Airbus and CISPA establish Digital Innovation Hub for Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence

Airbus and the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at ILA Berlin 2022 to open a center of excellence for cybersecurity and trustworthy artificial intelligence in Saarland, Germany. The «CISPA-Airbus Digital Innovation Hub» will be located at the CISPA Innovation Campus in St. Ingbert and will start operations this year with the intention to grow to around 100 experts within the next three years. In the long term, Airbus and the CISPA are jointly aiming to grow the competence center to more than 500 experts. "Joining efforts with a renowned German research institution like CISPA is a key step in our strategy to continue strengthening our top-notch cybersecurity capabilities and expertise. At Airbus we are firmly committed to continue investing in the technologies and resources of the present and the future, which will enable us to be at the forefront of tomorrow's challenges, ever more digital. To achieve this ambition we are carefully selecting the right partners, and the creation of this competence center is a great example of our long-term vision and investment in innovation", said Evert Dudok, Executive Vice President Connected Intelligence at Airbus Defence and Space.


Artificial intelligence rules to require human liability

Artificial intelligence systems will have to identify a legal person to be held responsible for any problems under proposals for regulating AI unveiled by the government today. The proposed'pro innovation' regime will be operated by existing regulators rather than a dedicated central body along the lines of that being created by the EU, the government said. The proposals were published as the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, which sets out an independent data protection regime, is introduced to parliament. Regulators - such as Ofcom, the Competition and Markets Authority, the Information Commissioner's Office, the Financial Conduct Authority and the Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency - will be asked to interpret and implement the principles. They will be encouraged to consider lighter touch options which could include guidance and voluntary measures or creating sandboxes - such as a trial environment where businesses can check the safety and reliability of AI tech before introducing it to market.


UK lays out regulatory model for Artificial Intelligence

The UK is setting the stage for its future Artificial Intelligence (AI) regulatory model. Much like the EU, it suggests adopting a risk-based approach but will differ from the bloc by entrusting enforcement to a panel of regulators. The British government presented its "pro-innovation approach to regulating AI" on Monday (18 July) alongside its new Data Protection and Digital Information Bill. It follows the presentation of the National AI Strategy last September, a ten-year plan to ensure the UK becomes a global AI superpower. The country has invested more than £2.3 billion (€2.7 billion) in AI since 2014.
